Well done Kevin, I did one by not dropping the subframe, struggle and fought with ird and gear box for a day and a half, nightmare, your method was much easier due to giving yourself more room. It's not a job for the faint hearted, well done once again, good job .
What a fantastic video. I did my daughters Freelander Clutch a few years ago, and now have to do mine as slave is leaking, but watching this has given me a few tips to make doing it a little easier this time. Many thanks for going to the trouble of filming, which I think must have been as difficult as doing the clutch itself 😀👍👍👍
Wow, watched this video with great interest, thinking of getting my clutch done, I like this home service didan't think it was possible to replace a clutch on your drive, respect to this guy, don't know how much he gets paid it should be double, and i hope he gets lots of big tips from his customers.Great asset to your employer if you have one.
Kevin - jesteś wielki!, Twoja naprawa sprzęgła w Landu w polowych warunkach, spowodowała że też się za nią wziąłem i to z jakim rezultatem - udało się! Dzięki! Pozdrawiam Krzysiek.
I’m currently doing this very job on my 2005 TD4, watching the video bit by bit as I do it, got the subframe off & now going to take the x2 gear linkage bars off. Thank You for this video, it’s been a great help 🤙🏻
I have to admire this guy it takes me back to when I was doing the same thing myself many years back no fancy garages just working on the drive way or road
Watched a couple of your videos Kevin, will be removing my IRD to rebuild it today. These videos have been a Godsend not just in the 'how to' do it but also in the time saving tips in those methods. Leaving the drive shaft in etc Aso the care when replacing hardened bolts into aluminium housings with your tools. Excellent content..
I am speechless as I only thought that there was only one job laying on your back. You're a hero Kevin! Miserable conditions, no ramp, no heat, no company for encouragement or to pass a tool and videoing it to boot. WOW! And you do this every day and bankers with a W. sit in a plush office earning millions. Just no justice mate. Got to say it again-- You're a hero.
Bruce Dibben thank you for a great feedback. Yes I crack on every day. All year round. Getting ready for the winter now... Hope you’re keeping well yourself too..🍺🍺🍺🍻🍻
Really felt for you on this job outside on floor a real pain of a job but well done .clutches these days on front wheel drives are expensive and make you wanna go Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhh. Nice work there 👍
Cracking video, Cracking mechanic. Really helped me doing my clutch. Concluded that given the way you manage that lump of a Getrag box, You must like your lady's to be a more fuller type ;) Many thanks.
Glad to hear you Managed the repair successfully… That’s right Phil I like them big and plump the kind that makes you take a breath carrying her up the stairs ..😁🥵
Great video did my clutch and it and this video was very helpful had a bit of a chuckle the reg on the on that land rover has one letter different Thank once again great job.
At last someone cracking a joint with a hammer, never fails and more quicker than a complicated puller. You can trust Land Rover to design something so ridiculously difficult 😂😂😂. Decent Milwaukee fuel driver ;-) respect for working in crap conditions !
The hammer works every single time without fail. I’ve never used the puller before. I take it you’ve done a few repairs yourself. Thanks for supporting the channel. Really appreciate it. 🍻
Great video and a big high 5 to you sir could I ask a questions if you don't mind I'm currently refitting an gearbox to an 2001-51 td4 and everything is going well but can't for the life get the transfer box to go back in is their an technique to help it line up straight away or is it just a case of fighting with it? Many thanks Stay safe👍
Tim Miskin Thanks for the feedback. We do at least 4 freelancer a month. And the DMF is always the main fault that causes the cylinder to leak. Or the Clutch to slip.
Peter hutchison sorry to hear you can’t do much on cars anymore. I bet it’s something you really enjoyed doing. I will miss it very much the day I stop.
@@WMCS It was but now I have passed all my work on to my son .And I think he does very Good job .I taught him well so I'm never stuck for a mechanic although he is a Welder .Better being a master of two Trades than Master of None.
top job fair play to you in middle of doing one now video helped alot what method do you use to bleed the clutch. afterwards. prefill slave .back bleed any advice would be appreciated thanks matt
You are absolut Top! Doing this in this" hardcore way" is definitly much stronger, than working in a Car Garage! I have done this Job long Times! But you must become 100 Abo's every Day! Best regards! Frank
@@WMCS Hi,Kevin! I work as independant craftsman in interior design and Innovation since 16 years, Before i work 10 Years as Truck driver, but always when i have Time,I restore old Mercedes Cars.(30 years long) Whish you all the best! You are an Hero by doing your work!
Thanks for your video, man, and for not putting any music on it; The factory manual says not to remove the subframe, and to rest and tie the IRD on it; i just did one like this(it was a crank change, lots of work!),have another one here for crank or maybe for the whole block, don't know yet,it "broke" the turbo and ran on the engine oil till no more oil was left, the owner cleared away from it ,instead of engaging 5th gear to kill the run-away engine; and i know, IT IS SCARY!!!; Do you find it necessary,or just better, to remove the subframe, like you did?
they realy shoehorned those damn engines into that bay.my slave cylinders gone in the bell housing i replaced the one behind the clutch pedal hoping to god it was that one ,but no fluid started pouring out the bell housing area so i fear ive got to do this as its too expensive in a garage so while its split i will put another clutch plate in ,some reckon you dont have to change the mass flywheel as well ,the motors done 112,000 .i will wait for spring to start mine thanks for showing .Ant from wet wales .
Indiana Tone the slave usually fails because the flywheel centre bearing collapses. I wouldn’t risk not replacing the flywheel as it’s most likely to fail again. It’s not a bad job. You may need a hand to get the gearbox down. As it’s quite a heavy one.
The red stuff is rubber grease. Which helps reduce any friction from the spline to the clutch plate when installing, and it helps in stopping corrosion from the bolts. No sealant is required on this particular repair. Thanks.
Thanks for your prompt answer! I came up with 2 more questions, if you are so kind to answer :D. 1. I see the car didn't have the propshaft/VCU mounted. Did you undo it, or the owner decided to go 2wd? This is probably important and IRD oil has to be drained too? 2. Did you have to replace any oil seals in the entire process? Many thanks, great work, very efficient!@@WMCS
@@Filmusine44 Hi.. 1. The customer decided to go 2wd.. But if it did have a prop shaft i would have left it on.. I drained all the oil out as I don't like any mess whilst working. 2.. No oil seal was replaced., Which specific seal are you referring to.. Thanks.
Cool. I was thinking O rings, for example Box to IRD or drive shafts, but you would've mentioned if you did :), so I take it as a no. Nice to know propshaft can stay on.@@WMCS
Hay KAW Great video!! I'm using your video to help me remove my gearbox to replace the slave cylinder ive got as far as the ird but there's no movement in it and it won't come out! You got any advice, please? Thanks in advance
Please check all bolts’ been removed including back bracket. There’s another video where I show more in depth about the brackets and bolts of the IRD. it’s the red one on the channel.
@@WMCS I've drained the oil, drained coolant and disconnected the water pipes as I didn't want it to hang there as I'm doing it in stages, all four bolts are out but it's just won't budge!
can i ask please whats the make and model of your torque wrench tool please ,and how much they cost . ive been looking round and theres such a choice and price varies ,but if thats good enough for you its good enough for me lol. since im gonna have a go the money im saving i might as well invest in one thanks again Ant from Wales UK .
Indiana Tone .. Hey Ant. It’s a Milwaukee fuel. They are about £600 with batteries and charger. You’ll get years out of it. And very very powerful... Thanks for visiting the channel. Have a great Christmas and new year ✨🌟💫
thanks ,wow dont think i can justify that much lol i know the brand is good i just dident recognise it through the name ,maybe just get me ordinary ratchet n sockets out and take a little longer lol . i dont celebrate christmas but just view it as a holliday but enjoy yours and a rest ,i think youve earned it all the best Ant .
Indiana Tone otherwise. If you’re gonna use it once in a while. You can go for a RYOBI from Homebase. They are ok for one time or weekend projects. ...
My cluch is slipping on a td4. Just got it off ebay as an mot failure. Didnt notice the clutch, doh! So much for a bargain! Where are you based, and how much do you charge?

Rover 75 has same gearbox, slave cylinder, and same BMW 2.0 diesel. For some reason the 75 (and MG ZT) has a problem with new slave cylinders failing, but the original factory fitted slave cylinder lasted ages. I have a 2002 Rover 75 and original clutch & slave lasted 17 years (clutch worn, slave still good) then the new slave cylinder failed in less than 12 months. Any idea why? Does Freelander have this problem? Everyone in Rover 75 group says you don’t need to change flywheel, what do you think?
That’s correct. You don’t need flywheel change on them. They are made to last at least two or three clutches. The reason for the CSC fail is the travel goes too far and it leaks. There’s a mod for it. Two screws on the side.
@@WMCS the diesel 75 has same flywheel as the Freelander 1 2.0 td4, lots of people say to change flywheel on Freelander, but no one ever says this on the Rover. Strange. I’ve not heard about this mod mate, where do the screws go?
@@WMCS Glad you’ve said that - exactly what I think too mate, and it’s probably the Rover 75 guys not changing the DMF that is helping the CSC to fail quicker. Is that mod with the screws for this or a different model, I’m trying to think about that one I’ve got engine and box out my ZT at the mo
really 3.5 hours but you didn't do this the first time, I'll start, the transfer box started to whistle ... what do you recommend? replacing them with a used one or replacing the bearings
teddywood1 thanks a lot for your review and for visiting the channel Very much appreciated. Hope you’re keeping well... did you used to do a bit of the old mechanical work back in the day ....
teddywood1 that’s a great way to keep to pass on the knowledge... I think the motor trade is a great way to earn a living but you have to really enjoy it then it’s not really work anymore .... Shame that the hybrids are starting to take over. It’ll be a different game altogether in about 10 years I’d think.
Brilliant design to change a clutch,I dont think.oh how Land Rover lost their way. I had one go two weeks after purchasing a brand new td4 wasn’t a hoppy bunny when the work was explained, demanded a new car ,mmmm after a long fight I got one ,with an automatic gearbox
