Smart Home security cameras are becoming more popular and this also means that many of them are powered by USB power. Sometimes, you want to install a security camera where there is no household power outlet nearby. Even if you have the longest available USB cable on Earth (5 meters / 16 feet) it still may not be long enough.
Here is a simple solution that allows you to potentially extend your power cable up to 45.7 m / 150 feet. Watch on to find out more and find the links to buy them below.
Use this with our other DIY external power solutions too. If you haven’t already watched these DIY videos on how to install External Power or Solar Power for wire-free battery powered eufy security cameras then check them out below (They might work for other security cameras like Arlo, Wyze, Ring, Reolink and Nest too):
External Power solution → • DIY external power for...
Solar Power solution → • Cheap solar for securi...
See how easy they are to install → • How to install a Wirel...
NOTE: If you plan on using this solution for both data transfer and power then these adapters may not work. The adapter you use must be compliant with the USB standard the device supports.
Basic adapters like the one in the video (that do not have external power) likely only support USB 1.0 or 1.1 standards. If you need USB 2.0 or higher you will have to find a solution like a USB hub or USB repeater or adapter that fully supports USB 2.0 or higher.

Very informative video. Question I have is, would you recommend using CAT5 Ethernet cable (your method in this video) or USB extension with chipset signal booster for Yi outdoor security camera? I need about 25 fr to reach an outlet. Thanks
@FrakkingCreations
@FrakkingCreations 2 года назад
Thanks for commenting. I can't say for sure as I don't have the Yi outdoor camera or the signal booster. As I was showing in the video, you will have to test it out to be sure. It would also depend on the particular brand/model USB extender or Signal booster you get since hardware inside could affect how well it works. One note is that I don't think there is any signal you need to boost. It's only the power that the device can deliver that is of concern. The method I show in the video could be enough. If your camera needs more power to run then a booster that can supply more amperage may be best. Hope that helps.

I don't think this will work for your case. The adapters I showed are only USB 1.1 and will likely not work for USB devices that will need USB 2.0 or higher. This is more a hack for devices that don't use data on USB, just power. That said. You might want to look into USB Repeaters that are USB 2.0 compliant and higher. That might more suit your needs. I can't say for sure as I don't have these webcams. Typically, webcams connected to computers still need data as part of the connection. Since these type of adapters are only compatible up to USB V1.1, I believe, they won't work with most webcams. Webcams typically need v2 and up for USB specifications.

this is useless BS to sell stuff. if you just want power for the USB and not data you could just use a simple power cable 110 or 220v. especially if you use this connecting box. if you don't want data Internet cable is completely unnecessary. with a one and a half mil Don't know the AwG, that will be pretty low voltage drop. I'm in the box you can easily connect with wago order American equivalent.

@FrakkingCreations
@FrakkingCreations Месяц назад
No. This is not for that. These have USB connectors and will not plug into the ethernet port of a router. There are specific devices that push power onto Ethernet cables that you might want to look into. It is called PoE or Power over Ethernet. Specific PoE devices will push power onto Ethernet cables and PoE compatible devices can be powered through them.

@FrakkingCreations 3 года назад
Use a process of elimination to try to determine what is preventing it from working. Test the charger to make sure that works, then the USB cable by itself, then try different ethernet cables with the adapters. You can also try with a shorter cable first.
@FrakkingCreations
@FrakkingCreations 3 года назад
You can also try charging different things like a smartphone or tablet too to see if it's the camera that's not accepting it.
@cctvsecurity3589
@cctvsecurity3589 10 месяцев назад
But we need to consider that adapter cost also right it we have more devices? Do you think if I use long usb extension cable ,will it work? Because i have same problem and I have 4 cameras and power point is so far, right now i am using a ugly power extension box wiring which is not looking good
@FrakkingCreations
@FrakkingCreations 10 месяцев назад
Because this is DC power, the longer you extend the wires, the more the power loss. Since this is a DIY hack it may not work for all cases. An extra long USB cable may work better but it also suffers from this issue. Also, I haven't seen too many extra long USB cables in existence. It depends what length you need, though. Have you tried to see if the adapter I showed works for you?
@cctvsecurity3589
@cctvsecurity3589 10 месяцев назад
@@FrakkingCreations ,first of all thanks very much for your idea and for me there is a cost concern , yes I too figured out that we can't trust usb extension as device may not get desired power all the time. So I did research on some things , your idea is also good , but it will be costly to buy 4 adapters and I need network cables also , but if we have 4 or 5 cameras , then I guess we need to purchase separate adapter and cost is a concern . So I planned to go with power wire extension by tapping all the device plugs and final wire will go to my room and wire will run through my roof ,i haven't executed , but this is my plan.

This may not work well for webcams as most webcams will need USB 2.0 and up. These are USB 1 so the data rate will not be fast enough for most. It may work but not guaranteed. You might want to look for USB 2 or 3 repeaters instead

Would this be possible using a solar panel as the power source and then using a usb to usb-c cable plugged into the adapter. I’m trying to find a solution to solar charge the eufy L20 solo cam, 7-10 metres away. I heard it charges fine with a direct connection to a solar panel but an adapter apparently won’t work for it. I was thinking of trying to find the longest usb to usb-c cable I could find as it would be a direct connection. Thank you again for the brilliant content would love to hear your thoughts?
@FrakkingCreations
@FrakkingCreations 2 года назад
Did someone try using the same adapters with USB-C cables where it didn't work? I can't imagine why it wouldn't work but then again, I don't have the Eufy L20. It may also depend on the solar panel they are using too. Some may not output enough power. The original Eufy panel is a low output panel so maybe a panel with low output was used. There may be some power loss from the adapter.
@daniel1117
@daniel1117 2 года назад
@@FrakkingCreations They used the Eufy solar panel with a micro usb then a micro usb to usb-c adapter. Your correct this should work. Would a usb extender cable reduce the power output much from the solar panel? I only need 10m, so like one 5m extender then another 5m cable. If it does I’ll do this method, this method looks great.
