Underwood touching .357 Mag level with their .38 +p. 1213 fps with 125gr from a 3 inch barrel is something you get with low end .357 mag.

I own a few dozen handguns in just about every caliber , and bought a lot of Underwood ammunition a few years ago when ammo was scarce . Since my friend owns a chronograph , I can say that their (Underwood) revolver ammo almost never achieves the rated velocities printed on the box . So , I'm quite impressed with the 125gr. 38special +P load you tested , it was right there in both velocity & performance . Great video and commentary !

Well done! You made a number of very pertinent points. First of significance re. the 38 spcl, is that one has to be competent in DA shooting. Given that, I was a bit surprised at the obvious recoil in the non-airweight revolver. I believe you are correct that people who choose the 380 wish to reduce recoil to benefit repeat shot, to reduce handgun size, or - preferably - both. There are midsized double stack 380's about the weight of your revolver that provide reduced recoil and also double the capacity. That is a consideration.

I agree to a point, anything within 25 yards should be shot double action for defensive training but anything beyond 25 yards should be single action if you have a choice. Single action you increase accuracy and there is a lawyer tied to every bullet you shoot. That's my opinion and how law enforcement was trained when they used revolvers.

While the Underwood ammo here is nice & toasty, modern +P from most manufacturers is what was considered regular ol' walkin' down the street ammo back in the day, and regular loadings are considerably less. Combine that with the lesser development that most makers give to revo rounds, as mentioned here, and ending up with .38 Spl coming in closer to .380 than 9x19 is not unexpected.

I didn't know until your videos that 38 Special +P has a variety of loads ranging from way under 9 mm to more than 9 mm being close to .357 Magnum (as seen in this video). I've been shooting for about 5 years now & would like to buy a 357 Magnum revolver. Problem being I'm such a cheapskate that I don't want to pay the added cost of a good revolver and especially the much higher costs of ammo. I don't even shoot my 380 LCP2 because of the ammo cost. Since I like to shoot a lot, that only leaves the much cheaper 9 mm & 22LR to shoot. So I will resolve this problem by watching more of your excellent videos!

Even standard pressure 38spl with a 158gr can be pretty snappy from a little gun. It's not heavy on energy compared to things like 9mm and others, but that heavy bullet seems to be pretty effective. I wouldn't hesitate to carry 38spl wadcutter loads though, so take that for what it's worth. The 380acp is a fine round unless you're trying to shoot through a windshield or something.

I tried some Underwood standard and +P loads with my LCP (shorter barrel than your EZ). Fairly brutal and both either went through 21 inches of gelatin completely or close. No expansion. With the .380, that longer barrel you have is going to be key, but it probably isn't what most are using.

@wastool
@wastool Год назад
@Gieszkanne You're forgetting size. An LCP is a lot smaller and lighter than a 9mm equivalent. Seems to me the people looking for a +p .380 are trying to squeeze 9mm power out of that size of firearm.

@Gieszkanne Год назад
@@wastool The LCP is small but you could find equal small 9mm Like the Kahr PM9. The most who go for .380 are wanting less recoil.
@GunSam
@GunSam Год назад
@@Gieszkanne I think it's a niche thing, same as the .38 Special load here where one might say, just get a .357 Magnum. There's a possibility that someone owns just one gun like a .380 Shield EZ or Glock 42 because the .380 is the right caliber for them, but maybe they need to have a little extra for that pistol for whatever reason. In ballistics terms, a .380 ACP is generally always a lighter, lower sectional density bullet with a flatter nose so I would think in a lot of regards, a hot .380 ACP could perform better than a low end 9mm at specific tasks.

Good video Sam. I'm sure you're already aware, but Underwood also loads the Hornady XTP to a "+P" energy at 1200fps. I carry that in my Bersa Thunder. I'm guessing you'd probably give up slight penetration & get much better XTP expansion. (Before some dude with a pocket protector & scotch taped glasses comments saying there is no such thing as SAAMI rated +P in 380 loads, I KNOW, but that's what Underwood calls it, and since they have two identical loads with one being higher pressure, I think calling it "+P" is fair & makes sense.

Carry a .380 with a barrel slightly less than 4" As the gentleman said, it wasn't a competition. I feel my weapon is adequate and if it performs as it should, 3 or 4 rounds should be more than adequate for anything less than a bear. I understand that small is great for concealed, but the 2" barrel shortens the fps velocity significantly. If you're not happy or guessing, spend some time with a qualified instructor to fully understand what you're relying on.

With the.38, you mentioned a different finger placement on the trigger between single and double action. I became certified as a timer by the AAU back in the day of wind-up stopwatches. For accuracy, the start/stop technique is to put the crown of the watch under the first joint of your finger where there's less padding, and then take up the small amount of vertical slack in the mechanism. You can parallel that motion to a trigger and primary/secondary travel. My question is why change finger placement on a trigger?

@@GunSam I don't think that ammo is actually in SAAMI limits. That said, the 357 Magnum, as you know, was created by overcharging 38Spl loads. Ideally the powder should fill the available case volume for consistent ignition and burn. There is a reason why I have some 38 Short Colt and 38 Long Colt brass on hand. No, they were high and left. The downrange camera is not correct in how it's shown. Like if you look at the steel target, it's head is at tall as the top of the hill right? When I was going for a head shot you saw those few hit in the same spot on the steel, the misses were just above that, left and high. But the camera picks it up right and low because it is picking it up from under the target, not as high as the target. Wish I could have it level but I cannot or I would shoot the camera.

I wouldn't call them wild misses. If you look at the regular camera angle, the steel is 30 feet from the top of the hill. Downrange camera, top of hill is as low as steel. What that means is that misses that are 1" off the target, can look 5 feet to the left or right. No joke. It's that much skewed from stretching on Gopro's part as well as angle with camera below target. Like at 8:55, if you can zoom in my cropped section, the bullet misses a head shot by a couple inches high, only problem was elevation as windage was perfect. Yet the downrange camera shows a miss a couple feet to the right and low, yet it was high and centered.

Also, Underwood seems to lower or raise the fps so trying to buy the same round is getting difficult. I know they are all rated on the box for 4" revolvers so two inch I would expect at 100fps lower. Thoughts??

+P is nothing more than pressure designation. In order for all things to be equal in terms of velocity always being higher with +P, than all gunpowder would have to be the exact same. There are hundreds of varieties of gunpowder out there, they all have different attributes like burn rate. You could have a powder that gives high velocity with low pressure, or have one that gives low velocity with high pressure. If you were to take lets say 158 gr SWC VS SWC-HP that were identical brand, same velocity rating and one was a +P, it could also be the same powder and powder charge but the HP is seated deeper, thus increasing pressure as the hollow cavity length has to go somewhere. Sometimes manufacturers will develop a load that does what they want, then pressure test it later and if it happens to go over pressure, they just list it as +P. Like .38 Special maxes out at 17,000 PSI, and +P maxes at 20,000 PSI. A load might be developed, then they pressure test it and it's 17,030 PSI or whatever, while it is essentially a standard pressure power, they have to label it as +P. OR you might get great powders loaded at 16,999 PSI and junk powders loaded at 17,001 PSI, essentially the same pressure but the +P will perform worse than the standard pressure.

Weak revolver rounds? Did I hear you mis-speaking comparing to revolver ammo from underwood? I have 158gr 357 from them rated at 1500fps. Their 44mag 240gr is rated above 1400fps, and 210gr 41mag that I have clocks in around 1500 as well....

In terms of .38 Special ammo, Underwood is as good as Buffalo Bore. So is most of their semi auto ammo. But their .357 Mag and .44 Mag is weak compared to Buffalo Bore. Like both make a 125 gr .357 Mag JHP, in my 4" 686 the Underwood one gives 1,450 FPS but the Buffalo Bore does about 1,650 FPS on average. The .44 Mag is the same way.

@@GunSam OK, that is a bit interesting. Which bullet was it if I might ask? The other factor is that might be a quirk with your firearm. I have used Buffalo bore rifle ammo, but for handguns have experience with underwood and double tap, though with 357 I have avoided 125gr ammo and opt for 158's. Thank you for clarifying your statement was not that the ammo was weak, just possibly not performing similar to other brands in the high power market(let's be honest the major manufacturers have downloaded everything significantly already). Next time I have access to a chronograph, I'll do a little testing with my own ammo.

What 38sp round do you actually carry in that 3” 856? I just got mine and was wondering your optimum choice…

Who thinks .380 acp would be comparable to .38+p, especially w/underwood ammo? Maybe 9mm vs. .38+p.
@GunSam
@GunSam Год назад
The people who used to troll me that .380 ACP is more powerful than .38 Special and superior in every way. Sometimes people think the things I say are made up, but I assure you, someone has said something like ".380 ACP is WAY more powerful than .38 Special" to me on my channel, dozens of times. I have also gotten "9mm+P is just as powerful as .357 Magnum" about 1,000 times.

I have a 9mm revolver that holds 5 rounds. I have a 9mm pistol that holds 7+1 rounds. Both guns can be pocket carried. The revolver is a little heavier, but has far more felt recoil and the trigger pull is about three times as heavy as that of the pistol. And of course, it's better to have 8 rounds than 5 rounds. It's easier to load a spare magazine into a pistol than to load a 5 round moon clip into a revolver. The only advantage to a revolver is that you don't leave spent shells laying around to spoil the environment and increase climate change. Those are the reasons I never use my revolver as my edc. Of course, someone will say a revolver is more reliable than a pistol. I call BS on that. I clean and lube pistol after every 100 rounds (you should do that with any firearm) and I never, ever have had any problems with that pistol, even with remanufactured ammo. Yes, there are pistols that are unreliable. I own a Remington R51 which I will never sell because I have too much character and love for my fellow man to do that. .380 v 38 special? Yes, I believe the ballistics are better with a 38 special. However, I have a Sig p365 in 380 which has all the good qualities of my 9mm pistol and one extra quality which neither the pistol nor the revolver have. The 380 has low recoil and a short, light trigger pull with an even shorter reset. I can put 3 rounds on target at a longer distance with my 380 in the same time frame that someone with a 38+p revolver is still getting his sights lined up after the first shot. I'd say 3 from a 380 is preferable to one from a 38+p.

As someone who shoots a lot of different platforms not with the FMJ ammo people often use, but with actual defensive hollowpoints like I do in all my videos, I can say 1,000% that semi autos JAM and the jam often. I have NEVER ever, ever had a revolver jam. And this is 15 years of shooting every week with both platforms. I call BS on YOU

@@GunSam A friend of mine who introduced me to shooting allowed me to fire a cheap semi-auto pistol and a used revolver he picked up at a pawn shop. I'll always remember how that revolver was the gun that went bang every time I pulled the trigger. The semi-auto would suffer FTF and FTE on occasion. The revolver gained a lasting respect from me. I also took it as a lesson to avoid really cheap semi-auto pistols and to test new ammo in them before feeling comfortable keeping them loaded in the gun.

You was pulling those shots at 40 because that single action shot was dead center most of the rest was left and I think your first shot was to the right which I don't blame you I do it myself too sometimes 🤷🏻‍♂️ especially revolver's it's not easy to shoot a revolver well personally I shoot single action in a revolver better I'd rather adjust my grip and take my time because most double action triggers are horrendous
