1992 Cadillac Fleetwood - Misfire, Rough Idle, Poor MPG (Shorted Injectors)

This is typical of early GM fuel injectors (multec-1). On the 2.8L, 3.1L and 3.3L group fired systems, one shorted injector will cause a no start! On the sequential engines, like on this Cadillac, misfiring and rough idle is the typical complaint. Be aware of replacement parts and the characteristic differences you will see in a current ramp waveform. For you scope guys out there, this type of thing can have you barking up the wrong tree.

If not using the snapon scope and you don't use attenuator, will it damage the scope or just make the readings worthless ?

Mr. Danner I love the content, however, as a guy who's been watching your videos for a long time, the new over usage of editing it making the video super jittery, cutting to the next clip or scene every 5 seconds is making me dizzy, also the darker cinematic effect is making things feel like im high watching this or am wearing sunglasses in my house lol I kinda miss the raw natural vibe from your earlier videos, yea keep the HQ 1080p and everything but the over polishing is unnecessary, that's not why we fell in love with your videos, its your expertise and ability to teach, please understand this is not a knock on you or your son's abilities obviously he's become a pro with the software and kudos to him for that.. but its kinda like the original texas chainsaw massacre that was gritty, raw , almost made you feel like "is this real?" vs todays versions where its so prefect and clean and everyone is a model with oil of olay commercial perfect skin that it's not scary anymore... if that makes any sense cool... at the least take it into consideration , thanks for your time...peace

@@HOTRODRICO definitely great feedback and this is something Caleb and I have been actively discussing. Some of these are absolutely necessary to same a TON of time in the final production, but the overuse can be distracting to some. You will see less of what you are describing probably starting in July or August of this year! Others were saying the same. As for the lighting. That is my brothers shop. We are actively looking for an upgraded lighting system for him to help no only him but with our videos. So there is no cinema effect here that we are going for. Just bad lighting. We WILL do better! Really appreciate you and this comment. We will do better! I promise!

Loved your explanation of why you wanted to see a ramp instead of a straight shot up on the scope. This is the type of education you can't get from parts changers. Love learning details like this. I have a little bit of background knowledge on electrical but know very little about cars. Videos like these help to fill in the gaps so to speak and demonstrate to me how electrical theory is applied in automotive diagnostics.

Awsome Video! I take my hat off for you guys for being there for us to learn. Thank you! This reminds me of my first shorted injectors problem about 15 years ago. 1994 Chevy Lumina 3.1. It ran great while cold. As it got to operating temperature it would miss under load and longer it ran worse the miss would get. I was convinced that it was the ignition system... We all lost sleep on this one for a few days but eventually got it figured out. 3 out of 6 injectors were shorting out. We ended up swapping out all 6 and never saw the lumina again. Happy diagnosing to all!

most of them I replaced shorted injectors on, were all shortly after a water pump failure/coolant leak and running hot, not enough to blow head gaskets/warp heads, but they always killed the middle fuel injectors, then they'd run a bit rough until overheating the ECM drivers and die until cooled off. the first time I ran into that, I nearly replaced the ECM thinking it was bad! almost a parts cannon fail, except I recalled an older TBI, injector coil going bad and killing ecm, which I did replace without checking injector. fortunately back then it was easy as junkyard pulling one and chip swapping. I lost a whole $40 I think lol

Greetings from theNorwegianViking,Stefan :)
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 3 года назад
They will drop in resistance as they fail. 12.6 ohms is the spec. That one that was near 10 amps would have measured around 1-2 ohms. But sometimes these would only fail when they got hot, so measuring resistance can look near normal when they are cold. Also the current flow acts as the heat im talking about too. It stresses the windings where an ohmmeter does not. But you should be able to catch most with just an ohmmeter

It seems like injectors are a pretty common issue now on those DeVille’s. I just changed the injectors out on mine. A fun job indeed. Lol Also ironically, I too have an alarm problem. However my security light continuously flashes with doors shut and unlocked and stays solid when doors are locked. Normally it’s supposed to extinguish five seconds after. Also, if you need any reference material I own the entire factory service manual for it. It’s like 4 inches thick.

I've actually dealt with this before, and I found it by ohm ing out the injectors. 2 injectors were hogging all the pulse. No start. BUT it WOULD RUN on carb cleaner. (group fire. 3.1 Chevy Camaro) MTBE in the fuel ruined a TON of GM injectors
@billsmith2212
@billsmith2212 3 года назад
On my 1987 , 2.8 L , the injectors are buried under the intake plenum . I checked the ohm reading through the harness on each group of three . The actual problem was a sticking EVAP Purge Solenoid . It is pulsed and would stick open . It was intermittent and created a low vacuum condition and loss of power . I plugged the hoses to verify .

In the dialogue about not hearing an injector vs what was seen on the scope, I was left wondering if Danner wasn't simultaneously dealing with a mechanically stuck injector or two. I've only ever had to diagnose one of those cars. It already had eight remanufactured injectors in it and was missing pintle bumps in the voltage traces on about as many cylinders as what your car was missing on. Does that sound viable?
@ScannerDanner

The multec-2 would mechanically stick. Never saw that on the multec-1 like this caddy had. Plus this one ran pretty good under load, so even the shorted ones where still spraying a bit, at least 7 of them were

With that 2nd injector, the downward spike after the injector shuts off, its like a negative spike, Ive noticed that on other components before, that are failing and I know they have a flyback diodes for the collapsing magnetic field, but could that negative spike be the diode leaking threw due to the higher current on a shorted component?

Only the 1993 DeVille has the hood release latch under the passenger side grille (1991 to 1993 models).

Hey man. I have 2020 hyundai elantra My car act weird after 15k miles; engine does not run smoothly, transmission is not smooth, idle is not smooth, RPM some times fluctuate at idle and when it runs. I have to clean the throttle and reprogram it every 15k miles, but I don't know why it does like that since the car was new. By the way, I do all maintenance at time. Please give me any solution to solve this problem.

@@calebldanner nice! I’ve had a few of those z cars over the years. Love the car.. and the content man. I’m a younger Audi tech in the field and I’m learning so much from watching this channel. Everyone looks at me funny when I apply the fundamentals. But my diagnosis are 100 percent. So thank you Caleb, Paul and Danner.

I would love to take your classes are they online classes or are they near northern CA ? Just getting back into cars use to do more in high-school than went to construction and now just getting back in it again. Switching to michanic work and shutting down my handyman buisness cause my body can't handle construction anymore. I just bought the autel ms906ts scanner and looking into the autel osliscope as well as there 8 mil inspection camer that hooks to scanner. Also curious about if you can show more of the autel device stuff as I like your way of explaining how to diagnose. Thanks for all you do and show us out here as some people like to save money still and fix there own stuff.
