Quick video showing how the truck is coming along. It's been on jackstands for a few months, so I finally got to pull it out and clean up the garage space.
The truck looks amazing it's going to be gorgeous. I've got a 1998 Ford explorer that I'm working on and that body is clean I wish I could buy something like that instead of repairing all the rust on mine.
@@robertphillips4616 Are working on a 54 F100, We decided to use an interceptor 2008, Made for a lot more work. Then again up here in Alberta it would be difficult to find a Ford Explorer all wheel drive with a 5 liter
Nathan's Garage. My passenger door was bad for a long time. We had to slam it HARD, then one day it flew open while I was turning a corner. Now it shuts extremely easy.... of course it didn't really shut in the video, bit usually it does close that easy.
Which Ron Francis wire harness did you use? I have a 53 f100 on a 2000 explorer frame and can not find a stand alone wire harness to make my motor run.
Hi I just got a 52 f1 and I like how your truck is set up and I’m going to do the same. Did u have to cut the chassis and did your run in to any problems when setting the f1 body to the explore?
You do have to cut about 8"-12" off the front of the frame (basically the stock bumper mounts). And no, there weren't any problems. The old bodies fit right over this chassis like it was meant for it.
Nice job. I wonder if I can swap a 53 Ford panel truck to an 06 Ranger extended cab chassis? I have both of these vehicles. If it's doable, I'd like to power it with a small Cummins.
I would say anything is doable if you really want to do it. You will have to cut 15" out of the frame to make the wheelbase correct. I would bet you would have to cut a lot of the rear floor out also, which might not be cool depending on end goal.
Hey with using the Ron Francis harness for the engine what did you have to do for the transmission being it’s a aode correct? Did the wiring harness fix everything or did u have to go with a aftermarket brain for the transmission?
What is the model number for the wiring harnesses? And did you do any upgrades to the engine? How’s the interior going? I know I’m asking a lot but I’m starting building my truck, I already purchased a good running explorer awd and like your set up.
Hi beautiful.. do u swap only th frame o u put motor transmission and the electric? Do u used the original f100 firewall o the explorer firewall? Thanks
Frame, motor, transmission, transfer case, suspension. No wiring or electronics from Explorer. No body parts from explorer-- used F-100 firewall. Cut floor of cab to clear transmission and made a cover for it.
Do you mean paying someone to do it? I would say there is about 100-120 hours to get it to this point. Probably around $3500 in parts (wheels and wiring mostly). So if you are paying a shop to do this, you would be around $13000 at this point. Probably double that to finish to a painted driveable rig.
@@gobowz It is now painted and I'm working on the interior. I really need to do an update video one of these days. Several other projects holding me back.
I just bought a 1950 Ford Truck and figured out that the wheelbase was almost identical to the explorer, searched youtube and wow! Nice work. I'm going to go with an 06-10 explorer. I had not even considered all wheel drive until watching your video. Have you driven it yet? I kind of like the hotrod look of wide tires on the back and average size tires on the front. I'm pretty sure the AWD requires tires of identical height. Have you looked into that issue? Any advice? once again...nice job
Yes, my tires are exactly the same front and rear because of the AWD. That is why I did the 2 different offsets, so it would look to the average person like it has bigger wider tires on the rear. It also has a little bit of the "hot rod rake", where nose is lower than rear. No, I still havent driven it. Interior is at custom shop in Phoenix. Putting everything else together in next couple of weeks.
I didnt want the independent rear suspension of the 02-newer explorer because it requires raising the bed floor further. My bed floor is raised 6". With tailgate closed you can barely tell it isnt stock.
@@robertphillips4616 Thank you so much for your quick response to my questions. The 06-10 v8's came with 245/65/r17 tires which are 29.5" tall. What are your thoughts with putting 225/65/r18 on front and 325/45/r18 on back? (both are 29.5"tall) I'm sure spacers may be needed up front to make it look right and an offset rim will be needed in back to clear frame.
@@robertphillips4616 Thanks for point that out to me. I looked and you are correct, the newer frames stick up higher. I may take those rubber mounts out and let the bed sit on the frame as well as create a couple of ugly humps in the bed to cover up the shock towers...or maybe extend the wheel wells in a little bit. The exhaust will also have to routed either in front of the rear wheels or just under the differential. It's difficult to tell EXACTLY what is going on thru pictures on the internet.
@@doubledocjackieweave According to the tire size calculator, that should work fine. If the tire diameters are off slightly, I think there is enough play in the transfer case and/or axle gears to allow for that. I was going to go with a 19"/20" combo just because I already had the tires. And yes, I would space the front wheels out as far as you can to make it look right. The Explorer track width is skinny.
The truck is painted and the upholstery is getting done. I have painted the interior a couple times and may do it again (not really good with the color). I will be driving it in the next few weeks. Will make new video for sure.
First off, awesome truck! BEWARE PEOPLE OF THE EXPLORER 4.0 ENGINE...look up changing timing chain. Engine has to come out of car, and oil pan comes off. NO KIDDING...
Wheelbase is off by 1.5". The front of frame is cut off where stock explorer bumper bolts on. The front wheels are centered in the wheelwell (unlike stock, which is set back a couple inches and looks weird). The rear isn't exactly centered, but nobody will notice.
