As someone who has owned both. I would say that for programmers graphics designers and technical engineers, the 2013 is the better buy. The extra graphical power and the screen real estate shine in both professional and personal (gaming) use. For anyone wanting it for longevity, you wont be able to upgrade the screen but in terms of RAM and hard drive, the 2012 model is actually more upgradable unless you go for the top spec 2013.

2012 vs 2013 only difference is the retina and graphics card with the factory ssd but in the 2012 you can upgrade to 16 gbs of ram and install a bigger memory and can get an actual ssd in it while in the 2013 everything is soidered in which typically the 2012 is a better MacBook to go with and the graphics isn’t really much different

The PCIe based flash storage for the 2013 MBP is not soldered on the logic board. Since it uses a proprietary connector, upgrading the SSD to a higher capacity via a third party vendor is very expensive as of now, though it is possible to upgrade it in the future when SSD prices come down.

I bought a mid 2012 13" MBP non-retina i7 used for about 700$ less than retail. I'm about to swap in a SSD and use a caddy to move the HDD to the optical drive bay. I could also up the ram from 8 to 16GB. New MBP may have retina but you can't upgrade it! If you aren't fussed about the slightly slimmer and slightly newer characteristics, I would seriously consider making a beast non-retina MBP - search "Fastest MacBook Pro on The Planet Upgrade" to see what you can do.

Macbook Pro 2012 is much better. I can upgrade it and add 16 GB of RAM and SDD much cheaper. And it is thick, i love it.

What’s wrong with buying a used MacBook? I bought two and have no issues I got a late 2011 and uspgraded the hdd with a Samsung evo 860 and got two 8gbs crucial ram chips running 1.6 ghz lol and bought a late 08 running 8 gbs of ram and a ssd on it and no issues lol

One can be fixed the other gets thrown away.. One can have its battery changed easily, the other costs over 400 dollars.. One can be upgraded, the other you are stuck with what you get. Once is made much better because its simply able to be... the other is made to compromise to achieve a certain weight and thinness.

I've been looking at second hand macbooks for some light school work, and the prices and specs of the retina macbooks are insanely high. Considering how most of them are the base spec with 4gb of ram, sheesh that ain't cutting it in 2022. Whereas you could get a 2012 and swap in a fast ssd and 16gb of ram just like that, sure it has a lower resolution screen but I wonder if that actually gives better battery life. Soldering memory and storage is just anti-consumer and creating more e-waste.

Reading the comments in 2019 is funny. So many people thinking the Retina Display is a gimmick or that the DVD was a deal breaker. Whoops. Anyone who chose the 2012 now owns an thick, heavy, low res machine with minimal value. The 2013 with the HD display and fast SSD still sell for $500 in 2019.

Yes, this helped. I was in the Apple store today trying to compare them. I currently own and love my Macbook 2009 but it's time for another Mac in the home. I'll probably give my book to the children and pick up the pro for me. Lol. I was going back and forth with the idea of getting the display for the increase of speed and improved visual versus a hard drive with enough space to keep everything together. I simply don't think that the marginal increase of speed is significant enough for me to bother buying an external drive too. I honestly think that I like the 2012 display better. Seeing them side by side, I know I could be happy with the 2012 and will eliminate the need for buying a book AND an external. I'd rather have everything together. You really let me see all that I need to know to make a decision. So back off to Apple tomorrow. Well presented.

It would have been a fairer test if you were to have the 2012 MBP run Mavericks. When you were showing the Geekbench scores, it shows it is running 10.8.

2013 version has a more powerful graphics chip, so depending on exactly what kind of games you want, it may be a wise purchase. If you do not choose at least 8GB RAM however, the 2012 version will be more upgradable (minus the graphics) so the RAM and hard drive can be added to later.

+AdmiralHD It depends on the graphics settings you want for League of Legends. I use a 2009 macbook duo core at the lowest settings and I get 40-60 FPS. Non-Retina could perhaps offer the same performance for mid-level settings on the graphics. The non-retina model can be user upgraded (Ram, hard drive, Disc drive swap). With the Retina, you'll need at list the mid range with 256G. So you can spend $500 on user-upgradable stuff on the Non-retina, or you can spend the $500 on a retina. Personally, I find that the non-retina has clear brights, good darks, and has vivid colors; whereas the Retina doesn't wash out tiny details and has a brightness limit. You can always get a used or refurbished 2014 model Retina and get the best of both worlds. Just decide ahead of time if you'll ever want to watch movies on your laptop's DVD drive, accessories are $70 from Apple for that.

***** I highly recommend you to try to think over again to buy which computer suits you best. Don't just depend on one product. I believe other companies had much better features depending on how you actually use it. Macs are great and I love my 2009 unibody white Macbook which I'm typing up right now. I heard from people that Asus was pretty terrible when it come to computers. I'm also in the middle of thinking of getting a standard Macbook Pro (latest) or a retina Macbook Pro. Yes, I'm a student too and I pretty much use my computer for both education and handling graphical interfaces. That's why I didn't want to touch a PC again for myself. Not because I hate them, it's just that, I'm already adapted to Mac's interface. ;)

heartsoul209 Hey, I would highly recommend anyone who are interested to buy the 2012 MacbookPro, buy them online from the company's store directly. If you wanted to upgrade your Mac's performance directly in stores nearby, it might take an additional 2 months or more to have your mac retrieved back to you in good condition. Probably, it would took a few weeks to have your Mac delivered to you as soon as you registered the order. So yeah, go buy it online if you're impatient!

without the dvd, extra ports, as well as the ability to change parts.. how do you justify the mbp model name, a heavier mba with limited features. the 12 inch mbar thats coming out soon may actually be a better buy. because it is light and definitely going to have something close if not more than 12 hrs of battery life.

I installed a Samsung Evo SSD 250Gb with my 2.9 i7 processor Mid 2012 Macbook Pro 13" and it's just amazing how fast everything is working. Boot up, opening programs I mean everything is just great. No regrets! I bought some cheap movies at Walmart for my flight to New York from L.A. and put my ear buds on and kicked back. The weight and Retina doesn't make a difference to me on the 13'' models but maybe the 15" would. Samsung makes a killer SSD!

The macbook non retina still has some advantages over the retina but overall the retina is worth the money i guess. Its just that with non-retina you get full upgradable parts an optical drive (doesn't matter than much but you get it) the battery life light-bar (which is totally cool by the way) and still great performance both battery and power wise. You can get one very cheap and upgrade to more ram and an SSD later but whatever you do the retina with the same specs is gonna have more speed and a better display. But once you get a retina be careful to choose the specs wise cause you are married to them. In my opinion the pro's baseline should be 8gb/256gb thats the minimum.

I upgraded my macbook pro mid 2012 to have the core i7 processor and 8 gb of RAM plus it comes with 500 GB of hard drive memory as opposed to the base of the new models which I believe is 128 GB for the same price. A better computer for the same price. The only thing that doesn't benefit from this is the graphics but it really doesn't make a difference in my opinion for the things I use this for. Definitely worth it for me.

i have mi 2012 with 16Gb RAM and 256GB SSD + 500GB HDD, its fast as hell and a lot of battery , that never run out. the only problem is that it`s not capable of editing or watching 4K videos. the rest..... its very similar to all retina... or i can't see the difference.

Since no one has answered your other question, yes upgrading from an HDD to an SSD would make a substantial difference in boot up speed and performance across the OS in regards to opening apps and even giving a boost in performance if you use it for video editing where drive speeds do make a difference.

Hello, Thanks for your good review! I need to compare 2012 MacBook Pro 13" core i7 8GB RAM, 750GB Hard drive with base model (core i5, 4GB RAM, 128GB Hard) of 2013 MacBook Pro Retina 13", both are coming with similar prices these days. It's a hard comparison for me since they are very different in terms of specification and both have their own pros. What I do care about is processing power and speed. I'm going to run intense Matlab and Mathematica codes on my future laptop. I'm not sure how much does SSD hard drive effect processing speed and whether I should vote for that or for core i7 processor and 8GB RAM on non-retina version. Battery life does not matter that much to me neither does the display. Thanks!

Get the 2012, but buy a 500gb Samsung ssd for about $250 and you'll get similar performance. But you'll get way more storage for less. If you don't care about Retina display. Then maybe just get the base model, and an external drive.

Buy a 500gb ssd from Samsung, for about $250. It'll be about the same price overall as the 128 gb retina Mac Pro. But you get similar performance, but way more storage.

actually macbook pro with retina 2013 model. it weight is 3.46 lbs not 3.57 lbs and thickness is 0.71 inch not 0.75 inch.

Seriously the lack of an optical drive is almost irrelevant. When you remove something that size in a MacBook there is so much more room for better "stuff" to power the thing, buy and external optical drive or digitalise all your CDs on your current PC or Mac

I'm undecided if I should get the 2012 mbp 2.9ghz i7, 8gb,500gb or 2015 mbp retina 2.7ghz i5, 8gb, 128gb. I like the fact the 2012 has FireWire,Ethernet,disk drive, upgradable memory but retina 2015 has hdmi, one more thunderbolt,dual mic,Retina display,Intel iris graphics 6100. The other option is the mba 2.2ghz i7,8gb,128gb. I'm buying the Mac for everyday use videos, photos, web browsing, listening to a lot of music and I'm gonna start using dj software to mix music. You won't have much space on 128gb. Mac with all free ape apps (imovie, pages etc.) tajea up 50gb. You'll have about 70, to keep the high ssd speed, you should let 15 gb free. 55gb,is that enough for you?

You can't upgrade 13 mbp. There is no option for discrete gpu for this base model.

Once you Upgrade a 2012 MBP with SSD and 16gb ram its price is gonna shoot up.. very close to the 2013 Retina Macbook and then you factor in a better screen and battery life, latest CPU,GPUs, new retinas are worth it

Lots of errors just visible from the pictures on the screen and what you're saying. Very well made video, but you may want to spend a little more time proofing next time.

So basically.... both are great computers!!! Just one is a bit faster in terms of specific things depending on what you want to do. BUT ... they're both still good.
