I got a couple brothers who were fifos and as a 12 years sailor with 7 years of seatime, the grind is real. Every day is the same for weeks at a time. Long ass shifts, little downtime for gym and rest. No days off until back to shore. Seeing what it's like for FIFO workers really makes me appreciate you boys more, knowing what it's like to do the grind. Much respect!
With so many aboard ship, how limited were your duties? If you're not driving, navigating or operating radar, it might be a lot of drill? Sorry if this is out of line, just curious.
@@Jimmy911ism There are many roles on a ship in which you're tasked to. Your rate may take up most of you daily duties, but depending on what you're doing, it will mean you're either working 5x5, 4x4 shifts of something similar. Working four hours on, four off. That sort of thing. Or you'll do daily duties then go up on the bridge for Quartermaster tricks til early hours of the next morning. Some rates are good hours where they're just dayhands while others have such static hours. For example: a Coxswain will work early morn thru the day doing their duties and after dinner will be up in the bridge for the evening until very late. Finish, might go back down to their office to play catch up on paperwork before putting their head down for a few hours then wake up to do it all over again. On the other hand, a stores sailor is just a day hand with ancillary duties at night in case something goes wrong, or a sea evolution/exercise requires them. (Other ancillary duties such as Standing Sea Duty Watch, Fire party, ships medical emergency team, flight deck team, Boarding Party and others. They will often run these exercises and drills after hours so you're often up late practicing flood drills, fire and toxic gas drills or assisting in helicopter (helo) takeoffs and landings)
I dunno man looks pretty cruisy compared to the job I do, and they probably get paid triple as much and have no rent or utility bills, sounds like a dream job.
@@juneallan4903 if he does 12 hour shifts and finishes at 5am, he’d only be getting 4-5 hours sleep after eating and showering?? Stuff that, that’s insane
Doing those sort of hours will definitely age you with the quickness. I get that some people just don't need 8 hour sleep but yeah yeah nah yeah nah fuck that mate.
@JS yea my comment was all sarcasm, I know people that fifo and such and let me tell you as a scaffy when they come back to commercial they cry because ‘I haven’t had to work this hard in ages’ lol
Depends on the mine, or qualifications you have.. if you are in to start fresh it can be rough but if your ticketed up the wahoo then you can sneak a cushy job 😅
I worked on a camp site for Sodexo for the mines in Qld all miners were nice when they seen me doing the shitty job like dishwashing great work man Always wanted to get on the trucks but I was to quite to talk to people who knew people to help me out had no experience always a dream job
Bro, you want to drive a wide range of machinery without all the bs and hassle with tickets and all this having to know people? go work on a cotton farm.
Ha! "...after pretending like I know what I'm doing at the gym"! I wish I'd known that we were all pretty much faking it when I tried the gym years ago. Interesting video, thanks for it. :)
Hey Tommy, great video showing the life of fifo workers.I used to work fifo outa Perth ,also later did shut downs ,N/S and days ,depending...I loved it... Not sure why this popped up in my stream tho. Keep safe 💯💛💚
Mad videos bro iv been in the mines for about 5 years i was telling my homie to make some videos aswel similar to yours, stumbled across your content yesterday 🤙
There was a general giving a speech at a graduation explained why making your bed is one of the first thing they teach in the army, because no matter how bad a day you have had you get to fall into a clean , made bed.
The issue is that only works for people who care about that. Personally I prefer coming home and seeing my blanket still crumbled a little from when my dog wakes up in the morning, feels more lived in and like an actual bed. In saying that the only time I spend in my room is when I sleep, the second I'm awake I don't go back to my room until I need to sleep
Yes mate did it for 30 years in the mining industry keep up the good work and enjoy all the money that you make you have a great attitude towards making your bed I do the same brother good stuff 👍
Big fan of making my bed too. A few years ago, I heard a military bloke talk about small ways to start your day off right and have done it ever since. Good to come home to.
Everything goes on the bed. Pants, shirt, belt, keys, safetys, pen, lock, wallet and bag on the floor. All ready and double checked before getting dressed
Ahahaha I was working there just a few weeks ago stayed at the same place in the cabins too! Was doing some earth works. That place reminded me of the power plant on the Simpsons
Yeah mate that's Tarong power station. Still provides base load to SE Queensland. I've stayed in Kingaroy a bit in my time too.... that looks like the pepper tree cabins.
Yep been there, done that... Always keep in the back of your mind that no one in the history of world, whilst lying on their death bead has ever said "I wish I had worked more often". But how many people have said "I wish I spent more time with the people I love". Be careful of your "sacrifice" for the family because you're giving up more than you think.
Sorry, not trying to be negative or know your situation but I've spoken to so many of the older guys who kids have grown up and they don't have that close connection with their kids for example. Let alone lost relationships in general.
I always make my bed when away on fifo, just part of the routine, same with work clothes. Even the same water bottle, there great, Bunnings $14 or so dollars.
