How does a fish with no Teeth fight?!
Panda Garra Savagely Sparing For Dominance! ? Are They Myanmar's Fighting Fish? Garra Flavatra. Breeding Panda Garra, fishkeeping of a newly discovered species. This happy addition to any aquarium is nearly always peaceful, so I was shocked to see the rare behavior of two (what I believe to be Males) Battling and fighting over dominance. These algae eaters love planted tanks, biofilm and sucking on your hand while you work in the aquarium. They are similar to the small carp used in Chinese fish foot cleaning- as far as behavior, however are not the same species, as many viewers have inquired.
how do panda garras spar?
how do panda garras mate?
why do panda garras fight
similarities to panda Garras and corydoras catfish in breeding and sparing.

Thank you, this looks more like establishing pecking alpha order... and if you remove them, they will just reestablish if they meet again... mine have already gone through it and now just stay busy eating algae, laying a bout and chasing the occasional nosy tetra

It’s worth noting that when they’re going at it with each other, you can tell if they’re being genuinely aggressive or not by the color they turn. If they’re being aggressive, they’ll start to lose their black coloring and be mostly the pale yellow. The more aggressive, the more yellow they have.

2 males fighting for dominance over the 3 females in the tank...the other 2 males just knew they were gonna lose and didnt bother... it's funny, one is definitely on sitting on the highest stone perch all day today...perhaps thats the alpha male's spot?

Territorial for sure. I had one in my tank but then introduced a second garra and they immediately went at it just like this for a favored spot under a piece of wood. The original garra lightened color immediately, I'm assuming a threat to the new fish. Within about 15 minutes, it stopped.

I've kept 6 panda garra for over 3 years now and they seem to enjoy beating the cheese out of each other. Sometimes it's a king of rock thing and other times they argue over food. But they don't seem to need a reason to wrestle pretty rough. Having 6 helps spread the roughness around so that no one fish gets too beat up. Lots of objects to hide in and break up line of sight helps too. Most of the time they coexist just fine. They are quite an active and entertaining fish. No babies yet. You can find them for $4 each now online.

we also have one garra and after day two it got stuck in a repetitive circling and glass surfing mode for hours. so we bought a second one and they got along pretty well. immediately the glass surfing has ever since stopped but after a few days the new garra inhabited the most prominent cave and is fierce-fully attacking and chasing the old garra out of the cave whenever it gets in its vicinity. the old one doesnt seem to bother too much about that, nor does it reply the vicious attacks. outside the cave they get along pretty well. we plan on constructing a new cave for the old garra at the other end of the tank.

Yeah, its males usually establishing which fish will be the dominant one...they should do it once or twice, or if one dies etc. And the dynamics change
@Korvmannen

@Fishtory
@Fishtory Год назад
@Korvmannen both moves could work. But often times fish need 5, 6 or 7 individuals for them to behave somewhat naturally. Some species will sit in a corner and barely move or eat if theyre lonely...others jump out of tanks, or start killing other fish. Its very interesting and more of an art than a science

Wow...I have 3 panda garras on order. 2 for my 55g and 1 for my 15g. Ideal conditions in both tanks for them with heavy flow, well oxygenated, mixture of stones/gravel/granite, but I've been assured a 55g is big enough to avoid aggression, so this is concerning. I do have a back up plan in case the of the worst, so that's not a problem

Interesting I came across this video Alexander. I am strongly considering getting some Panda Garra for my tanks, but after seeing this I think one per tank would be enough, except for the 30 gal tank, that one would need at least two more. Now I am thinking of going back to algae eaters AND some pigmy cory's just to keep it safe.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 3 года назад
Well to be fair, they did this for a week, and it's been over 2 years now...and I've never seen them do this again, or seen injuries from fighting. They definitely seem to like being in a group of 4 or 5+ , but some males also seem fine being alone as well

I absolutely love panda garras! However when i asked for some at my LFS the person was adamant that they were very aggressive towards other fish especially other bottom dwellers, she called them as bad as flying foxes and said most people returned them! Is this something you have had problems with? Ive only been in this hobby for a year or so, so i am conflicted on what to think.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 года назад
They only fight one anothe for pecking order as young males...but they can be really mean for a day or two...they leave other fish out of it and once it's sorted, 99% of the time, it never happens again. But it is alarming...and pet stores only see new batches coming in over and over...always establishing that dominance thing each time the tanks are restocked....so I can see why they would think they are mean.
@giftofthewild6665

They might be aggressive towards bottom dwellers that get too close to "their" territory, but they probably don't care much about mid water fish.

You should intervene when fighting. If you believe in letting nature take its course, they shouldn't be in a tank. When they start to damage each other one needs to come out - responsible fish keeping.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 года назад
Definitely when they damage each other, i step in...but these guys dont really bite, they "arm wrestle" their whole body and once they did it for a few days- it never occurred again. Just a dominance thing, i suppose
@madturtle8826
@madturtle8826 3 года назад
They hardly look like they are hurting each other. They were doing what they do in nature and either one could have stopped and swam away but they didn’t. It’s different if you have a fish actively hunting down and attacking/killing other fish. This was far from it. I also love when people act like keeping fish in an aquarium is so “un-nature” like . Some of these fish live their lives in small puddles in the wild or spend their lives in an area not much bigger then a 55 gallon aquarium. . They don’t travel vast distances. They don’t migrate from ocean to river. Thanks though for reminding us on how to be a “responsible” fish keeper.
