My 2016 Outback 3.6R had the notorious clunking/rattling noise coming from the front left of the car when driving over small bumps and potholes. It was really obvious and annoying when driving wash boarded gravel roads, or when the left tires drove over raised lane divider bumps.
This video walks through the procedure to fix the issue, per Subaru's technical service bulletin 04-17-17R, dated 08/20/2019. While this video shows the procedure on a '16 Outback, it also applies to the following models:
2015-2019 Outback
2015-2019 Legacy
2015-2021 WRX
TSB link here: static.nhtsa.g...
Subaru spring kit (P/N 34130AL010, ~$20) here: parts.subaru.c...
TS40 "Torx Plus" bit (~$7) here: www.amazon.com...
Simple and straight forward procedure, should only take you about 10 minutes after watching this video. Hope you find this helpful, and feel free to leave comments/questions with feedback and to help others in the same boat.

I have same front rattle noise on 2015 Outback 3.6R. After many visits to Subaru, changed Stab Links, front stabilizer bar, checked Struts, they finaly changed (Steering Assembly) + plus (Spring and Pad). This worked for about a 1.5 years but now rattle is back. Last week Subaru said they can change Spring and Pad (again) and incase does not work, recommends changing Steering Assembly. Damn! It's totally disappointing how a small Spring and Pad part causes a Solid Car to have annoying ratling sound. Subaru shud have fixed this (defect) long time ago ! Hope they fixed this on 6th Gen. Thanks for sharing Video 👍

Thank you so much for posting this video. I came to RU-vid looking to see what might be causing my front and rattle when going over paved road that Had been patched. I thought it might be my pushings or tie rods, but I could not see any issue with them. I figured for $25 why not give this fix a try? It certainly seem to be the symptoms I had. My bolt in Spring we’re located on the left side, it looks a little different than your video. I have a 2016 outback. Needless to say much to my amazement this solved a rattling noise. Thank you so much for posting this it was very helpful and potentially saved me a lot of money.

Thank you very much! I have a 2018 2.5i with this rattle going on for three years now. Dealer re-torqued upper left strut mounts and I convinced myself that fixed it - until I went over exactly the right kind of crap paving. Ordering the spring kit.

Hey, replacing that spring didn’t work for me, after installing I was still hearing and feeling the clunking sounds. The dealership now saying it could be a problem with the steering (rack and pinion). I just traded it in for 2020 OB Limited because I couldn’t figure it out and was not about to put anymore money into it.

The same for me around 95K (last year) and the clunking was gone. However, clunking slowly came back and going to replace this spring soon.

Can confirm that if you cross-thread the screw, the $25 fix becomes a $2500 repair. A few other notes worth considering: rarely does the spring replacement completely resolve the rattle issue, given enough time the rattle always returns, and sometimes replacing the entire steering rack does not resolve the issue either. Have fun.
@dillonh321
@dillonh321 Год назад
Well if you can’t properly tighten a screw you shouldn’t be working on your own vehicle. How long until the rattle returns usually? Were you using the updated spring?
@charliesa66
@charliesa66 Год назад
@@dillonh321 I just did this today. Rattle is gone! However, I did have difficulty getting the screw back in. It takes a forceful turn to get the spring to compress while engaging the threads, and it's an odd angle with the metal support in the way... With patience, I got it back in and seems fine now.

Thanks for the video. Forget using a power tool for this - it's just one screw and you don't want to cross-thread the hole. Also, $26.90 (as of 5/2024) for a screw and small spring is criminal. You don't even need a new screw. You may be able to get away with stretching the existing spring or finding a suitable spring elsewhere for cents. A longer screw should work too.

I had a dealer replace (or the dealer "claimed") the spring while checking other issues, about 2 months ago (for my 16 OB 2.5). Now the clunking is slowly coming back and I begin to suspect the front sway bar / stabilizer link because my wife's '14 MDX had "almost" the same clunking noise. I replaced the front stabilizer links and no more clunking. Wondering whether I should replace the stabilizer links which can be a real pain to remove those rusted, salt-covered nuts (I went through that pain with my wife's MDX so believe me 🙂 )

I figure I would add my experience with this. I did it in about 30 minutes. 4cyl does look different underneath. It didn’t completely solve the problem for me. The rattling when wiggling the wheel is not as loud and the rattling over low speed bumps is less frequent and quieter. When it comes back all the way again I probably won’t bother doing it again.

My rattle gets more noticeable when it's cold. Took my 2019 outback into the dealership today and gave them TSB number. They ignored me and have replaced some bushings and the strut so far, and it still rattles. It's under warranty, so there no cost to me, but how arrogant do you have to be to not even read the tsb the customer gave you. We'll see what they say tomorrow.🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️
@TheBarkingSpider77
@TheBarkingSpider77 7 месяцев назад
After replacing the entire strut assembly and all bushings, they sent some kind of tech request to Subaru. Guess what Subaru told them? They told them to refer to TSB 04-17-17R.🤣 They had to special order the $20 part and said if it continues to rattle after that, they would replace the entire steering rack under warranty.
