its always funny watching a video on how to do things at home that a mechanic does, and everyone in the comments complaining that it cant be done with just a screwdriver. Great video, going to do this soon!

Thanks for the comments, appreciate the feedback. We are just trying to show the average person that these types of repairs can be done and what you would need to get the job done. Maybe the shops are upset since they might lose some business, we are not sure. At the end of the day we are just creating videos that can help highlight the process and walk them through the repair how we would do it. Not everyone does it the same or agrees with the approach. But as the old saying goes "there's more than one way to skin a cat". Let us know how the repair goes on your Audi. Thanks again for hanging out, Cheers!

Excellent video mate. I'm struggling to get the bolt from the lower control arm past the tie rod boot. Does it damage thr internals if i punch it out like that?
@BradleysGarage
@BradleysGarage 23 дня назад
Thanks for the question Samuel, sorry to hear you are having difficulty with those bolts. They are a tight squeeze to get by the steering boot but they will fit. I would not worry too much about the threads on those bolts. They are pretty durable and there isn't much downward pressure on them. Honestly the Audi repair manual recommends replacing them but we chose to reuse them. You can find the torque specs here (Page 144) - static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2012/SB-10072383-2280.pdf And if you want to purchase new bolts/nuts, here are the part numbers- Subframe bolt front lower - www.fcpeuro.com/products/vw-screw-genuine-vw-wht001949 Subframe front lower nut - www.fcpeuro.com/products/audi-shouldered-hex-nut-genuine-audi-wht001987 Shock fork bolt - www.fcpeuro.com/products/audi-vw-hex-bolt-n10241202 Shock fork nut - www.fcpeuro.com/products/audi-vw-self-locking-nut-n10106402 Rear arm bolt - www.fcpeuro.com/products/audi-shouldered-hex-bolt-genuine-audi-n10731501 Rear arm nut - (Same as the subframe nut) Good luck on your Audi project, let us know how it goes. Cheers!

Hello ✋🏻, i need your advise please. My ride is Audi A4 2006 2.0L ... I had a complete set of control arms replaced today (total 10pcs), and being aligned afterwards, but unfortunately i experienced a very stiff steering wheel. Any clue ?
@BradleysGarage
@BradleysGarage 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for the question Hank. How did the steering feel prior to the installation of the new parts? You should notice everything will be a bit stiffer especially if these were the original 2006 suspension parts as those would be very worn out by now. I would double check all parts were installed correctly, although the alignment shop shouldn't be able to perform a proper alignment if they weren't on correct. That being said I would see how the steering feels with the car off the ground first. You should be able to turn the wheels from lock-to-lock by hand and feel a smooth transition side to side. If it is feeling notchy then you might actually have an issue with the steering rack itself. When driving does the wheel want to return naturally back to center? Do you feel like the car is "wandering" around and have a lack of response? If it feels normal off the ground then you can look for other items that may be the cause of the stiff steering, parts incorrectly installed, poor alignment, power steering fluid low. If it is still stiff then I would take it back to the alignment shop to double check things are correct. Let us know what you are able to find out. Good luck on your Audi project, Cheers!

what was the 21mm ball joint hat nut torque spec on the straight lower arm?
@BradleysGarage
@BradleysGarage 3 месяца назад
Thanks for the question Bradley, is this the nut you are referring to - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q7c_O_jyy90.html The lower ball joint nut (21mm) is torqued to 145 Nm or 107 ft. lbs. You can find all the torque values for the B8/B8.5 A4 here - static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2012/SB-10072383-2280.pdf good luck on your Audi project. Cheers!

What about the ball joint on that curved control arm?, can it be changed?
@BradleysGarage
@BradleysGarage 3 месяца назад
Thanks for the question. The ball joint on the rear control is made in that arm and cannot be replaced separately. You will need to purchase the entire rear lower control arm if that ball joint is bad. Just be sure to verify your VIN when ordering the parts since they are 65mm and 75mm sizes depending on the suspension your car came with. The aftermarket arms are about $100 with the OEM Audi ones over $500. Good luck on your Audi project. Cheers!

The aluminum knuckle may expand faster than the steel insert? Isn’t there a risk that the insert will dislodge?
@BradleysGarage
@BradleysGarage 2 месяца назад
Thanks for the comments, there is a risk that the metal sleeve will come out. Most of the time a little heat will help dislodge it and not pull the sleeve out. If it does, then you you need to get a new assembly unfortunately. Good luck on your Audi project, Cheers!

@BradleysGarage
@BradleysGarage 11 месяцев назад
Hey Rico, glad you enjoyed the video. Ideally you should get an alignment after doing any suspension work. We haven't done it and everything still feels great. Our plan is to swap out the current 17" wheels for another OEM 18" Audi A4 wheel in the near future. After we get new wheels and tires, we will get the alignment performed. Thanks again for hanging out, Cheers!

Did you reuse all the bolts? Iv heard they are stretch bolts
@BradleysGarage
@BradleysGarage 4 месяца назад
Thanks for the question Bob. They are technically TTY (torque to yield) bolts and should be replaced after removal. Some of the stretch bolts that Audi uses (for the CVT mounting for example) can be re-used once. Not sure why these suspension ones are single use? We chose not to replace them as a lot of people do and have not ever had any issues. You should be able to get all the hardware for less than $50 if you want to get new ones. Good luck on your Audi project. Cheers!

Please help, I had my front lower control arm bushings replaced and a 4 wheel alignment done on my 2013 Audi A4 yesterday by a reputable mechanic shop. Today, I was unable to navigate around a curve and had an accident. The car would not go in the direction that I was steering (slightly left) so it kept going straight/right and made me crash into a curb and damage the whole bottom passenger side of the car. The alignment is now really off and it is not safe to drive. How can I tell if was a failure as a result of the work I just had done? What should I do? Should I take it back to the shop and hope that they are honest? Should I file an insurance claim and let them investigate? Could my inability to control the vehicle be a result of of replacing the front lower control arm bushings and/or mechanic error?
@BradleysGarage
@BradleysGarage 5 месяцев назад
Hey Karen, sorry to hear about your accident, glad to hear no one got hurt. I would definitely reach out to the shop who performed the repairs and explain what happened. Just changing the control arm bushing should not have caused the issue you are describing but something may have not gotten put together properly since it literally happened the very next day. Typically steering related parts would be the tie rod ends and possibly the ball joint could have an impact on the ability to steer. But like we said if something was not secured properly, then it could have definitely caused the accident. Only if the shop if unwilling to help or look into the accident cause would we involve the insurance company. If it's a reputable shop, they would want to know things are being done correctly and want to figure it out for you. Good luck, let us know how it goes. Cheers!

when removing the rear lower control arm you shouldn't hammer on the ball joint directly without the jaw tool still attached, you can knock the steel insert out of the aluminum arm and then have to replace the whole knuckle .
@BradleysGarage
@BradleysGarage 8 месяцев назад
Hey Kyle, appreciate the tip, we didn't realize that there was a sleeve that could come out. That would not be good to have to replace the entire knuckle. Thanks again for hanging out, Cheers!

“Quick measurement with your caliper” oh yeah because everyone has a pair of calipers 😂
@BradleysGarage
@BradleysGarage 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comments UKManc, appreciate the feedback. We should have mentioned that you can use a SAE tape measure to double check the bushing size then just convert that to mm. Or if you have a metric tape measure than that would make it even easier. Here in the states you can get some cheap calipers for $10 so a lot of people have them in the garage. www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/measuring-marking/calipers-micrometer/calipers/6-in-composite-digital-caliper-63586.html Thanks again for hanging out, Cheers!

Thanks for the comments, we know pressing out the bushings is not ideal for everyone. We just wanted to show the most cost effective way to replace them if you have access to the equipment. You can also purchase the complete arms with new bushings ready to bolt up so there won't be any need for special equipment. Thanks again for hanging out, Cheers!

Technically you should replace the bolts for the Control Arm. We reused them but the book says to replace them. Here is the spec book, page 147. Good luck on your Audi project. static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2012/SB-10072383-2280.pdf Cheers!
