20 Minute Breathing Meditation for Grounding, Focus and Concentration

This is a guided breathing meditation to help you overcome distractions by getting grounded in your body as well as strengthen your focus and concentration. With regular practice meditation can help you to train your brain to become less distractible in the rest of your life too.
The meditation is 20 minutes long. The first 15 minutes is guided and then there’s 5 minutes alone for you to build your focus ‘muscle’ by returning to your breath whenever your mind wanders.
If you find it difficult to stay with your breath (don’t worry you’re definitely not alone!) - here are 3 tips for focus that might help (choose whichever appeals most to you - or try them on different days)…
1/ Count your breaths:
Count each inhale and exhale up to the count of 10…start on an inhale (count 1), exhale (count 2), inhale (3), exhale (4) and so on up to 10. If you lose count or count too far return to 1. This is great for training your focus. In some Buddhist traditions monks would have to master this, to develop their focus and powers of concentration before they were allowed to move on to any other form of meditation.
2/ Visualize a ball of light:
Visualize a ball of light in your belly. Imagine as long as you stay with your breath it glows bright, being charged like a battery from the breath. If you get distracted the light dims and you have to return to the ball of light to make it bright again and keep it bright. In many meditation traditions it’s believed that the breath carries subtle energy that is stored in an energy center in the belly.
3/ Use the music as an anchor:
(this will be easiest if you use headphones)
When we focus on our breath we’re using it as an ‘anchor’ for our focus. You don’t have to use your breath as the main anchor when you meditate, instead you can use another point of focus like a part of your body, a candle flame, a visualization like the ball of light above - or you can use music as the anchor for your attention. To do this, bring all of your focus to what you can hear. Whenever your mind drifts or wanders come back to the music and let your mind completely rest on the sound. Keep bringing your focus back to the music whenever your mind wanders.
Bonus tip: Relax…it will really help!
When our body is relaxed there’s a natural stillness the starts to emerge. If you try too hard to still your mind it can prevent a natural stillness emerging. Give your body and mind time to naturally settle. So be gentle with yourself and if your mind wanders, relax, it’s completely ok.
Each time you let go of a distracting thought, or pull yourself back from a mind wander by focusing on your breath - you’re strengthening neural networks and rewiring your brain for better focus.
If you meditate regularly you’ll find it easier to focus while your meditating…and the rest of the time too.

Life is so full of distractions - and the more we’re exposed to distractions - the more distractible we become. Repeated distractions actually change our brain. Stress and isolation also change the way our brain functions, making us more distractible, a side effect of the pandemic. Most breathing meditations help to strengthen your focus and this meditation is especially focused on focus! Focus is important for any type of meditation. Deep relaxation + deep focus = deep meditation. Strengthening focus can take some regular practice, but it’s well worth the time and your brain will thank you for it! It’s one of the reasons we’re happier with a consistent meditation practice. Check the description box above for extra tips to helps you strengthen your focus. It would be so wonderful if you could release more 20 minute meditations, that is the time I spend in meditation daily and I would genuinely love to have more of your work in my regular practice. You have such a safe and calming voice and I appreciate your guidance. I am a counselor and I use one of your meditations as part of the process I take people through to break out of a panic attack. You have unknowingly helped some people who really needed it at the time.

Out of all your videos, this had got to be the best one so far. I really liked the idea of spiritual mist filling up our bodies, the mist coming from life giving earth itself. I also imagined that every time I breathed, the mist unlocked a chakra. Usually this requires fully focusing on the respective part of body all by your self but knowing the mist is there to help you everytime you breathe in is really comforting. Thank you so much!

It would be a beautiful way to do the Earth Journey meditation as well (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1nPCTXAxBVo.html) which works with the elements, Sun (fire), water, air and earth. If you haven't done the meditation before I think you'd really connect with it :)

I've never experienced a better guided meditation than this! Your voice is so soothing along with your instructions, they took me all in a different world, I felt amazing to be very honest. At the end, my body felt as if I'm on a marry go round, which was so exciting. I love this! I'll practice this regularly, thank you so much, you're a wonderful teacher 💖💫

So helpful- this mediation has really helped me focus inward in a way that I’ve never been able to achieve before. My mind is constantly going, both onstage and in general- it’s so helpful to be able to now be able to fully unplug.

I noticed most of the videos are from a year ago. RU-vid algorithms brought them to my attention. I enjoyed 3 of them up to now. I also visited Caroline's website. To my pleasure I discovered that quite a few of these meditations are available on CD. I downloaded one of them (Bone deep sleep) already, so I can listen and meditate with the wifi off.

Oh my god this was beautiful! Half way through the meditation, I suddenly started seeing flashes of Blue, Purple and Green colours!It was magical!I also saw different kinds of eyes that to not pairs just one one eye of different kinds.Not so sure what it meant.Does anyone know what it could mean?

This is just amazing Meditation every time I use it I get an image of a lotus blossom fixed in my mind Is this ok or should I just fixate away from this image to the breathing only? Many thanks for all you do Caroline !

That's great Michael! Focussing on an image of a lotus blossom is a feature of quite a few Buddhist meditations. The lotus in buddhist philosophy is a symbol of awakening and there is extra symbolism associated with different colours and different parts of the body. It's great that your mind is tuning into that practice organically and I would definitely recommend staying with it :)

Caroline. When you experience deep states of meditation, do you feel a sense of detachment to your body? I just felt this during this meditation, but my mind did wander and I brought back to the breathe.

Not having militants in my house that I worked for and built would be a start! Drug addicts where more behaved than these sober politicians. The only issues with them is that stay sober and taking care of my health would be a challenge in a completely different way! When is enough enough? Using excuses such as Birthdays and gifts are ways to infiltrate others lifes? People are cruel! Grow a pair of balls and help us keep the peace! We have the answers! Why should we get sick from providing kindness? Dosen't make sence!
