2007 Hyundai Accent 1.6L AT - 93K miles
- Mitsuboshi timing belt (from Aisin kit)
- Aisin water pump (from Aisin kit)
- GMB (Beck/Arnley) Idler and tension pulleys
I had bought the Aisin TKK-001 kit, but decided not to use the included PHC bearings because of bad reviews of catastrophic failure. I bought the green Beck/Arnley, GMB pulleys and I feel good about using those instead.
In addition to timing belt parts, I would also recommend buying the idler pulley for the AC belt, since it probably has similar wear and pretty much has to come off anyway.
It seems that some (aftermarket) water pumps are thicker than the original one, and may or may not require a longer bolt which they should include. All of my stock bolts still had thread sticking out of the new Aisin pump. But I went ahead and used the new longer gold bolt on the shortest stock bolt anyway since it was included.
To torque the crank bolt, I shortly zapped it with the electric impact.
Uncommon tools used:
- electric impact - for crank bolt.
- 10mm box wrench - for water pump pulley bolts.
- bungee cord - to keep power steering reservoir out of the way
- pry bar - to lever tensioner pulley
- clothes pin - to hold the belt onto the cam pulley.
- white out - to mark the old belt and transfer onto new.
- razor scraper - to remove old water pump gasket.

Ive done this on an 2000 escort ............. but THIS , this is intimidating. I can see I would run across something that would push me beyond my patience,probably multiple times. A 2 hour job, would probably take me 10 hours.

It’s better to replace all water pump timing bell tensors pulleys and regular bells if you take it’s to a mechanic. I do my own work I make sure is done right plus saves me money

Have a Kia Rio with 1.6 l. did mine . this is the 2nd time I have replaced it . Belt broke after 60804 miles on it should have been replaced at 40000 miles . recap changed factory belt at 94200, replacement broke at 155004 miles, with 60804 miles on it . bent 2 valves intake #3 cylinder .Now for my mess up . neglected to torque the bolt in the tensioner slot side . was makeing more noise than I thought it should , thought it might have been the cam shaft caps not torqued right. When I took off the top belt cover noticed excess slack in the timing belt . Tore it down and discovered I didn't tighten down the bolt on the slot side. Now I have to replace the timing belt again due to wear.

Can a leaking water pump, here, cause coolant to get into the oil pan? I think that may be what happened to mine, a 2007 Hyundai Accent. Or would it's weep hole leak to the outside of the timing belt cover? Haven't torn into it yet to see, though. Thanks.

If I dont plan on replacing the tensioner could I just loosen the tensioner,slip the new belt on,then re-tighten the tensioner? Not take off the tensioner,just back it off temporarily.

At the 17:18 point, did you cut your finger while trying to pull off the sharp factory steel gasket like I did? It sure looked that way! While doing this job, the gasket sliced right through my rubber glove and into my finger, so I took a short break to wash my hands, stop the bleeding, apply a band-aid, and put on a fresh pair of rubber gloves. I learned to not pull too hard on a metal gasket, but to carefully pull or pry it away from the engine at several points. Other than that, it went smoothly. Very helpful video.

at 26:37 ...I read on a forum, the guy said "do not remove water pump pulley,instead (something else) cant remember what he said to do instead of pulling the pulley .....but I see what a total pain it is getting it back on, Id have even harder time even.

Hey my mechanic said that a bracket broke and it caused the pulley to break. But he said that the guy that changed it before put the bracket in the wrong place, causing it to break. So I’m buying a new pulley and belt. Oh the car always had a little rattle on that side too he said it was related.

why would u need to Mark the new belt? theres timing marks on the crank & cam pulleys & thats the crucial marks, so Im not understanding why the belt would get marked. Each tooth is identicle to the next. You cant put the belt on wrong as long as its facing teeth down. As long as your marks are lined up ofcoarse.

Can ANYONE tell me EXACTLY what size tools are needed for this job??? 8,10,12,17,22MM breaker bar? Im aboutr to tackle this job in a few weeks, nervous af , I did my ford escort 2.0 looking back not intimidating now that Ive done it ........but This job looks trecherous. I wannna know EVERY tool needed so i have them all rather than taking all my tools & having to dig thru tools looking for sizes. i wanna know every tool before I start. 2 jacks. 4 way lug wrench . Anyone have a complete list of all the tools for this job ???

I've read that people have had issues with the tensioner puller spring braking. But looking at this, it looks to me like the second bolt on the right of the tensioner pulley secures the pulley in place. So if the spring broke, the pulley would remain in place (provided the bolt is tight enough). Am I correct?

@@saigen73 incorrect. Without the proper tension on the belt, it could skip, and considering all Hyundai engines are interference engines, that means with one faulty spring, you could send a piston through the cylinder. Just buy the 10$ part and u won’t need to buy a whole new engine/ car.

How do you know how to line up the new timing belt marks? I see a lot of videos doing this but no sure how you would line up the timing marks? can someone explain? Thanks!

The Aisin kit I bought comes with a little instructions and diagram telling about the marks. I imagine other brands of belt hopefully provide similar instructions. If you look carefully on the gears and block, there are arrows/notches/ markings that line up somewhat intuitively, and usually coincide with top dead center. Maybe technically, it doesn't matter at all if the markings are aligned, as long as both the cam shaft and crank shaft are in the same position when you put on the new belt. But if something moves while you have the belt off, you will wish you lined everything up first.

So I have a little easier time turning it by hand to match up alignment points. Turning by hand with the plugs in still makes compression, and resistance, and/or might make me overshoot the alignment point. With the plugs out, it turns more freely, I believe. Plus, it’s also good time to inspect the plugs, clean things.

ANYBODY KNOW THE TRICK TO GETTING NEW PS BELT ON???? cant roll the PS pulley & at best I can get it halfway on the pulley no further .... Anybody know the trick?? do we loosen the big main pulley bolt itself? been fight ing with it for about 45 miutes had to take a break. there has to be a method, this ghuy walked away with the belt a few times, then came back & slipped it on pretty easy. Anybody??
