Dahlias are one of the most beautiful flowers. My mom used to always have them in our flower beds. Thank you for the video; it was very helpful. One thing that I noticed was the gnats flying around. I watched another video on how to get rid of them that may help with the growth of the dahlias and all plants. I will try to find that video and share. Keep in mind this is meant for inside plants. Plants outside will most definitely get gnats anyway. Apparently, most all soil has gnat eggs and that's where the gnats happily reside. To get rid of them the soil needs to be sterilized. Take the soil for the pot that you will plant in and put it in the microwave for 1 minute at a time for 3 minutes. Be careful to watch so it doesn't catch on fire. Now you can use the soil in the planter. Maybe even sterilize the pot with peroxide and water. You can also just use 1/4 c of peroxide and 3 1/4 c of water and put it in the soil around the plant. It doesn't kill the plant surprisingly. I was just careful not to put it directly on the plant. I had to do this a couple of times but they disappeared!! YAY!! Happy dahlia!!
I just planted Dahlias for the first time, not sure why I took so long since I love those, this video was great, especially the propagation part, aaaand I was really shocked at how huge your older fertilized plant looks, Fabulous.....looking forward to a blooming update later.
I haven't yet tried dahlia's and this was really interesting to learn how to propagate. I hope to try them for the first time next year. From what I can see, they are very rewarding to grow and of course gorgeous.
Try again ! I have success propagating that top part you cut off.... if you remove the outer leaves at the node, have you tried #1 rooting hormone? I find it’s not really that necessary but it might make a difference for you...I also use extremely light & airy (barely damp) rooting medium, full of perlite and Peat- and then cover with an upside down plastic container to create a little greenhouse. It just hurt my heart to see you get rid of such a good tip! Haha. Great tips on making cuttings from tubers... do you also keep them warm and humid while they are trying to root? Thanks for well explained vid. 🇨🇦
I have watched a number of videos about growing & pinching back Dahlia's & this is the best. What I would like to see, and maybe there is one, is your video on staking tall tahlia. thanks
Yulia you are a wealth of knowledge and experience. A fantastic resource. Right now I am at the stage of my dahlia growth skyrocketing. They are still potted up inside. Do I pinch them back now or wait till I plant them in about 3 weeks? Thanks
I agree. Cutting the eye from the tuber is wrong as it means no more growth from that part of the tuber. Same with fertilising advice - you need to vary the PKN ratios throughout the seasons high root builder in spring to high bloom builder in summer.
@@johnoneill8211 John is correct, but if you have a tuber with four or five stems already sprouting from it, it can definitely be worth this kind of cutting where you are only losing one eye. I find this Kind of cutting (as opposed to a sprouted stem higher up ) forms new tubers quickly by the end of the season and sometimes even flowers same year here in Ont. where we have short summer seasons. Nitrogen feed in early Part of the summer for green end healthy stems and root growth potassium P and phosphorus K in the second half of the summer to encourage fruiting/flowering, and cut back on the nitrogen or you won’t get blooms!
I learned a lot from your video! I live in the bay area, california, I am a first time dahlia grower, is it too late to fertilize my dahlias? Should I fertilize in the morning or end of the day? Thank you so much!
Love the video. After you've propagated them, where do you store them? Indoor or outdoor? What kind of temperature, and how much sun do they need? Thanks.
I usually store on a bright windowsill or in a little temporary greenhouse outside. As long as the temperatures don't go down to freezing they are good.
Love your channel, your my favourite gardener. I didn’t pinch my dahlias early now they are long and leggy. Is it too late to pinch them and can I go down to 6 inches. Thank you Allison. from Port Severn, Ontario Canada
When fertilizing do you place the fertilizer around the dahlia and then water in? Or do you place the fertilizer around the dahlia then scratch the fertilizer into the ground and water the plant? Also how far out do you place the fertilizer from the main stem of the dahlia? I am think more when your working in the garden and not in a pot. Thanks.
I had decent outcomes propagating the clipping by dipping them in honey, then cinnamon before placing them in the dirt. I had 80-90% success. I would be curious if you try it, if you get the same
Thank you for this video....I'm curious if you might be able to provide guidance on why Dahlia leaves might be drooping. I live in the Bay Area and just received the plant from a friend living 50 miles north of me. I'm wondering if my zone (10a) is the reason. I tried spraying Capt Jack's deadbug last night (just in case that was the issue). Also, I used a little bit of MaxSea today to see if it might perk up. Any suggestions?
Yuliya, thank you for this video it was great info. Today is 5-12-20 my dahlias are tall and falling with one big bloom and smaller blooms to the sides. Is it to late to cut them back for more blooms? I don't like that their tall and falling, I staked them but I rather have more blooms, HELP!
Please help!! It was raining too much and we had a big cold spell, so I brought them into the garage. They ended up growing for too long without sun and now they are too long and skinny, weak and flopping over. What do I do now? Do I pinch really low or just leave it and see what happens?
It's May 29 and I have Dahlia bulbs still in a bag that I purchased. Is it too late to plant them up in a pot? Also the one I did plant is in a pot. I need to pinch per this video -- can I keep it in a pot or are they best in the ground? I'm in zone 5b. Thanks for the video.
The bagged tubors you can plant straight in the ground at this point. You can grow dahlias in pots as long as they are big enough. Also i would fertilize more in the pot as supposed to in ground. Good luck!
Great video!!! I might try this with a couple of tubers I have just one of. Can the plants you make planted into the ground at the same time as the ones with the developed tubers or is it better to keep them in a pot for the first season?
Hi: this isn’t about dahlias. I live in zone 7b. I’m new to gardening. I have lillies growing in a pot. What do I do with them for the winter? Do I dig the bulbs out for storage? Or can I leave them in the pot overwinter for next season?
Can you plant your Lillies in the ground? Although they may overwinter (especially if you have a very insulated pot) in your zone they will be safer in the ground. Good luck!
Y Garden - I don’t really have room in my small garden area that’s why I put them in pots. How about putting the bulbs in the ground for winter and in the spring I dig it up and then put them in pots. Would that be a better method?
@@ngwww yes! Everything over winters better in the ground ...sounds like your zone doesn’t get frost but if you do you can kiss that pot goodbye... in the earth you can mulch over it with leaves, pot it back up when you see the beginnings of sprouts in the spring.
Absolutely not late. You can plant them straight in the ground or grow them in a very large pot. Make sure you identify them somehow because until they start growing you can easily break new shoots accidentally. Good luck! :)
