@@grimreapers Im wondering what was the cheating part u were talking about, the autopilot? Or is/was something up with the fuel rate? I never play long missions, so I always had the impression the Mirage had a really bad range. I didnt count, but u were refuelling more often than the others, right? Wondering what happened to the F-14s tho, thought they would win that easily lol.

The F5 flight took four and half hours, with no altitude hold or anything... everything ached at the end of it!! I need a more comfortable seat! And we only refueled once :)

Cap, you really need a story director, a person who is dedicated to record all the action scenes and then post it on YT GR channel. you obiviously like to fly very much with the boys, but for a spectator it is sometimes tedious to only see 1 plane action for majority of time, the more since there is such a great group of pilots in each story. it would boast the cinematic level of your YT story telling much more.

The F-18's may not have been fast, but did the entire trip with only 1 refuel at Lavan. The F5's handflew the entire trip, muchos respect!

It seems It's one of the features of the F18. Spoke to a pilot in a museum about it. And while not efficient It's definitely something they know and do in emergencies.

FANTASTIC! This and the 1100+ mile cold war mission you did ages ago are my favourites. I know they're a bit of a drag to do, but the endurance formation and refuelling missions are tense and riveting. These and the two-man Tomcat missions are just epic.

I had surgery yesterday afternoon. I woke up hungry and thirsty about 3am. I needed entertainment and wanted something that wasn't over in no time. This has proven perfect. I still think that you're crazy for flying for so long but I guess reclaiming the record makes it so worthwhile. I can't believe the Mirage did so well. It looks like a toy compared to the Tomcat. Thanks for keeping me company until I finally dozed off again.

@@grimreapers Thanks. Up to four weeks of healing ahead. Not allowed to have rude thoughts for 4 weeks either. Then there's learning to pee in a straight line again. Thankfully I have plenty of morphine for my other health issues so I won't be feeling much lol.

You should try to carry out Operation Black Buck then. The Vulcan Bomber from Ascension to Port Stanley, Falklands. With 7 refuels and 1 on the return leg, it was and some 7,800 miles round trip. Can add SAMS at Port Stanley and perhaps A4 Skyhawks, Mirage III and Super Etendard. You'll never get that record ever taken from you :)

It might a little extreme to do a full a SR-71 36 hour flight where you eat MREs and pee your pants to relieve yourself. I think some gamers do that anyway.

I'm a newbie to DCS, a spectator for now, watch and learn. I'm certified for single-engine/light-jet (Cirrus Vision, my daughters' PJ, love it, want an F-8). An ANG/veteran of OJC/Panama attached then to 160th SOAR/Night-Stalkers. Really love the creative missions, the "what ifs" are great. I do come for the missions but stays for the irreverent comedy, comradarie and pithy commentary. Grim Reapers, are an irregular Monty Python's ACTUAL Flying Circus, speaking of the MPFC, it's all about "Capt's" wonderful speaking voice, his creative explicative-deleteds substitutions and acronym-filled color pre-mission briefings and post-mission de-briefings. Above all, Capt ALWAYS mentions the "War" whenever the Germans are present, "big stoopid planes!"...Tally-Ho boys!

Somewhere I read that the F-14s could be detected at very large distance. One reason seems to be that the compressor blades are visible in these older designs. Modern aircraft have these curved ducts which make it more difficult for radars.

just wait until the A-6 intruder gets added: 4 bags + weapons = 2400NM combat range without refueling the A-6 can do this mission nonstop without taking fuel or load bombs at a stop short before the target, while cruising at around 415kn in a HI-LO-LO profile it could go further and faster when it does HI-HI-HI we in the A-6 group already make plans to beat your mission ;)

I don't know if you intended for the wrecked aircraft tinkering to demonstrate some kind of postmodern ponderance of the futility of military and the stronger you are the stronger you are not. The weaker you get particularly with the respect to military. But i mean amazing amazing amazing. A +++ AAA + i was in Absolute tears. I still shake now when i think of it.

Regarding the repair bug, something that I noticed was that the interface was saying "Repair started" followed by you immediately going into engine starting procedures... is it possible that you were short-circuiting the repair process?

Wasn’t bugged to my knowledge. Looking at it when his gears first dropped its because he hit the emergency gear drop lever. After he landed he should have made sure that the lever was back in its original position (Vertical). The repair was for the over speed that originally happened and was completed before he started engine.

Weapon load on the Strike Eagle is enormous and it would have more range than the Mirage but not as much as I thought having just looked up the figures. I'd love to see an F-111 module though - it would be perfect for a mission like this and it has the advantage of an internal bomb bay for low drag on the final approach after ditching the bags. Of course the ultimate plane for high speed, high altitude bombing missions would be the B-70 Valkyrie with its Mach 3+ capability and >70,000ft cruising altitude but I doubt it would ever be available.

@@trolleriffic MiG-31 with full fuel, and 8 laser guided bombs at around 60% throttle will get you VERY far. The MiG-31 with 60% throttle and that loadout can cruise at around mach 1 and still go quite far. If you want extra range, you can travel at around 40% throttle and cruise at around at 0.7 mach. ED plz gib MiG-31BSM module plz.

@@Etha-xi8ei I forgot about the -31. I always think of it as the last of the pure interceptors (which it is) and forgot that it can carry air to ground ordnance. Obviously it was designed to patrol huge areas of the Soviet Union but I was surprised to see just how far it can fly although the range takes a massive hit if you want to take advantage of its Mach 2.35 cruising speed. Interestingly enough the MiG-25 has over 2.5 times the range of the -31 at that speed (over 1000 miles), probably because its turbojets are a much better choice for high speed cruise efficiency (see Concorde with its Olympus turbojets vs the Tu-144 which was initially fitted with turbofans) because of the lower drag from their smaller frontal area.

@@trolleriffic Concorde's advantage over the Tu-144 was that it supercruised (Because of the wing shape reducing drag sufficiently - the curvy leading edge) so it didn't need to use the afterburner even in crusie at Mach 2, which gave it its endurance - I still find this an amazing achievement of engineering even now. The Olympus was an amazing engine too - at one point it was powering Concorde, the RAF's Vulcans and most of the Royal Navy!

@@tomriley5790 Concorde's ogival delta wing shape was (from what I've read) more about lowering the stall speed and improving control than about making it more efficient during cruise. The Tu-144 had a much simpler double delta which was fine during cruise but resulted in a much higher landing speed that Tupolev attempted to overcome by adding deployable canards just behind the cockpit. A huge amount of work went into getting the most out of the engines through the use of variable geometry intake ramps and nozzles, together with a sophisticated computer control system - the entire system was the absolute state of the art at the time. The Olympus was chosen because of availability and performance but also because the designers wanted a turbojet for its lower drag. The Tu-144 ended up having its turbofan engines replaced with turbojets (possibly non-afterburning but sources vary on that question) and achieved considerably longer range and slightly higher cruising speeds as a result.
