If I keep watching this stuff I'll eventually end up knowing more about deer than I do my wife, and she's constantly telling me about herself!

Not my dad. He took me hunting right along with my brother. He gave me a double barrel 12 gauge that turned me a flip when I fired it and he dared me to cry about it. First time I saw a doe shot and flopping around on the ground I started crying. He told me that if I was gonna be a cry baby I needed to stay home. Mean daddy? Maybe. But today I am so thankful and I hunt everyday of the season that I can and spend the rest of the year preparing for the next season with my husband and family. I miss him so much.

I’ve got a neighbor of a secluded area I hunt where it’s mainly thick hardwood regeneration but my neighbor has mainly food plots without large amounts of cover so large percentage of the does will bed there and a matriarch group will bed on the area I hunt but most of the mature bucks are bedding around me where the regeneration and cover is.

It would be great to hear some information about the suns path and how that relates to terrain, building food plots, how it might play into hinge cutting/direction you drop the trees to help move deer.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 3 месяца назад
The only thing the sun has anything to do with, is getting enough sun to grow what you are trying to grow 😉 huge cuts, need sunlight for example. It doesn't matter what way you cut them...they need sunlight. There are no set rules, other than whatever you grow needs sunlight.
@user-yi7qf2to1f
@user-yi7qf2to1f 3 месяца назад
Thank you for that info. If you had a ridge that ran west to east and you wanted to put a plot on one side, would a factor be the south facing ridge because it gets more light and gets bigger thermal pull, or that doesn't matter so much?

I love your videos and watch all of them! You always say apples can not be a food source year round. What about layering apple drop times. Starting with tree dropping in early September all the way into late December using the different varieties of tree? I own completely wooded acres, and opening a food plot is out of the budget, but i can chainsaw and open sunlight to grow apple trees.
@grantgemlo7348
@grantgemlo7348 3 месяца назад
We open the timbered forest on the 40 acres in northern Minnesota with chainsaws only and create food plots for cheap. Not out of the budget.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 3 месяца назад
Hi Luke! You would need an acre of apple trees + and 10 years to grow and establish after fencing and taking care of...and you would still lack the season long consistency. Also, you would have to clear that area no different than an acre food plot. Just a LOT more resources of time, maintenance and money overall with just about an equal amount of time and money or effort to clear, for less certain results.

Jeff, last year the two biggest/ mature deer were harvested. The next two would most likely be better to wait another year before targeting. Is it common to have a brand new mature deer to move in on to the property that we were not aware of?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 3 месяца назад
It isn't too common, but when you create holes it can happen! What we see here are that we collect an unfair share of 2 and 3 year olds. They stay and then that gives us an unfair # of 4 year old + bucks in the mix. I always say to target something...there always ends being something you want to shoot 😊

I was thinking of planting summer beans and doing the same process in the fall that you would do with buckwheat. Would this work? I am trying to make my bigger plot area to have more does so my hidden plots will hold more bucks

To promote the regeneration of the Aspen are you taking the mature trees off the stump, or hinge cutting?
@MyVisualRomance
@MyVisualRomance 3 месяца назад
@@tilerknigh1992We did the same here in south MS years ago and yes, it helps a lot. Also consider planting sawtooth oaks (attracts turkey as well), pears and crabapple and blueberry. If you turn your place into a free buffet mecca and your neighbors don’t, guess where they gonna come to? Just keep in mind with all these deer expert videos that most are northern centric and what works up there doesn’t always down south. Our green vegetation is nearly year round, theirs aint. Also, you won’t find a lot of aspen trees in the deep south. They need elevation. So you gotta grow what the southern deer like and don’t get much of.

You mention apple trees and I'm wondering if there is a case to have a deer orchard rather than traditional food plot. I'm thinking a variety of apple and pear trees with different drop times and still some clover or rye underneath. Here in central WI and poor soils that seems like lower maintenance option in the long run....
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 3 месяца назад
You would still miss portions of the season...still have to maintain the orchard, fence when young and potentially fertilize. With the overall amount of work needed to establish I'm not sure there is less work or cost? Possible but takes years to establish. Maybe 10+ for something to be consistent and allow you to take advantage of. Where a food plot would be the current planting season.

Have you ever attempted Wapato seedings in wetland areas as a food source to supplement browse?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 3 месяца назад
I have not. They can be great in new, drained and ready to plant, ore-water locations...typically man made. However to seed into wet areas with anything is typically highly futile because the existing growth is too consuming. You have to be very careful careful attempting to change wetlands...in many ways
@davidimig3292
@davidimig3292 3 месяца назад
Hey Mitchell I planted Wapato 10 years ago in a 2 acre wetlands area for duck purposes. I hunt in NE Wisconsin. I’d say the deer eat the Wapato more than the ducks. The Wapato will explode once established. I’d say it’s a great browse source. Do I sense the deer come from miles to eat it? No, but I get plenty of deer cam pictures with deer knee deep in mud. The browse on plants is obvious. The nice thing is it comes back year after year. It will take over your wetlands from mud flats to a couple inches deep in water. So be prepared.

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 3 месяца назад
Both are great...depends on if you need shrubs or trees tho. Both have to be caged. Aspen are easier to establish, typically

Whats your thoughts on having a section clear cut , debris removed and stumps flush cut so every couple years it can be brush hogged to start the regen over?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 3 месяца назад
Hi Tyler! It really depends on the habitat and type of timber. That's how they cut Aspen, for example and then you can forestry mulch for regen on a rotational basis every several years. The size of your rotational cuttings is based on the size of the area you are cutting. For hardwood species that would be a bad thing unless very large in size of area, only because once deer eat the regen down more than 50% 2 years in a row the kill it. Aspen is more resilient and abundant so smaller areas can withstand heavy browsing pressure. Box elder, for example...should also be hinge cut, not clear cut. Just depends...
@tylermueller946

Ok sounds good the areas im thinking have aspen / quaking aspen and paper birch . Alot of them border the bedding im putting in and it would be nice to have some clear cuts i can maintain and keep going
