Because it's so tricky to sense tension when you can't sense you're doing it to yourself...I find it's better to "trick myself" into moving in a way that inadvertently releases the habitual tension in order to make that strategically designed motion. This motion concerning rounding shoulders may be different for others But for me, it's moving my elbows backwards, (allowing the elbows to move my shoulders by themselves because my shoulders are attached, LOL) In fact eventually, it worked for me to merely THINK of moving my elbows toward my back! Then...I'd need to pay attention to myself very carefully what happened next. Now that I've "reset" my shoulders to "unround," I need to play close attention to when and why I seem to want to pull them forward when I move my hand(s) forward. That's where the practice of interrupting using a habitual remedy works well. In fact your secret of "directing" while moving in the opposite way works really well in this situation - thanks! Turns out that rounding my shoulders was causing the base of my thumbs to hurt - and changing what I was doing to my shoulders made this thumb pain disappear. Pain disappearing is Gooood!

Haha! yes, pain disappearing is definitely good! You're absolutely correct in the idea that 'tricking' yourself is sometimes necessary to work out how to prevent a habit from activating. Finding different words, images or movement patterns that help people discover the ability to break free of their habitual movements is a huge part of my job and what works for one person doesn't for the next. Keeps life interesting!

You say I send a 'direction' to my shoulders to "not round". Am I really sending a directive to my chest to "stay open" ?
@MovementandPosture
@MovementandPosture 5 месяцев назад
Hi, A good question. The important thing is to realise that if your shoulders tend to pull forward then some unconscious habit in your mind is 'directing' them to do that. Of course, the rounded shoulders are simply one part of a general tendency to over shorten the muscles in the front of the body. This can include the chest muscles, the SCM muscles coming from the head to the chest, the abdominals etc etc. When Alexander Technique teachers talk about directing, the idea is that we are sending a very clear, conscious message to our body in order to replace the existing habitual one. When working with a student, it is often necessary to get them to try a few different 'directions' before they find the one that is most effective for them at that point. For example, I was working with an opera singer today who was only able to release her shoulder tension when she stopped stiffening her ankles. So, I guess explore which thoughts and ideas work best for you to achieve the goal of stopping the habitual reaction which causes the pulling forwards and restores the natural balance of tone in the body. Hope that makes sense!

Hey Pete, you often say "lengthening and widening" in your videos when talking about the ideal position for your shoulders. What do you mean by this? What part is lengthening and what part is widening and is it the same thing?
@MovementandPosture
@MovementandPosture 2 года назад
I use the terms 'lengthening and widening' fairly interchangeably with the term 'expanding' and 'not compressing' as they all refer to the idea that when we aren't tightening ourselves up, our body tends towards expansion. In terms of the shoulders, you could think of the lengthening being a direction of the shoulders expanding from the sternum, out along the collar bones (clavicles) and out through the shoulder joint. This is to prevent the shoulder joint from being compressed into towards the body. It's also easy to understand this lengthening carrying on down through the arm, wrist and hand joints and into the finger tips. The widening of the shoulders could also be a helpful thought about the shoulder joints not being pulled in towards the body or held in a forwards position. But the idea of widening can also be taken as a a reminder to allow space in the upper chest and across the shoulder joint. I think in the end, it's better to have a sense of a 3 dimensional expansion in the body but thinking in specific directions can be easier at the start. Hope that makes sense!
