This is the theme music that NBC used for their final 3 seasons of NFL telecasts when they had the AFC package. It is one of my favorite sports themes ever.
I used Blaze Media Pro to capture this sound recording from NBC Sunday Night Football Extra online. This theme was played on NBC Sunday night Football Extra online most Sunday Nights prior to the start of the football game.
Here is a link to rapidshare where I uploaded an MP3 of this theme. It should be a little bit louder and slightly higher quality as I think some noise and a tiny bit of quality was lost after the youtube conversion.

You know what NBC should do one Sunday night, have a throwback telecast. Have original graphics and theme for just one evening. They could use this theme or another theme and have the graphics from that era. That would be awesome to watch.

That would be great. The old 70's intro. Then the disco theme from the 1980 and 1981 seasons. Maybe some "Send Them Victorious", which they sadly only used in 1985 (my first year watching the NFL as a kid), and of course, this theme.

This longer version was actually played during the closing credits of NBC's coverage of Super Bowls XXX and XXXII, and was also played during the end credits of the Hall of Fame game during the 2006 preseason.

19 years ago today was Super Bowl XXXII. January 25, 1998. The last broadcast of NBC having the AFC. I cannot believe it has been that long. Such great memories. Next season will mark the 20 year anniversary of the last season NBC had the AFC package and this awesome theme was on the air. Cannot believe how long it has already been.

My goodness how time flies. Sadly when I posted this almost 7 years ago now, my company and job went to crap with the worst office politics ever following July 2017 before the 20 year anniversary when this theme was last used January 25, 1998. It was the worst treatment and betrayal from upper management I once strongly believed in not even 6 months after I made that post.And it was not economic nor monetary related either. Coming to work for the 3 months from July 2017 to October 2017 was painful and an ordeal. Me and friends lost trust in upper management and one friend quit and then I quit a year later. Its a shame because the place once was great to work at. A shame not to celebrate what was once a given and also eventual Michigan football greatness because management became so bad almost overnight July 2017 and rest was history. But whatever, its been a while and this theme was great and almost 26 years now since it was last used regularly for NBC NFL telecasts in Super Bowl XXXII.

I think of the 1995 AFC Championship game between the Colts and the Steelers when I hear this theme. Jim Harbaugh throws a Hail Mary on the game's last play and Aaron Bailey nearly makes a miraculous catch but misses and Pittsburgh went to the Super Bowl.

This takes me back to 6th grade when John Elway won his first Super Bowl ring after getting beat so badly in his first three attempts. I remember NBC playing this song when they went to break after Elway's iconic helicopter spin and throughout the telecast. After that play, I just knew the Broncos would not be beaten in that game, despite being 14-point underdogs - it always gives me the chills. I wasn't even the biggest Elway fan, but he was the sentimental favorite that year. This music just fit the mood so perfectly and I love how this video incorporates images from XXXII, the last time NBC used this theme.

I remember as a kid anticipating and waiting patiently at 11:59 PM Eastern Time so that at 12:00 PM this theme song would blare loudly on my television. So many memories soo many great football games were played during those years. Soo many great NFL superstars some still here some are dead and gone. Just soo much nostalgia i knew when this song would come on at 12:00 then the 1:00 games that you were going to witness some memorable memorable football games be played.

Yes awesome theme. It was 19 years ago today on August 31, 1997 the 1st day of the regular season and only time ever the NFL regular season started in August and the last season NBC had the AFC package and this awesome theme music. The Michigan Wolverines won the national title that year. Every year since when NBC o longer had thew AFC, Michigan has never won even a Big Ten title without losing at least 3 games. I expect Michigan to have their best year since 1997 in 2016.

I can reply now. We finally had great seasons in 2021 and 2022 especially 2022. Winning Big Ten titles both years and going 12-2 and 13-1 and trips to CFP. We were oh so close in 2016 in a 50-50 spot. It was a long 5 year wait but it happened at last and then even better in 2022.

This is the best theme for NFL on NBC and the best CBS theme is the 92-93 version later used again from 98 to 02.

It was essentially the same theme that was used by CBS for Super Bowl XXVI and the 1992-93 and 93-94 season, only with a more powerful sound. Then for the 1999-2000 season and the 2000-2001 season up until the AFC Championship Game for that season, a new version of the theme was used. It was a lot different than the theme that was used from Super Bowl XXVI to the 98-99 season. A revised version of the 1999-2001 theme was introduced for Super Bowl XXXV in 2001 and was used for the 2001-02 and 02-03 seasons. Then beginning in the 03-04 season, CBS changed the NFL theme to Posthumus Zone which they continue to use to this day. I wish CBS would go back to the old theme, even if it's the 1999 version or the 2001 version. But I agree and say that both the 1999 version and the 2001 version of the old NFL on CBS theme are not nearly as good as the original version and the 1998 version of the theme.

In a perfect world, Sunday NFL coverage would be split between CBS (with the Frankie Vinci theme song for Sunday games), FOX and NBC (with this music for the afternoon games). All 3 networks get a weekly 1 PM/4 PM doubleheader as well as a Thanksgiving Day matchup. NBC retains Sunday Night Football with the John Williams music package. ABC would get Monday Night Football back with Hank Williams Jr. doing his famous 'ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?' before each game. CBS retains Thursday Night Football aside from Thanksgiving Night, which will go to NBC. ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX would rotate airing the Super Bowl.

Although if you clicked on one of the alternate camera angles, you could see different areas of the stadium and the players warming up from both teams while this theme was playing. Brings back so many great memories to watch players warming up while this great theme was playing. Also, about 15-30 minutes before the Cowboys-Packers game last season, even when on the broadcast cam, they showed some sideline reporter interview some Packer player while this theme was still playing in the background.

Randy Edelman composed the Last NFL on NBC Theme Song from 1995 to 1997. This was also the BGM of the Final NFL Season covered by GMA Network, Inc. under the auspices of Television and Production Exponents, Inc. and SilverStar Communications, Inc.

Yep, that's the one! I guess I haven't followed the Olympics quite as closely over the years. If you listen to the Brisco Country Jr. theme starting at around 0:20, and then listen to this one, it's virtually an identical chord progression...this one is just a faster tempo. Both are great themes.

Wolverine607, I feel your pain. As a young Lions fan in the 1990s, I just wanted Barry to win one so bad. Hearing this theme makes me want to cry, because this song was the glory days of the Lions. Ahh the good old days of the Lions are gone. Now as a grown man, i can't even watch them anymore, because 0-16 nearly broke my heart. All I wanted was to bring one Superbowl home. I know that during the 2008 season, for Sunday Night Football online (Sunday Night Football Extra), they played this theme if you opened the feed prior to the start of the game. It wasn't the pregame show though they were showing unlike on the television broadcast. There were different camera angles you could click on. The broadcast cam just showed the Sunday Night football logo prior to the start of the game while this theme was playing.

I cannot even bare to watch college football and basketball anymore as bad as things have gotten with no hope in sight for basketball. Hearing this theme brings back great memories even more so now than ever because it was used by NBC during their NFL coverage during a time when I was actually proud to be a Michigan Wolverine and the hated Spartans and Buckeyes didn't own Michigan in both major sports,

Your right about the television broadcast. I was talking about Sunday Night Football online if the feed is opened prior to the start of the football game in 2008, this theme was played. Once the game started though, it was exactly the same as the television broadcast with the SNF theme music between commercials and during the intro. Sunday Night Football Online is coming back for 2009, and I was predicting they would do the same thing that they did in 2008.

I always thought with this theme, it was the end of an era for NBC because they gave up rights to the AFC to CBS after the '97 season. Glad they have the Sunday Night game back and that theme's alright, just not the Faith Hill bit of it, but nothing beats this theme.

Man, Super XXXII was such a great one. Many of us though the Green Bay Packers were going to start a dynasty where they were going to go on a streak of winning a number of Super Bowls in a row. A player I have always loved and respected but unfortunately on the opposite end (Raiders fan and proud of it here) John Elway to me will always be one of the ultimate guys in the sport. As a football fan, Im glad he had his great moments. He went through the ups and the downs. Congrats to him!!!

I so agree with you. The glory days of the Lions were when this theme song was played. And even those glory days were not that great as they could never win a playoff game and thus no Super Bowl. But they were light years ahead of what we have now. We used to be respectable. The last two times the Lions played in a game televised by NBC, they were victorious beating the Colts 32-10 and the Jets 13-10 and this great theme music was used.

This is around the time I first got into the NFL really. I was only 11 at the time of Denver's first Super Bowl win but I remember staying up late for so many games during the 1997 season (I'm from the UK), and this theme just reminds of them great times for the Broncos. They will come again, no matter what happens in one season nobody can ever rule Denver out the next, and that's what I love about them. There will come a time when we are the top dog in the West again!

This is so nostalgic. I heart this song! My fondest memory of this theme song is when I was 10 and/or 11 yrs. old. It was the Steelers vs. Colts. in the AFC Final... when the Steelers won after Jim Harbaugh's pass rolled off his receiver's chest and fell... incomplete. GO STEELERS!

Craizest part of that is the guy who dropped that pass in the AFC Championship, Aaron Bailey, played in NBC's final season with the AFC (1997 Colts), "final" (only) year broadcasting the XFL (Chicago Enforcers) and final year broadcasting the Arena League (2006 with the Grand Rapids Rampage)

NBC is using something very, very similar for the Olympics this year. It's not quite the same theme, but it's in the key of D and has the same chord progression. The Olympics are not as cool as Elway dueling against Jim Kelly or Marino airing it out against Harbaugh, but it definitely brought back some memories...

Indeed he was; personally, I think that when Enberg joined CBS Sports in 2000, they should have made him and Dan Dierdorf the #1 broadcasting team for CBS' NFL coverage as well and knocked Greg Gumbel and Phil Simms back to the #2 team. Better yet, I think that when CBS brought on Enberg, they also should have lured Paul Maguire over from ESPN and reunited him with Enberg and Simms to be CBS' #1 NFL broadcasting team and put Dan Dierdorf in with Greg Gumbel as the #2 team.

John Williams composed the current NFL on NBC theme, so it makes perfect sense to relate this to Star Wars.

probably. i just grew up in the 80's when oj was on the sidelines in some freezing hell, like greenbay, shivering.

This was never one of my favorite NBC sports themes, but I always felt like I should be ice skating or walking to the 18th hole at Pebble Beach each time I heard this theme song

@DTownBBall07 Oh Yeah, I was so happy about the Sugar Bowl win. Brady Hoke did a great job with Michigan football turning them around after the mess Rich Rod left. And the future is so bright with Hoke and a great staff at the helm!! I am finally excited about Michigan football again!! And I sue do miss the 1995-97 NFL on NBC theme. It was a great one and wish NBC would use it for some sports telecast.

This theme is such music to my ears. Brings back so many great memories even more so now than ever. The same time this theme was used by NBC for their NFL coverage was also the last time Michigan football and basketball were actually both good at the same time. Oh how times have changed for the worse. As a Michigan fan now, it couldn't be worse. Seeing hated MSU go to yet another Final Four while Michigan is bad in both football and basketball makes me sick to my stomach.

@Wolverine607 The 1996 season was the first year I got into the Broncos. We didn't get so much exposure to the NFL in the UK back then but I just loved watching Elway, TD, Atwater, Romo, Crockett, and although only a kicker Elam was just the king. It was hard to see that Jacksonville loss, huge upset, but they looked so cool in navy blue. The second Super Bowl winning season in 1998 was just amazing to watch, I haven't seen that many totally dominant teams in a season since except the 18-1 Pats.

Polskaman, Wolverine, I gotta respect you guys. True fans, willing to stick with your team through good and very, very, very awful. I feel for you guys, I really do. The Lions are the one team I sort of like in the NFC North. The one team I LOVE is the Bears, so we also know about trying times. But I always respect true fans.

If that Ravens-Steelers game had aired on Sunday afternoon like it was originally re-scheduled to, NBC would've had a really cheeky sense of humor to break this theme out. Oh well.

What a great piece. "The AFC (AFL) on NBC". Too bad Rupert Murdoch and Fox had to show up and screw things up. Now they have golf, too. Ugh.

+Matthew Behrman When FOX flat out stole the NFC from CBS, I knew things would never be the same. When NBC lost the NBA to ABC well ESPN I knew that the NBA wouldn't be as great and it hasn't. The NBA on ABC is horrible.

Yes, historically, this is correct. The old AFL was on NBC in the ‘60s, while CBS broadcasted the NFL as long as 📺 has been around. Super Bowl I was on both networks. At the 1970 merger, all old AFL teams joined the AFC, and the TV contract stayed with NBC until the 1997 season. Baseball had a similar setup: the AL played on ABC, the NL played on NBC, both leagues alternated World Series home field advantage annually, with the AL during odd-#’d years, airing on ABC, and the NL during even #’d years, airing on NBC.

@Wolverine607 no, it was probably when I watched the first broadcast. i think they were running promos before the first game that used the theme from pirates of the caribbean.
