My name is Sam and together with my girlfriend Lyanne, I am on a quest to restore the beauty of this old Italian villa from 1895. Join us as we have to let go of our Dutch habits to fit in in our Italian surroundings, were the word 'plan' gets redefined and our tastebuds are awakened.
The goal of this project is to show that with limited financial means and a lot of optimism we can resurrect the beauty of this abandoned villa in a green and sustainable way. But most of all learn from everything that we encounter and enjoy it whilst we're at it.

I urge you to read up on no till gardening using raised beds. The heavy soil you have will take decades to amend...no matter how much soil and compost you add. Please read up on using raised beds combining hugelkulture and lasagna gardening methods. Much less work, more productive, sustainable, less costly and highly productive. Leave all the gravel and put beds on top of it...the gravel is fine under the raised beds and also as walkways between beds which should face East - west in the sunny locations on your land. we farm and garden in Texas.... Please read up on these gardening methods and save your money and your back! We love your videos and applaud your your work ethic!!!! :)

You may want to consider renting a wood chipper/shredder. It would clean things up around the villa. The mulch could be used to control weeds and keep the moisture in the ground. If you have larger branches, some machines can grind up too.

I've done gardening for 50 years and you have planted the best looking garden...but potatoes need an eye which you have they just need to be cut up where ever there is an eye... you could have bought a lot less potatoes...I think you are great keep up the good work...I just keep laughing and that is a great plan for more views and comments... don't forget to put irrigation to each and every bed... don't say I can't...those underground irrigation will save you a lot of time!!!!!

seeds have an expiry date btw, I found out some time ago. maybe end up spending more time on the garden than the house. potatoes go really well in bags and I found complementary planting is also good to research as you have more density, less weeding to do in the long term. its a great way to spend your time, very rewarding. pressing thumbs for you

You can skip a day at the gym. You will have to move a lot of stuff uphill in the future so one day you will have to do the slope or maybe you can create a temporary installation for a electirc winch and connect the winch to Tinky. You wearing Steelweld clothing so I bet you know your way with metal to make a sturdy installation.

For growing potatoes you need manure and depth, and chopping them. Also, local knowledge together with your enthusiasm, would help saving money and pass down traditions. Liguria is a harsh but beautiful place, totally different from the Netherlands, which is equally beautiful, and i take my hat off to your passion in bringing life back into Villa Oliva. Well done to you all, bravissimi!

You are going to spend a fortune on bags of potting soil. Add up your receipts. You could have a truckload of soil delivered and haul that up the hill. Probably a lot cheaper than individual bags. That is only a temporary solution unless you build raised beds, which I recommend for vegetables and flowers. You need a good 12 inches/30 cm of good soil for the vegetables. To help the trees amend the soil with gypsum and a lot of compost. You will need to dig very big and deep holes and then backfill with very good soil. Use leaf mulch for water retention which will also become compost. You can weigh one bag, then multiply by how many bags you’ve purchased. Likewise others materials based on receipts. You can make raised beds fast and easy with concrete blocks, plus move them or add to them easily until you know where your permanent beds will go. Yes, you bought too much. And yes, you should have waited until the ground was prepared before you bought so you didn’t buy too much. Too late now. Get the trees and vines in the ground first as they are expensive. Seeds are cheap, trees are not. You also need to stagger you planting so everything doesn’t harvest at the same time. Plant the potatoes and onions, etc every 2-4 weeks so you don’t harvest them all at the same time. You will extend your harvest this way unless you plan to preserve them by canning or have a very large freezer.
@Villa_Oliva
@Villa_Oliva Месяц назад
that's how we learn right, no biggie. compost wise, this surprised me as well, but this was actually the cheapest I could find. I will keep searching because I still can;t believe it. thanks for the tips!

@-htl-

You should check if there is not a place where you can collect a trailer full of composted ground, for like half the price. Do mind that in the summer your fruit trees are not going to like the pots in the Italiën heat. Get them into the ground routing asap! For the other land, remembering you need to finish a house. Make it simply flat and mowable and leave it. That is the most simple way to move forward. You can always make beds from them putting carton on top of the grass, compost on top of that, again a layer of carton and compost and plant/sow into it and all will break down by it self. So much less labor intensive. Start burning the wood and scraps. The larger the stacks the harder and by end of june they are growing into again and making it harder... keep it simple.

As with other comments - the added compost will disappear in no time - raised beds are the answer. Plus, if you don't mine me saying, when you open a packet of seeds, put the seeds into the palm of your hand, then you can use your fingers from your other hand to pinch smaller and more controllable quantities and better direct where you want them.

If you could find the time, you could pickle a lot of those onions. That way they won't be wasted. Pickled onions are gorgeous and last for years. Problem is time and of course you would have to buy a lot of jars. To save you next year, you only have to plant a section of the potatoes with eyes that have sprouted. Not a whole potato each time. My grandparents did this with great success. Any potatoes not planted are still good to eat. I can remember I planted a few things and the zucchinis were the only thing that took off. I didn't prepare the ground nearly as well as you have done. It is all a learning experience that's for sure. Best wishes.

May I make a suggestion? What are your favorite vegetables? Split the list into greens, summer veggies, and root vegetables. One set of beds are greens: lettuce, spinach, kale, cucumbers, green onions, radishes. One set of beds is root vegetables: potatoes, large onions, beets, carrots, and squash. One set of beds is everything on vines: tomatoes, peppers, beans, and peas. Last set of beds are cabbages, leeks, turnips, and broccoli. Now cross off anything you hate! Lol! I hate turnips.
