Thanks for checking out our Eminem reaction. We didn't know what to think when we listened to White America. At the very least, it's an interesting look into Eminem's mind. Is this song a joke as Em eluded to at the end, or was he being serious?

I think it has a lot to do with culture too. White and black culture don’t really over lap. Unless it’s a white growing up in black neighborhoods, or black growing up in a white neighborhood. And of course parents play a big role.
@jonathongeorge3093
@jonathongeorge3093 3 года назад
Harlem has always been pretty much synonymous with "black", so I think part of what he was getting at was that white suburban parents were fine with the negative stereotypes within hip-hop (& gangsta rap back then) being attributed to black people, but Em being white opened the door to a much larger mainstream audience & the culture was now starting to hit a little too close to home. As a teen in the '90s (class of 94), all we listened to was rap/hip-hop, but our parents pretty much had no idea... Eminem's mainstream visibility & popularity couldn't be hidden.

The "F-word" was largely disassociated from gay people where I grew up. It was basically a synonym for someone being lame or being a jerk. Same as how 'Gay' used to be synonymous with 'Lame'. "If I was black, I would have sold half" was him admitting, for his talent, he wouldn't have been as successful if he was black. Blacks were the major consumers of rap music in his day. The fact he was white (relatable to white people) meant he blew up in sales because any white that liked rap would favor him over black artists, because he is more relatable to them. - Never mind, I typed that while the video was paused, but Brad was spot on. Side note: My friend's toddler learned the b word from Eminem because I was listening to it while babysitting. His parents were shocked and didn't understand how he picked up a word like that, but he latched onto it and loved the word. What we take in really does affect how we are as people, just not in quite the same ways or extremes as society wants us to believe. Also, the "I'm just playing, America" part at the end always felt like how people say, "No offense, but.." It was meant to slap, but he had to add that at the end to get on the radio.

My problem with this line of thinking is he wasn't the first major white rapper and he wasn't the last. None have been anywhere near as big. The evidence suggest Eminem was just more talented than the others, if it was just being white why didn't Vanilla Ice become the major sensation? I suppose you could speculate, as Eminem does, that the Dr Dre seal of approval made a difference, but then isn't this a black man's approval and not his skin color? I just don't see how the racial theory of increased sales survives basic logic. I think the reality is the combination of talent and Dre made Eminem as big as he is. There are surely other rappers who were extremely talented that never got the recognition Em did, but this is the same phenomenon we see in hollywood where talented actors/actresses are constantly ground up and washed out by a machine where who you know is often more important than how talented you are. We definitely cannot say race didn't play a role, it probably did, but I think the idea that we could conclude it was THE major factor is patently absurd.

Sheltering kids from what is inevitable makes them unprepared for the reality of the world. Parents are the ones that need to teach their children about respect, discipline, consideration and compassion towards others. If they have the proper foundation to follow, they will know difference between right and wrong. The parents should want to be the #1 Role Models for their children, not be replaced by Eminem or any artist. EM is the epitome of freedom of speech on display...🔺🔺🔺

I think when he's talking about Harlem vs Boston that he means that's when the government had a problem. It wasn't an issue when rap was popular on black radio, but when it hit white radio, that's when everyone clamored for stickers and censorship.

I think he´s basically saying the big shots don´t care about the black community. Like they gave no shit about all the problems in the black community, but as soon as it affected the white community, people in power started caring, because NOW it affected them and their kids.

@@chrissmith6774 It’s not just rap that has been targeted. It was any song with “controversial” lyrics. Frank Zappa, John Denver and Dee Snider testified at the hearings. The Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) grew out of the National PTA’s campaign. As a way to get other concerned parents on board, the organization mailed letters to influential people nationwide. That’s how Susan Baker, married to Secretary of the Treasury James A. Baker III, ended up hearing songs that would later be known as the “Filthy Fifteen.” Songs like Mercyful Fate’s “Into the Coven” (rated “O” for reference to the occult); Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” (“V” for violence); Black Sabbath’s “Trashed” (“D/A” for drug/alcohol reference); and Prince’s “Darling Nikki,” which earned Prince one “X”-rated spot on the list (his song “Sugar Walls,” performed by Sheena Easton, also got an X)

Then they had fits over Eminem but we already labels on records so........I say that to say this, I have never believed in censorship, of music or literature. I have never censored what my children listen to or read. If you are raising your children in the right way, what they listen to will not influence them in how they live. He was saying it wasn't a problem in Harlem but in Boston it bothered some fathers who's daughter's were starting to blossom. He's making a point that the government wouldn't care if a black community especially a redlined one like Harlem the was created by democrats and a democratic president but if a rich white continue like a suburb in Boston or Connecticut than the government would be more likely listen to their complaints. Eminem was the first person i can think of that people who were offended by his lyrics tried to "cancel" someone and it backfired very badly and launched Eminem to the point where everybody that wasn't listening to him then definitely wanted to after the government tried to shut him down. Especially people in a certain age range that have the attitude where if you tell them not to do something, they're gonna do it out of spite. I loved the phase of my life. If they are one of those kids that thinks movies are real life and reality tv isn't fake they probably shouldn't listen to anything because all music can be influencing. If kids dont understand metaphors or sarcasm they shouldn't listen to eminem or rap or rock and probably not comedy either.

This song was about how the Government didn't really get involved in censoring rap music until Eminem got a bunch of white people listening to it. It's him saying that Congress didn't care what black kids were exposed to, but flipped out when white kids started hearing the same things.

You were on it, then stopped just short: he was saying breaking into rap was hard because he was white. Dre gave him instant cred and when he blew up it became opposite... White kids, who never listened until 1999, became instant rap fans and the ENTIRE culture shifted

I had a feeling that we would be past any BS race issue by now when I was in my 20’s in 2000. I got NO blowback for dating cross race in South Carolina in the late 90’s, early 2000’s. I figured by now, it wouldn’t be a topic of any discussion. Just history! And now, people are out here self-segregating on purpose. It’s weird!

Finally a reaction video where the people reacting actually reacts and not just listen to music. And an important thing is " Eric " is not a generic name. It's refering to the 1999 High school shotting at the time, it was the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history. Like politicions/media acused people like Eminem of being the source of changing these kids character. U should overthink Eminem, he does not say random words, he mean every word he spits. Also those names in the end "Tipper Gore" etc, are the CEO's of medias in the USA, thus -> " Fuck you with the freedom of speech this "... " will allow you to have " . and also the " replace it with a Parental Advisery Sticker" Cya

This is Top 5 Em song for me. I see the whole song as his contribution to the conversation about White Privilege: that he would’ve sold half the records if he was Black, that he goes on TRL (a segment of MTV) and gets lots of hugs because he’s White, etc. He was incredibly progressive for the time, especially as we’ve only started having the conversations about White Privilege within the past 5 or 6 years. This album came out 20 years ago. It’s incredible.

This one takes me back to me and my friends hiding under the bleachers in high school listening to hip hop on headphones. It was contraband and treated a lot like drugs. You’d get expelled in my high school if caught with this music. Especially, if you were caught with NWA, Tupac, Biggie, etc. It was also around the same time as congress and Tipper Gore’s effort to put “explicit lyrics” warning labels on music and trying to limit access on who could buy music with explicit lyrics. Hence the “f you Tipper Gore” in the lyrics of this tune.

him being white definetely helped him a lot like if we look hes sales , bc im 28 and im fom FINLAND , people didnt even knew hiphop in here before eminem came up , it was wild time , i remember everyone started copying him and everyone wanted to be rapper , we still have battle rappers in here who copying eminem . But you have to remember that it was a good thing if we look black rappers also when eminem came up because now every white kid listening black rappers too , so its kinda like WIN WIN situation . and isnt that what hiphop is ? bringing people together .

A few songs from this era of Eminem were about this weird phenomenon where suddenly hip hop was all over the news as a corrupting influence. Hip hop was the reason for school shootings, rising drug use, and teen pregnancy... Instead of it being too many guns floating around, a failed attempt at drug prohibition, and abstinence only education. Another line from another song: When a dude's getting bullied and shoots up his school And they blame it on Marilyn and the heroin Where were the parents at? And look where it's at! Middle America, now it's a tragedy Now it's so sad to see, an upper-class city Havin' this happenin'

When this song released the hiphop fan base was still predominantly black, as Shady blew up not only did it make hiphop more mainstream by stepping into suburbs, it brought white fans to HIPHOP/rap increasing HIPHOP brand…one thing Em/Shady doesn’t get nearly enough credit for is, when HIPHOP expanded to suburbs (bc of him), it also became global/WORLDWIDE BRAND w/ his face leading expansion

He’s not necessarily rhyming the word but the syllables and the sound of the the syllable. It’s wild sometimes how he breaks a word in half to rhyme the first half of a word or start a new rhyme with the last half of the word. I think that is why he’s so appealing to break down channels.

I think the contrast between Harlem and Boston in the song is relating to the different reaction of regulators and government officials. Bad lyrics in rap in black communities at the time we’re ignored by mainstream media until hip hop broke out into suburban white communities. At that time the media and parent organizations were trying to stop concerts, censor lyrics and pushed to have parental advisory stickers put on products.

About Lex's question at 7:54 -- you guys should really check out the interview Eminem did with Anderson Cooper. In one part Anderson asks him about how he "bends the word" to make things rhyme. Eminem responds by talking about words he thinks you can rhyme with orange.

I think the point he was trying to make about Boston vs Harlem is that, all these parents and politicians complaining about his lyrics had no issue when the music was predominantly heard by young black and brown ppl from lower socio-economic backgrounds they had no issue with it. But once its started to become mainstream and their kids were listening, relating and being influenced by hip hop/non mainstream views it became unacceptable... but it was totally fine when it was only affecting "other" ppls kids
