I used to own a 62 Catalina,it wasn't a 421sd just a 389cu"regular Catalina.I still loved the car for it's style, black on red and it was one of my favorite cars.
I love the pre-muscle car Pontiacs. And I love that color on those Pontiacs. I had a relative that had a ‘64 Lemans with a 326 and a 4 speed. It was that color. I loved that car. It sounded a lot like this car. But that ‘64 was my introduction to early pre-65 Pontiacs.
My Father owned one,before my time. He boot legged with it. Wrecked it ,pulled engine n trans. Put it in 2 or 3 f85's Olds. Very fast ,tuff ,and rebuild able according to him. He also ran a big Buick engine, 425 I think. Still remember the center head in our basement as a small child. 2 4 barrels on it. He ran corn liquor, cigs,and fireworks in late 60's early 70's. Said he could cruise 100 mph with it in both cars. Had Oldsmobile rallies and hub caps to change looks of car. Carried 2 spares in back seat. Tires blew out more in those days. I love the early 60's Pontiacs. I had a 63 Bonneville convertible, but I realized it was gonna take more money and experience than what I had to get it where it needed to be, so I ended up selling it.
Show the engine compartment, l always wondered why they never had the 421 or 428cu in motors in the GTO'S. Would have made a lot of camaro's, chevelle owners mad. I had 2 67 GTO'S, 1 was a year old & the other one l restored
+jim dandy Besides a big-ass Ka-Chunk-Ka-Chunk cam, it sounds like solid lifters and considerably more than stock compression, maybe headers too. I`m thinking that`s more like a high 12-second car. My `66 421 HO (tri-power, 4 speed, 3.42 Posi) ran 13.80 @ 102 in stock form....those were great cars, never should`ve let mine go....
Stock it has solid lifters and with 11:1 compression off the show room floor with street tires the 405hp car would run high 13's, a full second faster than a 409\409hp Chevy. The only things faster in 62' and only by hair were the Cobra and 413 Dart. The later 63' versions rated at 410hp at 13:1 with slicks ran low 12's and mid 11's in a Tempest that had an aluminum front end. The 421 SD was the only factory race motor Pontiac ever put in a production car. Also the only solid lifter Pontiac put in a production car. Granted in factory form the Poncho mills aren't known for handling revs past 6000rpm anyway a limitation that Chevy didn't have. The cam sounds like the stock cam.
It would rum mid to high 11’s. Stock motor, 421 Super Duty, dual quads 12 to 1 compression. Over 500 hp at the crank. Last GM factory backed drag motor. Was also the Pontiac NASCAR engine.
