Thank you for all you do. You are one of the primary reasons I bought an electric car a Kia EV six. I gain so much knowledge from watching your channel also have a chargepoint Home charger at 60 A. I just follow your lead continue doing the great work you’re doing. I’m thinking of going into a new phase of my life selling electric cars for a Chevy. Since I already own an Electric car and know about all the charging power amps acceptable limits and all the apps that tell you which chargers are available around the country I am hoping I would be a good salesman. I will also definitely tell them to look into your channel for more information about their cars. Have you been able to test any Chevrolet cars yet? Thanks again Duain👍🏾

Love the factory tours! My hubs is a manufacturing engineer and I have had the privilege of seeing the insides of some impressive facilities. It’s always fascinating to see how things are made. Kudos also to Wallbox for bringing manufacturing back to the US. Arlington is a great location. Love your channel. So helpful when we were purchasing our first EV last year (Mach E). I’m still watching your videos and learning so much. Frequently if my hubs has a question about the car, he asks if you or Kyle have a video about it! And, usually yes. I appreciate What a huge contribution to EV revolution you are making. Also, I really loved hearing how you got into EVs on Out of Spec Dave. Great interview.

I was shocked that the Tesla factory didn't come here. The area is a transportation hub, has major freeways, both BNSF and UPRR, The alliance freight airport along with D/FW. It has a skilled labor pool, a university with strong engineering, and business friendly city & county governments. Of course it does lack the Austin party scene, so there's that.

Great to see that Wallbox is open. I live not far from there. I could bring a Lucid Air by for them to test, if they like. If I had known you would be in town I would have bought you lunch. And about the Quasar 2 or any 3rd party bidirectional charger. I can't imagine that being done without coordination with the OEMs. Pulling power from the battery has thermally different chemistry than charging. OEMs (and their warranty departments) will want to have full control over that process, if they choose to allow it at all.

Good one, Tom. One thing i'd like to see on the screens of fast chargers is a running commentary of the handshake process with meaningful messages and also reasons popping up on the screen of why charge rates drop/rise (e.g. grid issue, overheating etc) or handshake fails (incl telephone network issue with touch and go systems) - could do with seeing the same in the car too

Thank you so much for an intriguing overview of Wallbox's production facility in Arlington. But now we need to know, all the geeky details about the Wallbox Quasar 2 bidirectional DC charger, ASAP. Including what protocols, it uses and will it be a strictly DC bi-directional charger or a hybrid AC/DC bidirectional charger, like the Ford Charge Station Pro system? Or will like the dcbel-r16, or any other competing bidirectional charger. They made us wait 3 years for a bidirectional charger, hopefully they won't make us wait another 3 years. I anxiously look forward to your next report, on this innovative company. And thanks again for all your great reporting.

@Tron-Jockey
@Tron-Jockey Год назад
As well, make sure the screens do not face the Sun. I'm so tired of not being able to read the screens because of the intense glare or sun damage. Also, they should use glass because it doesn't yellow, or get thousands of tiny cracks that make viewing nearly impossible. I drive past several chargers everyday that have been unusable for well over a year now simply because the screens have become opaque due to significant yellowing and or disintegration of the screen. These chargers are otherwise working (and are listed a such), but I can't imagine how anyone could use them.

1,000,000 unit's is no joke for sure. However we sell 14-17million personal use vehicle's each year here in the U.S. And with evs at 5-6% of sales this year heading towards a doubling yoy for the next few year's. That means we are already over the current 250k run rate capacity of this single factory. With more manufacturer's also now NOT including a lvl2 evse charger unless paid for. We're gonna need at least a couple more of these factories asap. We also need a nationwide installation service built out asap. Even right now to keep up with ev sales you'd need over 10,000+chargers installed each week in homes to keep pace with adoption rates. 🤔

My two caveats about it is that it's designed as a system, That also includes photovoltaic capabilities, so it's kind of pricey at about $5,000, as a starting point.... Plus they were supposed to roll, it out, over a year ago and I haven't heard much about them, in terms of their rollout... or any type of updates whatsoever.... With the DCFC, I want to know if they "plug and charge", and what they are doing for reliability, and servicability. We have enough EVs hitting the roads, that these things need to be robust, and when they break, they need to get fixed quick, and their software should get suspicious if one of the 2 or 4 plugs isn't charging any vehicles. A broken charger is worse than no charger.

Yes, they're rated to deliver the full 500-amps. The units split power between the two cables, so I took it as 200 kW times two, not 400 kW to one cable. No EV would be able to accept that anyway.

Tom while I love the idea of EV cars and supercharging stations. I pictured these Chargers with a cord coming out the back end with nothing to plug into. And being its election time I'm going to point out the donkey in the room there is no way at this time that we have the infrastructure to power all these car chargers without some massive infrastructure rebuilding. You saw what happened in Texas with only 20% windmills and solar panels just won't cut it. And with coal plants being shut down we're going to start looking like Europe. This is not politics this is reality. All electric vehicles do is move the demand from Ice vehicles using oil as in gas and Diesel to electric vehicles using coal and Natural Gas by the way in your conversation with Alex you mentioned apartment complexes being more or less forced to offer car chargers. What will happen is apartment complexes will just take away the parking because it costs tens of thousands of dollars to bring in the amount of wiring required to be able to handle the high amperage required to run these chargers. The price of 14 gauge wire with ground for 100-ft roll can cost anywhere from 50 to 100 dollars. Now imagine for a 240 volt system you need a minimum of 6 gauge wire which each apartment complex will need multiple runs at hundreds of feet. And that's just the wiring not including the battery chargers and the breaker boxes and Breakers. Then you have to add in the labor to put it in.
@Tron-Jockey

In 1915 we didn't have the infrastructure for the few gasoline vehicles that existed much less the 10's of millions that were coming. You couldn't drive across a major city much less a large state and be guaranteed to find a gasoline station that was open or would even have any gasoline to sell. Surely you can see the effect it "failed" to have on the adoption of ICE vehicles. Your argument makes little sense. Already infrastructure is being rapidly upgraded. "...in reality, wind energy accounts for very little of the crisis in Texas. Some wind turbines did freeze. But it wasn’t just that one part of the electrical grid that failed-the entire system was unprepared for the extreme weather, which caused demand to spike (as people needed more energy for heat) and throttled supply, as gas wells and pipelines froze, and power plants shut down because of the cold. Coal and natural gas account for more than 80 percent of the state’s power capacity, and as Princeton University energy systems engineer Jesse Jenkins has documented, failures related to those sources of energy accounted for a far more significant share of the problem than did frozen turbines. Roughly 40 percent of the capacity that the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which oversees the state grid, was depending on from thermal sources (gas, coal, nuclear) simply wasn’t available. If there’s one primary culprit, according to ERCOT, it’s natural gas providers. In The Texas Tribune, Michael Webber, an energy resources professor at the University of Texas at Austin, described the failures of the natural gas industry as “spectacular...” - Zoë Carpenter, 2/19/2021, from an article in "The Nation" Yes electric vehicles move the demand from Ice vehicles using oil (gas and diesel) to electric vehicles drawing energy from the grid. According to the EPA website as of 2020 the grid mix is: Nuclear (20%), Renewables (20% and rising), Natural Gas (40%), Petroleum (1%) and coal (19% and dropping). However, with EV's getting their energy from a mixed grid CO2 is significantly reduced per mile and and less energy is wasted per mile. Please spare us any attempt at a riposte concerning CO2 and plant growth. Beyond CO2's effect on Ocean Acidification and the increased growth of certain non-edible plants and trees please consider the conclusion of recent studies concerning rising CO2 levels and the negative effects on the growth of "food" crops. Yes an increase in CO2 can make certain plants grow but so will Bull $h!+ unless there's too much of it. It's nice that they are installing chargers in apartments but in reality apartments won't need to have chargers for the same reason they don't have gas pumps, they're simply not essential. The number of new charging stations being installed is huge and will make it nearly impossible to live anywhere where there won't be a charger within a few miles. Most new EV's are getting between 250 and 350 miles per charge. The average American commuter will need less than 50 miles each day (less than 12 kWh of electricity), and will likely need to charge less than once a week. How is visiting a neighborhood charge station on your way home once a week any different than visiting a local gasoline station?

It's too bad that the Hypernova can't intelligently split the power at less than 100kW fractions. It would be much nicer if a KIA Niro and a Hummer EV both share a stall and the Niro got it's 75kW and the Hummer got the rest at 325kW. And as the Niro got to a higher SOC and was only pulling 54 kW that the Hummer would then be able to pull 346kW. But it seems like it would only be 300 for the Hummer and a 100 kW block for the Niro. 300kW doesn't sound bad for the hummer, but say it was an ID4 and a Hummer. Now it's 200 kW for the Hummer and 200 for the ID4 with the ID4 only pulling 125 kW. I feel like this s a step backwards compared to newer balanced chargers.

What car can handle 400 watts???
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney
That's 400 kW, and currently no. The highest I have seen was when I charged the Hummer EV and that charged at 367 kW.

1,000,000 charger per year or 1,000,000 charger total?
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney
1,000,000 per year run rate, possibly higher

great info. they need to get their costs down. emporia 48a is 100 cheaper than their 40a. and youve rated both highly. also would rather support emporia being CO based.

I think Solid State Batteries that can charge faster are very important to the success of EVs. 30 minutes is far too long.

FYI, my service line broke off the house from my house and my wallbox stopped working, I reached out to customer service and I never received an email saying what to do or if they would replace the unit. However I unplugged it and waited 24 hours then plugged it in and started working again but my complaint is that nobody communicated to me what to do this is unacceptable and I want to let people know that customer service is poor.

@@laloajuria4678 - It's the power being transferred that determines the charging speed, not "necessarily" the voltage. 800V does allow for half the amperage for the same power transfer as compared to 400V (allowing for the use of a thinner, lighter charging cable with less power loss), but similar power levels could be achieved with 400V systems also. However, above 250kW a 400V charging cable would become unwieldy likely needing to employ much thicker copper wire to control heat and subsequent power loss, (might even require some sort of thermal cooling).

What I want to know is how long did it take for the charging to initiate? It looks like there was an edit removing some of the waiting time.

Why would you think they won't install Tesla connectors on their products now that they are allowed to? I would imagine they will. All of the existing EV charging manufacturers would have also installed Tesla connectors if they were allowed to. Tesla wouldn't give anyone permission to do so, that's why only EVgo has Tesla connectors on its chargers, and that agreement only happened very recently.
