1st-Ever FDA-Approved Longevity Drug? [2023]

BREAKING NEWS: For the first time in history, the US Food & Drug Administration has given conditional approval for a drug that was developed, not to treat a specific, FDA-approved disease, but to “extend lifespans.”
This is huge! Does it mark a shift in how the FDA looks at life-extending drugs? Does it mean that time when the FDA recognizes “aging” as a disease, one that can be treated and possibly cured, is drawing closer?
Does anyone else think this is as big as I do?

There is a rare genetic disease called progeria which causes children to age ultra-rapidly, so by the time they are ten they have the physique of a 90-year-old. Regardless of whether this drug works for ordinary people, it must surely be worth trying in progeria cases.

I didnt "think" this when I read about it, I "knew" it. Its a no brainer. Dog lives 12 years and now you can add another year. Not a big deal but if they can go as far as adding 4 years. Well then people will buy it for their dog. If it works on the dog then what could it do for us? Add an additional 40% to our life span? Take that times 73 and you have an additional 28 years. Now the average life span is 100 years. People can and will work till they are 75 or 80 and wait to collect social security. That means a work force that works way longer, saves more in retirement, pays their debts off and doesnt need to collect social security until they are 75. What is there not to see here? This benefits the rich big time. Larger work force, less drain on the budget and more money being dumped into the stock market! Of course major companies like Walmart would love this.

So, here's the thing, Josh. I'm not a big fan of David Sinclair. I spent a few days with him while in Costa Rica for stem cell therapy (he was down there getting stem cell therapy at the same time.) I found him to be arrogant, self-centered, demanding, controlling, and very high-maintenance. His track record with first resveratrol and then with NMN has left a bad taste in my mouth. So, no. I won't be doing a video about David Sinclair. Sorry.

FDA is afraid to approve all but the best most funded drugs because nothing happens to them if they deny approval of a drug, but if they approve drugs they are putting their jobs on the line if they approve a drug and it later is determined to be detrimental, since we have to have fall guys and it ends up being the FDA personnel instead of the drug company ( often). So it is a broken system. No approval is safer than approving many worthwhile but questionable drugs.

Maybe - and maybe not. Most dog breeds are hundreds of years old, rather than hundreds of thousands of years old like humans. Many are based on random mutations that have life-shortening effects, like pugs that have breathing problems. It seems possible that drugs could be developed to address certain specific issues in large dogs that have absolutely nothing to do with human physiology. So, the BIG question is: How do these drugs work?
@franklanham6936
@franklanham6936 7 месяцев назад
I think Lance has a valid point - this could be a turning point for the FDA. A possible problem might be that Health Insurance companies will probably not want to ensure for a condition that everyone gets if they are lucky - old age.
@LanceHitchings
@LanceHitchings 7 месяцев назад
But here's the thing. The amount of money that insurance companies spend on treating age-related chronic disease far outstrips what they might spend on simply maintain good health. They would save so much money!

I absolutely stand by what I said. Longevity research hasn't, until now, been considered "de-risked." Longevity companies don't have a proven track record at developing AND commercializing drugs. So, while there are investors, the big money is staying away. But if the FDA recognized that "extending lifespans" is a legitimate goal for drug development and that success is "likely," then this might be the signal that investors need to start moving big money into longevity research. And in biotech, success is correlated with capital investment. With FDA approval, we should start seeing funding and grants being steered towards longevity. And if we do...THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING.
@galladiel
@galladiel 7 месяцев назад
It's naive to think that what holds FDA back is the assumption that longevity drugs are unlikely to succeed. If there were drugs that could help extend lifespans, they would do anything in their power to stop their development. This agency is deeply corrupt.

I follow anti-aging and use various drugs to counter same. Can absolutely tell you an injectable is coming that will reduce your age by 1/2. In fact I’m learning how to do the chemistry’s (which anyone who has the will to learn can do) so I don’t have to wait on the FDA to approve my personal use. Watch the news in 2024. You’ll start hearing about it.

Aging, like pregnancy, is not a disease. They are normal parts of life. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try and improve on those conditions with science. The problem isn’t not considering these disease, the problem is the FDA’s stupid requirement that something be considered a disease in order to approve trying to fix it or make it better.

@tridoc99
@tridoc99 7 месяцев назад
@@viracocha2021 No. What does the D in CVD stand for? Cancer cells are not normal cells as there has been a mutation in their DNA, and infections are also by definition a disease. That is why the CDC operates the Center for Infectious DISEASE. Are you seriously trying to equate these things with the natural process by which humans (and many other animals) propagate the species and the process which all living things undergo?
@SamShank175
@SamShank175 7 месяцев назад
I think it's interesting and that there could be benefits to aging being considered a disease. I have a couple of issues though. 1. I heard about the drugs to extend the lives of dogs earlier this week, my first thought was that this company found a new way to prey on people's love for their dogs. I couldn't help but think that they started on this mission not because of their own love of dogs, but because they were looking for a money maker. 2. The other is your use of the word 'cure', has a drug ever cured anything? They usually just treat symptoms. The exception might be antibiotics, but they've also left a lot of destruction in their wake.
@LanceHitchings
@LanceHitchings 7 месяцев назад
Wow, cynic? I've read & watched several interviews with Celine Halioua, the Founder and CEO of Loyal, and I would hazard a guess that making money is a very low priority for her. They're working to keep the cost of the drug in the low to mid double digits. And yes, drugs have cured lots of things. I used to have Hep C and now I'm cured, thanks to drugs developed by Big Pharma.

You may be right, but we can hope. I think that what made this trial viable is the fact the giant & large breed dogs only live about 10 years, at the most. Humans can live to 110 or more. Even if they start a trial when they're older (like with the dogs) it'll still take 50 years or so to complete the trial.

It seems likely that the primary beneficiary of this recent decision will be to further expand the scope and the power of the FDA. What appears to have happened over the last 4 billion years is the rate of evolution has overall accelerated quite a bit. For this evolutionary process to continue ramping up not only requires that you and I will die, but that virtually every extent speicies must also perish. For my part I simply intend to make an increasing contribution for as long as I am able; an important part of which is to enable our children to continue to empower themselves. Perhaps the most propitious way move ahead is to obsoletes the FDA by allowing new processes and organizations to come to the fore, flourish, and then also go extinct.
@LanceHitchings
@LanceHitchings 7 месяцев назад
I couldn't agree more that the FDA needs a complete overhaul. Whether or not overall evolution is speeding up or has been happening faster that we though all along is debatable. Humans, though, are apparently evolving faster.
