RIP Jim Fassel. An underrated coach with some solid teams

The Cowboys miss the playoffs for the first time since 1990.

The Giants had a pretty good turnaround in 1997. After missing the playoffs 3 years in a row, including a 6-10 season in 1996, New York Giants reverse their fortunes and unexpectedly finished 10-5-1, heading back to the playoffs... until Minnesota beat them.

This was one of the more fun seasons as a Giants fan, what with it being the first time they made the playoffs after Simms & L.T. retired. That while they were understandably predicted to be yet another doormat team going into it, with not a whole lot of talent to work with. That baffling first round playoff loss to Minnesota really stung though, and while would have been tough for them to win the following week, would have liked to see how their monster defense would have done against Brett Favre and the Packers in Round #2, if they didn't choose to collapse at the worst possible time also.

And the REAL problem was and still is to this day? See 1:39 mark for your answer.

Yep.

Yeah, and no doubt the Boys mid 90's dynasty would have still been going strong for at least most of the rest of the decade, had if he not gotten in the way of it too. Switzer obviously wasn't the answer, and was just along for the ride when that core scraped up their last Super Bowl title in the 95 season also.

Jason Sehorn was married to Dallas's own actress Angie Harmon (who's a big Cowboys fan).

It was remarkable how everything went downhill for Dallas in ‘97 beginning with the trip to Lambeau

No it started before that. Try week 2's Sunday night meltdown in the Desert. Actually it began in 1996 after a SB hangover gone bad & not fixed.

1997 WAS bad. 2010, 2015, and 2020. (considering there was high optimism) also rank down there with the worst

Makes me sad looking at Sehorn in this clip. If only Fassel hadn't ruined him by putting him on kickoffs

Sehorn is still my all time favorite, but he asked to do the return, I agree Fassel should have told him no, though
@freakyfornash
@freakyfornash 2 года назад
Before that game, Sehorn was a freak of nature, who looked like he was going to re-define the cornerback position. Before there was Revis Island, there was "Sehorn Island" too! You could tell the 98 Giants squad, who had somewhat high expectations going into the season after their surprise success in 97 never recovered from that, and would no doubt have been a ten win or so playoff team that year, if not for his devastating injury.
@s.tavares3257

@@freakyfornash never heard of “Sehorn island.” But I do remember him getting burned all the time in the 00’s.

@@s.tavares3257 Yeah I know, which was after his devastating injury, which ruined his athletic ability. He did show some flashes of it from time to time, but was never quite the same force he was before that happened though.

@freakyfornash

It died before this after their second round playoff loss to the Panthers in the 96 season, and never came to be again either! While they did manage to have some decent bounce back years when they made the postseason (while winning a division title to go with it) under Chan Gailey in 98, and 99 respectively, they were clearly not the same dominant franchise they were in the mid 90's, when Jimmy Johnson rebuilt the Boys into a powerhouse. That of which Switzer just simply was on the ride for when that core was able to scrape up one last Super Bowl title during the 95 season too.

@zacharyfrank4723 8 месяцев назад
It was on life support in 96, they needed a late season run to make the playoffs, it was pretty much over after the loss to the panthers in the playoffs
@walterlv01

This game was an embarrassment to the Cowboys' franchise - playing in front of a half-empty stadium, the crowd that was there was booing, the team gave no effort at all (some people think it was to sabotage Switzer) and Jerry Jones down on the sideline the whole second half trying to motivate players who had already checked out.
@freakyfornash
@freakyfornash 2 года назад
Yeah, and since when was it the owner's job to go onto the field, to give his players pep talks, when that's strictly something coaches, and ONLY coaches should do too!? (L.O.L.!)

The next Christmas Bedtime tale we heads to Dallas and its a sad one as the Giants and downhill Cowboys as it is the season finale Soap opera of DALLAS in early action on FOX/Sunday Ticket is: 🎶🎶🎄 " Silent Night......Goodbye Dynasty 🎶🎄😁😁🏈. Once upon a time, There was great coach named Tom Landry who took over the Cowboys as an expansion team in 1960, guided them two Super Bowls in the 70's with the " Doomsday Defense" of Randy White, Ed " Too Tall" Jones and the leadership of Roger Stabauch. Then a evilseedoer of Jerry Jones, an Arkansas good ol boy and Hall of Famer, fired Tom Landry in 1989 and hired Jimmy Johnson who came off of winning the National Championship with the Miami Hurricanes football team, and drafted Troy Aikman and Jimmy had a 10 year contact with Dallas and turned a 1989 dead end 1-15 team into a superior dynasty in 1992 and 1993 with full of discpline, fear and hard working through Jimmy's teachings....then after Super Bowl 28 ,Jimmy resigned as Jerry's loud mouth wanted to speak for the players and other decsions, then hired in 1994 Barry Switzer and all started to go down hill with off field issues by players with Erik Williams car accident in 1994, Barry's non discpline factor, and Aikman and Switzer butting heads as we approach the sweet Christmas hoilday, nothing was sweet as Deion Sanders was playing Bobby Boucher Waterboy duties with bruised ribs , and getting sacked 4 times by the dangerous defense of the G-Men who looking for blessings again by Santa once more as thier looking to sweep the Boys for the 1st time since 1990, same year Dallas missed the playoffs and it was a funeral on this somber day filled with boos, frustration and Irvin shedding tears as the Giants offense put a hurt on Dallas in the 1st half scoring 20 points alone and Aikman left, Former Head coach of Dallas, QB Jason Garrett felt the wrath of the Giants defense as a Emmitt Smith touchdown breaking the shutout, all good things offically come to an end and so does the brotherhood of " The Great Wall of Dallas " as Irvin consoles Billy Bates in his final game and so is Darryl Johnston ,Herschel Walker,Anthony Miller , and Mark Tunei and Aikman and the children shed tears of sadness as Barry Switzer is also out of the picture as he resigns from coaching and Irvin saying " We Need A Change" 😔😔🏈 as deep down they all missed Jimmy Johnson espically for Troy who was crying in the Bengals game, as for the Giants with Tyrone Wheatley doing a " Mary Poppins" impression , they clean sweep Dallas off thier feet the 1st time in 7 years, but the Giants in the playoffs once again will host a Wild Card game next Saturday and Santa Hourglass is ticking fast on the head turning turnaround of the Giants would strike midnight more ways than one. The End 🎄😁 ( Pat Summerall John Madden and Mike Doocy on the call on this game 1:00 🎁🎄😁 HO! HO! HO! ) . Epilogue: Giants RB Rodney Hampton scored his 49 rushing TD - Giants Team Record. But on a bright note, Dallas Nate Newton,Deion Sanders, Darren Woodson, Larry Allen got blessings from Santa in a dark " Green Mile" season for Dallas to Honolulu for the 1998 Pro Bowl 🎁🎄.

I'm almost certain that if Jerry didn't screw it up wit Jimmy Johnson, they would've been New England before New England, they haven't made it to the NFC championship game since 1995, that tells you who's responsible lol
