I wish people would actually do some comparison on wages before they spout nonsense. Australian dollar $20 an hour ($15.70 US dollars) is about standard for professional production line wages in Australia. Toyota was paying MORE at their Melbourne Australia plant and still making great profit off each Toyota they made and exported. So here's some truth for you. Wages in Holden's plant were comparable to what US workers get at GM plants. US auto workers also get generous retirement and health plans. The Australian ran the standard superannuation retirement scheme that is mandated by government in all workplaces...it's no better or worse than other companies. Aussie Holden workers actually agreed to a three year wage freeze to help Holden out. Wages were NEVER the problem. And remember, the Europeans pay their workers much more (with more benefits and shorter hours). So please stop blaming the poor bastards working on Holden productions line who were loyal, hard working and produced quality superior (noted by official GM audit) to their American cousins working in US plants. Australian production was killed by poor product planning by GM US, an addiction to taxpayer subsidies to GM and by GM's need to rationalise their operations overseas because of the GFC. That's why they sold Opel to Peugeot. As far as the VF series 2 Commodore (as this car really is) is concerned, it is the finest car ever made in Australia...truly world class in every department. Yes...I own one...a late model Commodore Sportwagon that you folks in the US don't get. I love it and will cherish it as the last gasp of a once mighty car maker in this country. Personally I will never forgive GM US and Mary Barra (GM CEO) for the decision to kill the factory. Nearly a hundred years of proud Australian production and engineering gone in the swipe of a pen. And even when a Belgian industrialist tried to buy the factory to keep producing the V series Zeta-platform cars in production for world export as luxury cars GM made the process so difficult he walked away. Nope...I will never buy another Holden as long as I live and I note, with a tinge of sadness, that Holden's fortunes in Australia as a pure importer are pushing the business to near death. From my perspective I would rather the brand die that see it relegated to having the proud Holden Lion badge slapped on Euro crap or Korean Daewoo cars.

@falko2904 6 лет назад
Uh, why. If you like it sporty, just leave it in sport. Why have it loud in touring? I like the option to fly under the radar when I need to. Mostly I drive in sport mode, almost never use performance, and track mode on the track. But when I am doing a long trip. I just don't find it as entertaining, as when I am scooting around town, shifting, and making it crackle and pop. And with the supercharger, that crackle and pop is much more aggressive. But in touring mode, nobody knows what I got.

The factory tires really suck. Which I did not realize until I changed them. I got the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. This tire makes an order of magnitude difference. My car is Whipple supercharged with 680 crank / 580 RWH! With the original tires wet traction was awful. It now handles in the wet almost as good as the factory tires in the dry. And dry traction is ridiculous. And they are smoother and quieter than factory. I take it to Roebling Road for track days. All my coaches have been impressed. 145 on the straight. With the new Michelins it really sticks. When I come off the track the tires are sticky like those sticky pads you use to stick your phone to the dash. You have to peel your fingers off them. BTW, it does have an intake noise enhancer that feeds noise to the cabin using a sound pipe. Purely mechanical. That was removed with the supercharger install. The nice part is, I can hear the exhaust better, and in touring it is even quieter.
@falko2904
@falko2904 6 лет назад
Forgot to mention, mine is a 2016 with the 6 speed manual. I get people looking in the car, at the shifter, at the pedals, and they are still surprised when I tell them it's a manual. I guess they just have it in their mind, that I am an older guy with a big sedan, so it must be automatic.The cheesy plastics aside, most people like the interior. I personally like the seats, and being a BIGGER sort of guy, I actually like that the side bolsters are not overly aggressive. It could be better for the track days, but for daily driving with enthusiasm, they are great!

The commodore is an australian well stablished sedan that underwent many improvements and refinements over its many years, being exported to many countries rebadged by GM. Every aspect has its own story like being RWD, weight perfectly distribution, suspension, brakes, transmission, engine, fuel consumption, safety and interior. Surely a piece of australian history and the pinnacle of their car making.

loved the review. I now own a 2014 ssv redline down under. This car brings out the inner child and I so love driving it. Most Australian roads are single lane, twisty that engage the driver. This is where this car was developed and refined. It was not designed as a mass market car, it was made to drive, it was made in the knowledge that this was going to be the last true blue Australian built, designed, home grown, automobile. I'm happy that we here down under have shared something a bit special. My last V8 was an LX torana back in the 80's so with the closure of GM Australia for purely economic reasons I had to have one. So happy I did. This car has a soul and every time I get behind the wheel I smile. If only GM had promoted this Australian built car we would have had many more years of cars build for drivers. Pity Ford Australia didn't have a go as well, we might have started something.

man, great review. thx so much. what a car! what a machine. it's the kind of car my father would've loved to drive when he was able to (American, manual transmission, sexy yet subtle looks, put the pedal down and make someone in a more expensive car next to you that only thinks he can drive look real stupid). if I only had the cash man. why are we as a country, as so-called driving enthusiasts, not out there buying cars like these and fighting to keep them in production? I was really sad to see the Dodge Viper go out of production, but at least that was around for years. this car never really got a chance. maybe GM should've touted that it had Apple Car Play or something. so sad.

I have one of these cars here in Australia. Great car, something that a lot of us will miss in the future considering we grew up with V8 fords and Holdens. My first car 50 years ago was a Chevrolet Impala. I went on to own four more Chevrolets in my life, and enjoyed the cars immensely. However, I have not driven Chevrolets for a long time. Why? They lost their look in my opinion. This 2017 Holden Chevy has the goods, no doubt. But it does not have the looks or build quality that I would prefer at this time in my life. I do think American cars are better now, but Germany and Japan still has America beat, the way I look at it.

I agree with you on many fronts like motor, LSD, 6mt. Very cool sport sedan however I didn't get one due to rear seats don't fold, weighs too much and bland styling. Pricing straddles between used F30 and E90 M3 and E39 M5 is an antique not suitable for DD. I think a STI limited at $39k without wing is a super fun option to hoon in. Has plenty of room for family, steering, shifter and brakes all feel great.

It probably wouldn't have made a lick of difference to Holden's survival if the SS sold well in the US. The 'Button Plan' had decided the fate of the Australian car industry many, many years ago. The best outcome good sales would have achieved is 'maybe' another year or two of production. :-/

Pretty sure the driving modes don't change the steering or throttle response.

You are incorrect, I am an owner. there is also rear brake based torque vectoring and launch control in certain modes.. there is actually 4 driving modes, this is straight out of the owners manual: Tour Sport Performance Track Tour has torque vectoring off, MRC at touring level, EPS (electric power steering) in Sport mode, Bi Modal Exhaust in Touring mode. Sport has TV off, MRC in Sport mode, EPS in sport, BiMoEx in Sport Performance has TV on, MRC in performance, EPS in Competitive mode, Bi Modal in Sport Track (is enabled by double tapping traction control button only) TCS is competitive, Stabilitrack is Competitive, Launch Control is On, Torque vectoring On, MRC is Track, EPS competitive, Accelerator pedal is Track and Bi Modal is Sport. my.chevrolet.com/content/dam/gmownercenter/gmna/dynamic/manuals/2017/Chevrolet/SS/Owner's%20Manual.pdf

Geers Tyresoil I have a 2015 manual. I know it has launch control and it doesn't have the bi-mode exhaust, so I'll just have to check my manual and see what it says about the steering.

@geerstyresoil3136 6 лет назад
Ty Brink yea, your 2015 has everything except the exhaust. I have a 2015 as well.

Geers Tyresoil so do you think you can feel a difference in the steering when you go from tour to performance or track?
@geerstyresoil3136
@geerstyresoil3136 6 лет назад
yea, the steering is heavier in performance and track only. the throttle tip in is changed only in track mode. the pedal feel is designed to feel heavier at speed so you can more accurately modulate the throttle on say a high speed sweeper at a track day event. there is actually more throttle tip-in at idle in the other 3 modes below track.

you see why aussies love holdens now aye well Australian holden because they know every so often its gonna make some noise and a little bit of smoke but they also want it to be practical so you can daily it and it have no issues i own a 2001 VX s commodore with a 3.8L ecotech V6 but it will still make some noise and smoke if i want it to its got 400k miles on it on its second engine and gets thrashed every time its running but it still loves it it has no problem hitting limiter every so often it will happily do what you want it to do such a shame holden stopped producing cars in Australia but i guess its fine as bogans where buying commodores with the governments money and going out and burning rubber untill they run out of tires or fuel

I see GM is still putting that stupid ass "chrome" trim on the dash. Between 4-8 p.m. (depending on season) you have to drive one handed, covering the glare with your other hand. My Acadia has it so I scuffed it up with a scotch brite and made it look like brushed stainless instead of blinding chrome. Also, I put painters tape around it to not scuff the dash.

If many drove current auto's at the RPM's they drove manuals they would realize, automatics are faster! lol That is why most drag and strip racers choose automatics. They are faster! Manuals are fun for driving, not city, traffic but they suck otherwise. In traffic a manual is just 1-2-3 slowly then brake and back to 1. lol

I know it's a pain, but, if you do that little whooop with your finger, the video actually fast forwards. I recommend a good gym to get your finger in shape to pull it off without injury.
