The reason uncle Chael never missed weight is simple. He was and is a professional and his word matters to him. On another note this is a good reason for 1 hour before fight weigh ins. Force fighting at natural weight. If you walk around 147 you fight 155. It's maddeningly simple to fix.

I walk around at 170lb and cut to 155lb twice a year, I dont need a scale to see an 11lb difference during that process, its night and day.

To be fair, most people will experience dehydration, at least once. Usually via being ill or accident (camping, exercise, hiking or something) but not forced hydration from cutting weight. Unfortunately I've experienced it maybe a dozen times in the past 4 years, thanks to cancer (and recovery) treatment

That's what went through my mind when I read about the weight miss"just don't show up"

They need to make harsher penalties for missing weight, the pay cut is not enough. I think as it’s done in title fights (where you don't get the belt), if you miss weight in a regular fight your ranking should not be affected. If you win you stay where you are in the rankings, and still give up some of your purse, while if your opponent wins considering he accepted, he gets the extra money and moves up in ranking. If you get 2/3 minor weight cuts you either move up a weight class or you cancel the contract. For a miss this huge you may just wanna cancel the contract, or force a move up.

I know chael just makes videos for the sake of it, or perhaps for the sake of promoting his sponsors. But my thought on showing up even when missing weight is that weigh in's are a press event , it is an opportunity for the fighter to help promote their own fight. And if you know you already failed badly and will have pay massively cut and accept it calmly beforehand, you can just enjoy it for what it is and even intimidate your opponent with how much bigger you are

The most extreme case that comes to mind for me is Priscila Cachoeira showing up to fight week 30 lbs. over for her fight against Cortney Casey. 30, that's not a typo. Except she didn't even weigh in, and the fight was cancelled. The official explanation from her team was that she fell in the bathtub at the hotel and hit her head. I think the tub is 3-0 at this point.

It's all about being scared of people judging him. So in his mind missing weight by 12lbs is better then missing weight by 15lbs.

I wanted to get into mma some 11 years ago . I drove from fresno, california to Elko, Nv to fight at a reservation where a SLC promoter was putting on an event. I had no guide or idea about contracts or anything like that. I was pretty fresh out of the military and wanted to fight. I am promised to be paid and undisclosed amount. I drive out there and my opponent is 20 lbs over weight. They ask if I still want to fight but make it clear that if I don't I won't be paid. I ended up losing and afterwards when they are paying out fighters right there at ring side they ask "are you a professional or an amateur?" To all the fighters. If you made the mistake of saying amateur like I did, I was only given the amount of money it took to drive there (not back). The experience ruined mma for me for years as I saw it as a dirty and shitty business even though I love to fight.
