10:30 Cobalt SS vs My Civic Si
In 2008, Chevrolet decided to go turbo, instead of supercharger on their Cobalts. This resulted in a more reliable and tuner-friendly platform. Watch the video to see how this did against my 2013 Honda Civic Si!

Corrections: 1) it’s got the F35 transmission not the f23. 2) the major recall on the LNF cobalts were the porous block in the early models, nothing to do with the cylinder sleeves. Some confusion and apologies 😎

Another correction. 2005 - 2007 Cobalt were supercharged. 2008 - 2010 were turbo charged. Same with HHR. Redline was the first supercharged in 2004.

The F35 is a Saab-designed five-speed manual transmission built in Saab’s Gothenburg, Sweden, powertrain plant. This extensively tested manual transmission was originally introduced in the 1984 Saab 9000, and was later used in the Saab 900, 9-3 and 9-5, Saturn Ion Redline, Chevrolet Cobalt SS, Chevrolet HHR SS and various GM/Opel transverse engine front-wheel drive applications.

I got a 09 cobalt ss back sedan. Just replaced the old lnf motor with 110,000 miles with a lnf with 30k miles and she’s running like a dream. Love the look on people’s faces when they get beat by a cobalt . It’s all stock but plan on getting a zzp downpipe and a K&n filter . Just want to tune it and that’s it 👌👌 but your couple looks great man ! I love the wing . My stock cobalt just has the low profile wing.

For further info, I have an 09 LNF for a daily, I've never had any major issues at all but my car is well kept. The LNF blocks can handle anything the stock turbo can throw at it, upgraded turbos is a different story. Power wise with stock turbo, I made 238whp stock, full bolt ons and 93 tune I made 318wp, final numbers on full E85 tune were 343whp 386wtq. Big issue with the LNF's are the trannys, your at risk with upgraded turbos and even stock turbo on E. Get a tune, night and day difference, on E its a completely different animal.

I used to have a 2016 Dodge Challenger SXT 3.6 vvt. Now if you have ever driven a newer Dodge Challenger even as small as the V6 version you understand what replacing a tire quicker than normal. I had a brand new set of pilots on it when I got it, a little over a month I was replacing the tires on it. I would do this 4 or 5 times in 3 ½ years. Now that was buying really good almost brand new used ones for a higher price than the basic used tires. I purchased 1 brand new set on it that lasted about 6 months or so. This was all with me not trying to have wheel spin at all. Yeah you want to buy a lot of tires for your car buy a Dodge Challenger after 2010. The Chevy Cobalt SS and Pontiac G5 GT really are a nice vehicles. Nowadays, they may not handle quite like the newer Ford Focus ST and Fiesta ST, but Pontiac-Chevy took a solid page out of the Dodge Neon SRT4 and Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS’ recipe book with the powerful forced induction engine tech under the hood. While many other preferred the Subaru Impreza WRX, Acura RSX Type S, Scion tC, Honda Civic Si, Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, and Toyota Corolla XRS; is the Chevy Cobalt SS definitely stood tall in the absence of the dead Chevy Camero. It’s a shame that Chevy had so many insane reliability issues and recalls with the car model though: www.cars.com/articles/chevrolet-cobalt-has-long-recall-history-1420663029206/

So, I'd like to add/correct a couple things here. It seemed like he roughly knew about the Cobalts and all that, but didn't really know what he was on about. Wall of text incoming First off, a new set of tires every year and a half? Idk what kinda tires he's running but that's a bit excessive. I could see if you were running Advans, or Toyo R888s, or some other street-slick / street performance tire, but for the average tire, that's way too often. Regarding the block, I don't know if it is because the 'sleeves are too thin' on the LNF, but compared to the LSJ (which is the 05-07 SC block), the LNF is the weaker one of the two (although the SC model made less hp at either 220 or 240 I can't remember). The LNF can handle up to around 400whp stock, whereas the LSJ can allegedly hold up to almost 500whp. Stock boost is about 14-15, but as he said, GM had a stage kit to upgrade the ECU and tune to make about 20. The K04 turbo is really not suited for any more than 20. I've heard of many owners trying for 23psi and over, and blowing the turbo or manifold. The transmission, is completely wrong. There is no such thing as the F23 transmission for the Cobalt. Stock, it used a Saab F35 5 speed trans, but you can easily upgrade it to a 6spd F40 trans from the Buick Regals (but gearing is poor). I would maybe brush it past him as possibly an aftermarket trans (it still doesn't exist), but he hasn't done anything to it so yea it's the F35. Maybe he just forgot what the number was or something who knows. And again, regarding the turbo. Oh boy when he mentioned his plans. The reason people go big turbo on this car, is because if they want to make more than around 400-450whp, a big turbo is almost necessary (and then a full engine rebuild at that). 'Its uncommon for people to do twins', because it literally doesn't work. Unless you're planning to strip the entire bay, even then there is no space to realistically put 2 turbos. Hence why a lot of guys either leave it, or do big turbo. And because very few, if any, people would go through that much work with a Cobalt. No offense to the guy, but it seemed like he put on his 'I (think I) know what I'm talking about' cap, knowing it was for a video. Credit to him tho, he was correct about some things. Just not all, which is what learning and correcting is for. Also, that gum chewing was just... eugh
@derqatarzan4207
@derqatarzan4207 4 года назад
So, I'd like to add/correct a couple things here. It seemed like you roughly know about cobalt's ;-) first stock boost is 15-18psi pending on conditions. The stage 1 kit from gm amped up timing fuel and boost, it was @21psi. There is indeed such a thing as f23 transmissions for the cobalt. It's actually preferred for a lot of high hp balts but the f35 can take one hell of a beating. People don't do twin-charged because it's so problematic, not because there's not enough room. The lnf can take over 400whp no problem, just ask my balt that's been at 487whp for 140,000 miles. What you are referring to is actually the casting of the early lnf blocks in 08 they were foam cast and were indeed weaker but the later years were sand-cast which rid the blocks of those issues. It takes a whole pile of money to get a lsj to a were a stock lnf with a tune is at. The k04 can indeed be pushed to 24-25psi with ease, mine was on the car for 7 years at @25psi. You really don't hear about them being blown up let alone the manifold, that's on the chevy cruises that made the hotside a one-piece with the exhaust manifold, not even close to the same turbo. There is more than a handful of people running lnfs stock bottom end over 450whp with serious miles on them. Oh, and when you race a car and actually push it, a set of tires a summer is not only normal but a necessity.
@sergnextdoor5213
@sergnextdoor5213 4 года назад
The tires wear out faster because of camber.... and you are right, its the f35 transmission not the f23. People do both single turbo or twin turbo set ups but its less complex, more cost efficient, and more common to go single turbo. Pretty bad in front of a camera but i do know my car. lol
@ValkyrieLightwing
@ValkyrieLightwing 4 года назад
@@derqatarzan4207 I mean I've never heard of the F23. Ever. Not on ZZP, and not on OTTP either. Just the F40 and F35. Craziest turbo setup I've ever seen was a sidewinder mount or front mount, front facing setup. But those are very rare even then, as they require a ton of work as it is. The reason I mentioned the turbo blowing, is well not only have I heard plenty of stories about it on forums, but allegedly before I bought mine, buddy turned it up to 23psi and then started making rattling noises which a shop just told me is most likely a cracked manifold or gasket. He turned it down to 20psi where it's been ever since. Although that's what I've heard, "allegedly". And yes, performance tires wear out quick, especially racing, but it didn't look like he is doing much racing. Although I could be wrong, I don't know the guy. Had my Advans since early summer 2018 and they're not even close to being worn and I've done a lot of highway driving with it.
@ValkyrieLightwing
@ValkyrieLightwing 4 года назад
@@sergnextdoor5213 I know camber ruins tires. I got friends that are running anywhere from -2° to -17°. They chew through a set every few months for the higher -° setups. How much camber you runnin tho? Didn't look like much if any at all. I got -1.5° on my fronts and -0.7° on the rears and still plenty of tread on mine. Even for daily driving a set every year seems high outside of street slicks or tires like Neovas or R888s. And again, someone show me a twin setup with a Cobalt, please. Like I genuinely want to see that. Craziest thing I've seen is a side mount, and a front facing front mount. That's it. Because it's not worth it to basically dump half the bay and rearrange a bunch of stuff to squeeze two turbskis in there. That's all shit I've learned from the previous owner, or forums, FB groups (not the most accurate shit tho so take it with a grain of NaCl), and other buddies who have had Cobalts for longer than I and have modded them more. While I'm at it, apparently the F23 Getrag does exist. Its just not sold by ZZP or OTTP even though they can allegedly hold more than 700hp and aren't shit like the F35 is. According to Wikipedia. From what I can find, it was either only available on the NA 2.4L version or as an option on the Special Edition? So I was incorrect on that one.

actually this is true, the pcm has a "learn-down" ability that makes air/fuel adjustments by itself. This was specifically intended for bolt-ons to work without needing a re-tune. Initially this was unique to the cobalt for LNF engines, but GM actually added it to the Saturn Sky Redline and the Pontiac Solstice GXP with a factory tune upgrade from GM that was only about $500 and allowed you to retain your warranty. The Tune was available for all three cars and brought it to 290hp/340tq. It sounds pretty crazy but look it up, there's still literature up on the internet about this "learn-down" functionality

Thin sleeves ? Lol you don't know what ur talking about man. The problem with some 09 blocks was prous block, which is a defective cast that produces micro cracks or pores between oil and coolant galleys where coolant can leak into the oil. Can happen immediatly like mine did brand new, or over time which most do because it gets worse. Nothing to do with sleeves. Which are pushed in and are all the same thickness on lnf. GM on later updates of the ecotech blocks went to sandcast blocks which is a lot less likely to have the issue.

Cameron Hill Cameron Hill firstly it’s a f35 transmission not a f23, secondly the 05-07 are supercharged 08-10 are turbocharged. The lsj motor is actually the more reliable motor. The recalls he was talking about aren’t even close to accurate. Is that enough pal? Lol

@@sergnextdoor5213 you said 260 crank bro in the vid. Simple math says that either your HP to the wheels that you said in the vid is wrong or the crank numbers are wrong.

yehuda1990 260 crank , around 230-240 whp. HP numbers are never exact. That’s why there’s a general rule of thumb being 10-15% ..
