2017 GSX-R1000 S2B: Episode 4 - Exhaust Installation and Theory (Part 3): Full Exhaust Systems

Brock's Performance

If OEM exhaust systems are so well engineered for their application, what can we do to improve upon their design? Once again, we are not smarter than they are, but we are also not playing by the same rules. They have VERY strict guidelines to follow. Why do they need to concentrate on low-end performance improvements so much? Is it because the performance robbing restrictions they are forced to put in place to control noise and emissions FORCE them to creatively compensate? If so, the real question is… can we do better?
A true motorcycle performance enthusiast’s dream come true! In this episode of ‘Stock to Brock’, Brock’s Performance owner, Brock Davidson, dives deep into the theory behind full exhaust system development for our 2017 GSX-R1000 project bike. Brock addresses looks, sound, weight reduction and answers the question, “Will we measure a true performance increase over stock?”
As usual, Brock does his best to try and tackle this very complicated subject, while making it as fun and enjoyable as possible for all experience levels.

Thanks @Alex Johnson - We do this type of development work for every Brock's performance exhaust we sell, and have for many years. Our biggest issue is that we don't have access to bikes early (like the bike guys) so we have to start product development after the bikes hit dealer floors - it takes us a little longer, but the wait is worth it.

You’ve made it simple for a lot of guys that don’t know anything about exhaust systems. It also takes a real technician to admit when they are wrong. Brock’s is the best street exhaust system. Best sound ever!!!!!

Outstanding Brock. All that hard work, and video editing, people have no idea. The sound of the Alien Head 2 exhaust was beastly, an experience in of itself, wow! 190-195 hp range with huge torque after tuning with the Alien Head 2 on pump gas. So we probably have 190+ hp on pump gas for Predator Exhaust Titanium (road racing), 15 lbs less weight, and great sound. Suzuki nailed it, from stock to Brock, I love it. This bike is going to be amazing on the track, untouchable with the right rider, both road racing and drag! After watching this, I think I'm going to have to set my traction control 1 setting safer when all is bolted and dusted :-) Dang what a machine!! Nice Brock, very nice. It just keeps gettin' better.

Hello Brock, love your videos bro. My question to you is; I just bought a new 2017 250cc Formula sportbike; i love the design but, i,am a little worried that it maybe a little under power because i had a 600cc sportbike before and i,am afraid that i might have bought a bike thats going to be under power than what i,am used to. Can i do any power upgrades to enhanced the speed of my 250cc sportbike to my liking.

34hp holy shit. Hahaha thats a huge gain for a customer when comparing to out of the box. (Ecu flash obviously helps a lot) but seriously people were already comparing these and they were fast because of the way they produce their power in a very liner fashion. With a top end now to boot on it, it is going to be an absolute weapon.

Brock their was a day long long time ago back in 1980, my beast the H2 750 with Denco Chambers it was so dam loud that you couldn't hear the space shuttle, lol. Them were the days I would go to Lang Hindles garage watching him fabricating Headers for his KZ 900 along with KZ1000. Back in them days if you built it right you got big power out them pipes, but major pain in the ass jet remember Lang had large board from everything from pilot jet , air, jet,, but most important the needle jet shims just get it spot on. For top end performance I was the Ginny pig that would go on the highway have screaming every year till 4th cut the engine pull over side remove all 4 plugs just to see the colours. We've come a long way not only the nightmares of having them run well, but today pipes are built so well so much R&D goes into them. Mostly great weight savings nice sound. Yet to see a pipe give out over 20 HP like golden era of superbike. Brock I been trying to work on bikes from the triples no Suzuki's, lol, when things really heated up 80s big bore love that GS 1150, to real superbike days 1985 that the year we owe all this to that era. Great job Mr. Davidson love learning from you real have great gift even the squids can lean a thing or two from you. Cheers from 🇨🇦🇨🇦

I am going to need save a bit, it was with a little help from my Dad---who I care for, only reason I accepted his help, least I can work it off, but when I do save enough, Be sure I will definitely be Going From Stock to Brock. I mentioned your series to the salesman, got a big grin, found out that he races, has an '88 GSX-R750 looks really good in the pictures he showed me, says it is going from what it is now to Brock and more, I knew of the track up island (Vancouver Island) but he goes over to Washington State says there a Track on the Olympic Peninsula he goes regularly, has a great straightaway tells me can get up to full speed--(I always take with a grain of salt, am 50 not,.... :) but does sound good) Thank you for the reply I mean everything I say. Would you recommend the Zero weight Alisyn and Petron for the first change and thereafter??

Brock Davidson Hey, personally, I don't like the megaphone look, or the tapered look. I think Akrapovic exhaust probably looks the best. Cans have a good shape and sound amazing, but could be louder. I also like how they etched the name on the can on the R1. Nice clean look. I have an 07 10R, and would have bought the Racefit Growler if I didn't have to shave the swing arm, but I do like the undertail exhaust. Just my opinion, not bashing. Thanks for the in-depth videos.

Just stuck a full arrows titanium system on mine, bmc race filter, ecu flash and fueling work, got from 176 standard to just over 185 peak and 80 to 83 foot pounds of torque, but picked up nearly a 20bhp gain in the midrange, from 6k through to 12ķ and you can really notice it, the throttle response is like butter now, the engine had only just covered 1000 miles, so its going back in at 4k for another dyno session as it should of loosened up by then

"Less negative pressure", absolutely makes a huge difference, and how do I know this? I run a custom vacuum still, sometimes 1000 millibars below atmospheric pressure, and I can tell you even a 10 millibar variance can make a huge difference in the performance of the still, and we are talking about less negative pressure not positive pressure. Now while a still and gasoline combustion engine have a lot differences, the range of vacuum (pressure) in both is paramount to optimum performance.

Brock Davidson from the video we seen on 650 ib it looks like the Gsxr1000 rr cant compete with the the bmw 1000 r and the zx10 r and rr model .... so is it all hype ??? Or can it compete against the new 17 model bikes ???

@99gsxrboy - Please don't let 650Ib's slowness let you create a false impression of this bike. I LOVE the guy, but he is too big to be racing 1000's and, especially taking apples vs. oranges races. Our new gixxer is already producing power numbers equal to or better than most modern 1000's, and we still haven't tuned it yet or done any of the other things we do to make bikes 'race ready'. We will have this bike flying a soon as all of the parts and tuning capabilities are available.

Hi Broc, is there a difference between the sensors on european bikes? I heard most bikes don’t have O2 sensors in the USA. I hope you can help me with the following question: I have a 09 zx6r with a slip on pipe + link pipe. The headers are stock and the cat is still in. I want to install a bmc race filter. Now do i need to keep everything as it is or is a full system required? If so, would my bike run lean and bad if i don’t flash my ecu after full system install? Would it run lean from installing the bmc race filter alone? Thanks in advance! Best regards Donny from Holland

I can't wait until you are done so I can hv a baseline to build my 17 drag bike Are you going to do the pair block off plates and crank case block off plate? Also, is a Brocks clutch mod needed on this new 17?

I can't tell you enough how much I'm enjoying this "series". It's like waiting for a new episode of Game of Thrones, or The walking Dead. That exhaust sounds awesome!! If I were getting a 2017 GXS-R 1000R I'd seriously consider the full titanium exhaust. (plus full ecu flash etc etc. Hope you ship to australia). Atm I'm still in the '17 CBR1000 SP camp, though it is just about 50/50. lol. There will definitely be a new bike for me next year, so still have some time to make up my mind. Question, doesn't ECU tuning eliminate the need for a Power Commander?
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 7 лет назад
Thanks! Yes- a properly tuned fuel flash in the ECU can eliminate the need for a power commander. We will discuss this in detail in a later episode.

Hi Brock what would happen if I install a full system map with a slip on. The bike is a street triple 675R with a small catalyst
@BrockDavidson

As a general rule, full systems require more fuel for a proper tune. This extra fuel in the cat can eventually clog it up, as well as reducing its ability to control emissions. This FAQ might help you a bit also (it applies to most modern bikes, as well as your 675R: blog.brocksperformance.com/faq/do-i-need-a-pcv-when-installing-a-brocks-performance-exhaust-system/

Very good detailed video brock.. i can see your exhaust sales rising a bit during and after this series.... quick question how much heavier is the black stainless predator full system for this bike in comparison to the titanium one and is the internal diameter any different whatsoever being that the material thickness may be different?

Hey Mr. Brock I need a full exhaust for my bmw s1000rr 2018. I would prefer titanium over stainless if you have it. If you can give me some info on where to purchase your products I will definitely buy this system or one suitable for my make and model bike. Thanks man

Brock- is there an extended swingarm kit manufactured for a 2017 GSX-R 1000R? I'm wondering how far the rear speed wheel sensor will reach if possible. Thanks!!
@BrockDavidson

@Corey - yes, swingarms and bolt-on extensions are available. We make an extension harness to handle the sensor: brocksperformance.com/speed-sensor-extension-harness-14in-gsxr-1000-17-18-hayabusa-13-18/

Hi Brock, thank you for your really detailed explanation of the exhaust. My question is what would you say when i take out the catalyst from the original exhaust and drive with active exhaust valves, would the gixxer lose horse power in midrange or on the top? I am from Europe and wouldnt loose the sound emissions but would gain some power, so im thinking about this option.
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 5 лет назад
The gixxer has intitionally small diameter exhaust headpipes, you can remove the cataylist, but the headpipes will still prevent maximum peak power output, especially if the crossover valve is removed. I don't know if removing the catalyst will hamper or hurt midrange as the addional exhaust volume provided by the catalyst tends to help power output. If this helps answer your question.

Hey Brock, great video and info as everyone else has already stated. I thought you forgot about this series, I have been waiting and waiting even though I'm subscribed, I still was just your website and if to make sure I didn't miss a video. Come out with the next one quickly please lol! Since you say the drag strip is a great tool, will you test the alien head exhaust with flashed ecu and tuned against the predator exhaust flashed and tuned. Since they both make similar numbers without tuning, I'm curious to see how they perform in real world application. I don't know about any other but when I watch your videos, I take notes. There aren't too many motorcycle info vids that gives solid info like that out there that make me feel like I have to write down. Keep up the great work. I like the headers on the alien head but not the muffler so much. Do you have any plans to have different looking mufflers that will fit the different headers like the alien head and predator design? I personally think this would be a lucrative financial benefit for your company.

Thanks. FYI: a 20 minute vid can take 50+ man hours to produce - we would love to make them all day, but we wouldn't have time to actually work. Keep watching our GSX-R1000 product page for new items: www.brocksperformance.com/brocknm/templates/bpp1.aspx?articleid=831&zoneid=22

Hey brock I would appreciate some input on this subject. I am shooting for the most peak power on my bike. I have a brand new 2018 R1 and It comes stock with a titanium header. I have purchased a titanium 3/4 system from graves and will be installing it soon. In addition she will get sprint filter block off plates and flapper delete. So my question is there a huge gain with a header on the R1? The R1 has a nice titanium large diameter header so to me a 3/4 system seemed the right decision but lmk what you have found out with your testing on the Yamaha R1
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 5 лет назад
I can tell you It's tough to beat most OEM titanium front sections for peak power...but it is possible to match the peak power while producing measurable gains (+10 hp is possible) in the mid-range with a properly engineered aftermarket front section. Here is dyno chart that shows the potential mid-range gains, even though peak power is the same: blog.brocksperformance.com/brocknm/articlefiles/Landing_Page/3_ZX10R_Comparison_AH2_vs_Slipon_vs_Stock_Mid.jpg
@crossplane9894
@crossplane9894 5 лет назад
@@BrockDavidson so your saying that midrange was higher with a header conpared to a 3/4. But peak hp was the same? Have you done testing with the R1 stock header? I already purchased a 3/4 system

@Brock Davidson, Just one question. Your other exhaust (not the alien head 2) comes with the noise insert. Yoshimura Alpha T race full exhaust system comes with a similar looking baffle. Are you saying universally those things hurt peak power? I got into a fairly long argument with a guy dyno tuning my bike. (not an unhealthy argument, I respect his expertise but he wants me to pay an extra 300 dollars to redyno my bike because I didn't know it came with insert installed). He said these exhaust systems should not have baffles removed it will actually reduce peak power. Where as I was saying the opposite. Been awaiting a direct answer from Yoshimura as to why that full system comes with the insert installed.
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 5 лет назад
@William, there is a large difference between a noise reduction insert (NRD) and a baffle/muffler. The noise reduction insert is an intentional ( typically removable) restriction in the exhaust outlet designed to help eliminate noise. The NRD is inserted into the baffle (located inside the muffler) and YES this restriction hurts peak power. Consider it a 'restrictor plate' on the exhaust side of the engine. Removing the baffle is a different story: it would be like running our Alien Head or Predator, etc... with no muffler whatsoever. All Brock's Performance exhaust systems come with mapping to compensate for the use of a noise reduction insert, or without. Our ShortMeg's and Sidewinders can be run without the baffle installed, so we offer additional mapping for no baffle use when required. It's not uncommon for us to offer 3-6 maps for some bikes/pipe combinations. These maps are supplied at no charge with all Brock's Performance full exhaust systems. Of course, your dyno operator will charge you to create separate maps for various combinations.
