This tractor is the epitome of, "I have all this spare crap laying around. I wonder if I can make something out of it?" I admire the ingenuity behind it. The changes/additions you've made just add to it. Nice job.
Very cool tractor! I bought a 1956 Economy with a Wisconsin AEN back in July. I will probably be boring the motor out and doing some clutch work thanks to your tutorial in part 1. Thanks for these videos!
That thing's pretty cool, I'm glad you actually drive it around and show it operational after fixing it. A lot of people don't. Makes it worth watching the whole 2 part series. Good video's.
You did a fine job getting that tractor running again. You showed very good troubleshooting skills. I don't know why some people put such large buckets on their home made front end loaders. The bucket should be sized for the weight and traction of the tractor. Won't get much work done if one can only go less than a foot into the dirt before the rear wheels are are spinning because it does not have enough ass to compensate for the over sized bucket. These are supposed to be for small back yard jobs. Not knocking the guy that built it, It is still an accomplishment to assemble one of these from scratch. Regardless you got it running very good and got loader working well too.
Thanks Jim. It is a large bucket, and a heavy one too at that. I think the steel is about 3/16" thick? Should only be 1/8" which is more than enough for a tractor this size.

What a nice change to watch someone who knows what they are doing, and further more is articulate and therefore able to explain it! All the idiot who post videos on 'first start in x number of years,' should be made to watch one of your videos, instead of just scratching the points with a bit of sand paper, doing nothing to the fuel system, and then poor petrol strait into the intake, or use a spray of easy start!! So good for you, and all the best with what ever else you do!

I didn’t know much about these garden tractors. I didn’t know so much work could be gotten out of a Briggs or Koehler. Sure beats a shovel and wheel barrow!

It was especially satisfying to see how you solved the clutch lever looseness by drilling out and installing over sized pins in the bored out holes. Lol, I also recycle everything. I could use a front end loader around here. I like how that one operates. You did a good job on it.

That 301 found the perfect home, sounds great, works good to,even with the "broken in"hoses. Spun the tires with ease. Nice. Felt like a dork, smiling the whole time watching this.
Not sure if you still have that or have changed out anymore lines. But I would highly recommend replacing the lines nearest your body. That should have upwards of 2500 psi and it could put your eyes out or burn your skin when they blow. Tractor supply has them cheap so no need risking your life with them. I work on equipment all the time and that one on the right hand side sitting in seat is like a loaded gun. Cool tractor though

I now have three of these tractors and plan to put a John Deere LUC 2 cylinder combine engine in one of them. Should be an easy swap since the engine has a clutch on it and all I'll need to do is remake the shaft to fit the JD clutch plate or use an economy clutch plate in the Deere engine.
Kohler engines are the very best out there. I have two Power King tractors, both with Kohler engines in them. My International Harvester Cub Cadet use to have a Onan engine in it, till it went bad, got a good old Kohler engine in it now. Couldn't be any happier.
This two part series was indeed very interesting and fun to watch coming together. It's a pity that 'big ol' Briggs & Stratton ' engine didn't make it to the finish line but there's nothing much wrong with those Kohler engine's either.( it's just that I'm more of a fan of B&S engines than I am of Kohler's.) My favorite air cooled engine would be the Wisconsin. I'll look forward to the next project with just as much interest and enjoyment. Thanks for making these videos Jake.

A really great and special looking machine, though an enthusiastic guy with a fork could compete with the work load, it,s traction verses bucket should ensure a relaxed life, teehee.
Don't know if you will see this or not since it is 4 years old but, I think those brass cylinders are air cylinders not hydraulic. Not that it matters, just thought you would want to know. Obviously they work OK. Art from Ohio
Nice tractor 🚜 the only thing I would do if it was mine 1 replaced all the highdrolice lines 2 I would rebuild the old engine. or find a bigger engine thats in bad shape. now it's lacking power after you do that you will have a sweet tractor.
Holey line batman!! When you wind that Kohler up high, it almost sounds like an onan! I like that tractor a lot. I should have you look at my cylinders on my Sears loader- they creep really bad, and don't have a lot of lifting power.
Haha that was the last line I figured would go... I was betting on the crispy ones going to the control valve. Creep would be the cylinder packing, as for lifting power... I betcha the pump is getting tired.
I like how you plug away at the problems, so calm, until the hydraulic oil leaked! Then you moved quick to shut it down. The one thing I don't have us a FEL....And that loader is homemade, but looked strong. Put a weight box on the back and it could be a real work horse.
That HYD leak was a surprise for me! The line was in pretty ad shape though. Sounds like you got a good project going with that Bolens. Had a few tube frames pass through here, just for repair work though. Haven't had the chance to own one yet. Always liked the 14XX and 1886 Huski tractors.
Very cool machine and very well done, I too am resourcefully cheap. And I'd of tryed the lines and see what happened too. Buy them as money allows as I say
When using the loader and you drive into a pile and before the tractor starts to spin curl the bucket, or roll it back and it will load better than just lifting the bucket !!!
I use to work for a place that ran a dealership . They offered a 2418 model that had duel trans . Great little work horses . all american made...USA BABY !!!!
I am wondering as about the angle iron you used a cutoff saw to trim for the engine mounts. The angle iron base has only one hole to mount the engine per side ??? Wat that an intentional design feature to line the engine with the drive shaft ??? I really like you logic when it comes to the drain plug slow drain to remove the water. The old oil is better than running dry gears. Hydraulic cylinders that are on the tractor have been redone. The cylinders are the type that are totally rebuildable. The four long studs that hold the cylinders together are the give away. The original tubes were steel which rusted out and were replaced with heavy wall brass. These lasted indefinitely when clean oil was used. One question Jake, the Kohler engine you used for replacement was off of what machine ??? Nice work fella too.
The lift valve would drive me nuts like that. any loader tractor I've driven you pull back on the valve to lift and push to lower not the other way round :Z
It did with me! Why the guy had it like that I don't know. I may swap the lines at some point. Completely backwards from anything that's been here with a loader.
A very neat tractor for sure! That loader looks like it is stdaight outta the 40s with the tubing arms and rebar supports. As for that roller bearing in the front hub, Ive dan into a couple like that at work. Some sort of cross between a tapered roller bearing and a ball bearing. Extra weird but most likelh timkin.
What a great series, Jake! Now admit it...we all knew it was gonna rain hydraulic fluid as soon as you fired that system up....LOL. Doesn't it make you nervous to have the battery right next to your face?....can it be moved or at the very least can you make a plastic/sheet metal blast shield/dashboard? Love watching you bring these tractors back to life, Jake.
Thanks Dave! Ya know, I figured for a weeping hose or a small leak, but not a full blow out. That hose was destined for it lol. Never thought much about battery placement until I read a post about one that exploded in someones Case. It's one of those things you hear about once in a rare while but never expect it to happen to you... of course we all know how that goes!
@@5Tractorguy It's bad enough to have gas tanks and batteries positioned below the seat..that's some protection. If that battery goes, your grille is it's first stop! Even if you're standing to the side, it rains down from head high!...are you convinced yet?

I can! They weren't rusted or real bad. Good enough for the tractor since it hasn't been used since the year this video was made. If it was seeing everyday/week use, you bet I would've replaced them.
I am glad that you pissed off the horrible Briggs engine they were designed in 1908 and have not changed since, the Kohler is a much better choice more reliable and less vibration.
Each has their own, but from a seasonal use standpoint, Gravely was more well built in terms of attachment ruggedness, ease of changing them out, more mechanically friendly, and operator comfort. Economy was a great tractor for cultivating, tilling, small farm use, etc.
Dude you don't split that to put the belt back on it you put a link belt on it s segmented it comes apart and goes back together and you can take pieces out to make the length you want hence the words link-belt
You can't beat that! But you're like me and have to change the boom lines around! I got into a deal with my pal that 'gave' me the wood splitter in remounting his backhoe on his tractor, maybe a 6-ish Deere with a so-called quick release hoe. I'd done it many time with a 450 loader that set down in the mounts but this goofy tractor had to go UP! We stacked firewood under the outriggers and finally got it wobbled up to latch up. The bucket took a while to limber up but it did after a little while. He was a little gun shy but I'd been around too many to be buffaloed and we got it. It's still on it too. He took it off to try mow with but I don't think the mower and 3-point hitch would work because of the hoe mount hardware. I told him he'd never take it off again because it was too handy. The hydraulics were ogg the tractor system so just cleaning quick connects and off he went. We always run into something. The splitter was full of water too. I didn't have any fabric to go around the lines in case they broke so I used foam pipe insulation and duct tape. I don't want a squirt under the skin and you wouldn't either. Geez, sounds like a nightmare to change that thing out! He better be leaving that thing on there. I worked on a Magnatrac MT1800 (one in my intro) that had a backhoe. Thing slid onto 2 sub frame rails that stuck out the back and had four 5/8" bolts that held it on. I never had it off, but the customer said it was a pain in the neck to attach, had to hook up the long HYD lines, walk it around, then back the crawler into it... wasn't made to remove. When you commented did you do/select anything different? This only shows up in my "creator studio" comments feed, can't find it on the videos page for some reason... Who knows, probably another YT glitch.
@@5Tractorguy O don't know either, Jake. I haven't changed anything but 10 does stuff all the time whether I know it or not. Goofy. The DEERE could be dropped but to use a bush hog or the 3-point would be to take all the hoe mounts off and then have to replace it all to put the hoe back on. I think he';s going to just leave it on. He's got enough mowers and a hoe will fix a lot of stuff that a mower won't do as you well know. It was just backwards and blamed interesting. So keep on wrenching and picking. I'll buy a DVD!
Love your channel. Awesome content. Quick question.. picked up a '53 jim dandy and pulled the clutch and motor out, had an old briggs in it. I have another briggs for it but appears like the output shaft is about 1"-1.5" shorter on the replacement motor. Same diameter. Will this be a problem for this setup? what was the length of the output shaft on that kohler? Thanks
Good video. Just picked up a 1968 Economy Tractor and you have given me much needed info for working on my tractor. I will be sure to change all fluid especially the transmission and rear wheel oil. By the way, what type of oil is needed for the transmission and rear wheels? Thanks again, Dan
Hey Dan, good to hear another one will be brought back into use. Either 80W-90 or 80W-140 would work fine for gear oil. I use 80W-90 in everything here...
Been planning on it... Once all the leaves are down and cleaned off of everything, I'll uncover all the stuff outside and do an overview. There's a lot of equipment that came in this year.
@@NatePerzanoski A hand clutch? Would just make it easier for me to clutch if I'm not using the loader and I have a hand free. I have to scrunch my leg pretty good under the steering column to push it.
