2018 / 2019 Audi Q7 2.0T Review and Comparison

Looking to spend a little less cash on your next Q7? There's a 2.0L turbo engine for that. It's down on power vs Audi's tried-and-true 3.0L V6 but I suspect that most shoppers that aren't interested in towing will find the 2.0L to be just fine. Does that make the Q7 the value luxury family hauler? Let's find out.

This is a more complete review than most I've seen. One thing that all reviewers have missed is that the glove box (which is air conditioned) has a single disc CD player, two SD card slots, and a USB port for additional personal media. None of this shows if you just pop the box open; you must lean over and observe the upper fixed portion of the glove box.

So great to hear you differentiate the driving dynamics of a vehicle with a solo driver verses with passengers/cargo on board. Few, automotive journalists do this.

Houssen Farhat +1 I got 2.0 premium plus too. It’s family car for me with 3 kids. We Drove hundreds miles with seven passengers on board from PA to TN for eclipse last year with big cargo storage attached to roof rail. It still has plenty power, very stable and comfortable. Only one complaint is no third row air vent.

ming zhang I’m planning to get the Audi Q7. I was debating between the 2.0 VS 3.0. I decided to keep the cost Low & go with 2.0T but upgrade to the premium plus package. I live in PA too near Philly . This would be our family vehicle . I was worried as in some forums people are recommending to go for 3.0. Good to hear your experiences 👍

A little surprised you didn’t compare it to the MDX in the end segment, since I know you kind of like the MDX. The MDX is more premium feeling than the Q60, and its top trims make for interesting overlap with the lower and mid tier Q7 trims.

@alliejr

I recall a similar situation with (previous gen mid-2000s) Volvo XC90 that was available with either an I5 or Yamaha V8. The I5 was a dog but the Yamaha V8 was fantastic. The I5 could barely muster 19 mpg over the long-run. My friend's V8 was 18 mpg over the long-run. I should have chosen the V8 (ha). I suspect that underpowering a heavy car is not going to give you better gas mileage. The power has to match the vehicle size.

I still prefer the 3.0 V6. I know that i am buying a family oriented car not a 911 turbo, so the driving dynamic and the overall handling is not going to be that much different then a 2.0 turbo with max capacity (7 passengers inside). However that extra 100hp can make a difference I guess
@MrHav1k

If the 2.0L doesn't get any better fuel economy, what's the damn point?? Price is lower sure, but once you're in the $50k+ range, a couple thousand isn't a big deal.

Better balanced handling and a quieter ride
@MrHav1k

The handling doesn't make a bit of difference since it's a damn big ass SUV, and the quieter ride is moot with all the sound deadening they put in these things.

the turbo hits its power band at lower rpm so it might have a sportier drive accelerating on twisties. That's all I can think of. And coming off their emissions scandal, Volkswagen is probably erring on the side of caution by lowballing the mileage numbers.

I do miss the refinement of the Audi, but my wife reminded me the "luxury" in the Odyssey was the generous amount of room inside. Thanks Alex for the review that everyone wanted to know about.

Why 2 t and 3 ? Think it’s quite clear in a few years the elec cars will be all over the place then these petrol cars better be low mpg. So if the 2t is suppose to be Low mpg but they fail to impress. The other point is ..... does the turbo small engine last. Heard Honda has problem. Will this one last a few years ?
@vishtux7
@vishtux7 6 лет назад
Just recently drove both Q7 2.0T and XC90 T6. The engine noise was the same in both because Volvo addressed the issue in current year models. I found XC90 to be more beautiful inside and out, more practical and family friendlier. Also, the optional B&W sound system killed Q7’s Bose (terrible). Safety systems were also much better and cheaper in XC90. Volvo was the winner!
@JBM425
@JBM425 Год назад
I have test-driven both the Q7 3.0 and XC90 T8. When the Volvo is in hybrid mode, that 2L super/turbo four was definitely louder than the 2.5L four in my Avalon Hybrid. The Q7 was smooth and quiet. Stereo aside, I prefer the Q7 for actual driving.
@tomdolgin5441
@tomdolgin5441 4 года назад
I agree with you Alex. I would get the XC90. They are just beautiful yet modern and sporty inside, BUT the only thing that worries me is the new 4-cylinder turbo T5. It makes me nervous in terms of reliability. I think most of it is Ford designed, still Fords reliability hasn’t been all that great. They should have stuck with the tried and true 2.5T 5-cylinder, updated it and made it better. Those were bulletproof. I love the Q7, but that engine is going to have serious problems in the long run, just like it does in every other VW/Audi product. Now they attach it to an even heavier car, the Q7? Too much strain on these small engines over time is not good, especially with 10k-15k mike oil change intervals!
@JBM425
@JBM425 Год назад
I have test-driven the 2017 Q7 with the 3.0 V6 and the 2016 XC90 T8 PHEV with the super/turbo 2L four. The 2L four sounded harsher and louder. Obviously in EV mode, it’s running on electric power, but in ICE mode I would much rather have the Audi than the Volvo.

Alex, how does this compare to a fully equipped Atlas? The Atlas tops out where the Audi begins. So a V6 equipped Atlas is the same price as a turbo 4 base Q7. Also, I'd be curious to get your thoughts on how using the infotainment in this with a scroll wheel compares to the touchscreen in the Atlas.

I just have to add to other comments on the same issue: What the hell is the point (not just seen in this instance) in having a more highly stressed smaller engine that gets the same fuel consumption as an engine which is a whole 1000cc bigger? Guess which one is going to last longer and be more refined to boot? Did I mention performance?
@aidanlee2871
@aidanlee2871 3 года назад
audi has to consider releasing the q7 with other markets in Europe and Asia, not only in the US. I live in hong kong and most of these q7s are equipped with the 2.0 engine rather than the 3.0. These are usually driven by middle class families who used to own toyota minivans and wanting to upgrade to a european SUV. One of the reasons why people choose the smaller engine is because of the price of the road tax. In Hong kong, the q7 falls in the 1.6 to 2.5l engine road tax bracket and costs around US$700 a year to tax. However, the 3.0 supercharged falls in the 2.6 to 3.5l engine road tax bracket and costs 40% more to tax. Even though fuel economy is basically the same for these two engines, the road tax makes a big difference for most consumers in Asia and also in Europe. In europe, 2.0l engines compared to 3.0 engines makes a huge difference in terms of taxing a vehicle. Lastly, because of the difference in the price of road tax, 2.0l engines tend to hold their value better than the 3.0l ones not only in hong kong, but also some countries in asia too.

Yeah with that thinking why not just get a 2018 Kia Sorento 😂... cheaper, same features... But wait they put that 15-20K into things like sound deadening, suspension, full time AWD setup with RWD bias, seat cushioning, infotainment speed. Soft touch plastics where your knees sit, and touch. Things TBH once you get used to these things as a daily driver, it’s hard to go back to the mainstream cars/suv’s that don’t have that kind of solidity in most aspects...

a better value? no, it costs more money and all of the features it offers over the atlas (which aren't many) are basically unnecessary luxury features. The Atlas is larger but the Q7 should feel more premium all around. I'd happily own either one of them ! Also, the 2.0t in the Audi has so much potential for big power with a tune and a few other mods where the V6 in the Atlas doesn't have much power or much potential.

In the real world 2.0T is more economical than 3.0T (by about 3-4mpg). Atlas is a cheap, loud pumped up Jetta with no torque. Once you get into things like sound deadening, suspension, seat cushioning or soft touch plastics you wouldn't want to go back.

People who are shopping for an SUV with this price don't give a DAMN about mpg. Their only concern is comfort and status along with style and technology and horsepower. MPG is not on their minds. Near $70,000 for a 2.0 liter turbo v4 is the reason why Audi is unable to sell that many Q7. Like the way Lexus does with its RX350. Shame on Audi

good review but safety - nothing on the traction control - I want to know if a I buy a car the TC actually works - why are car reviewers so scared to test this - reminds me of the emssions that everyone just believed

Pradeep Magan what? of course the traction control “works” and at the very least you have AWD. How is this a point of consideration?

Some prefer the classic 5 spoke style over the gaudy black/machine finished asymmetric wheels of today. Go Japanese if that's your thing.

The 2.0T is a good choice if you're not going to travel a lot. 3.0T if you're going to travel. By traveling it means going through mountain ranges n shit. You want that power!

2.0T has plenty of power and more improtantly - torque.

I'll take a half priced Traverse RS 2.0T for $37K. BLS, 360 surround camera, back up sensors, power liftgate, NAV, sat radio, is almost half the price of the Q7 Premium...AWD be damned. Faster than the Q7 and better hwy mpg.

Volvo has been killing the game lately with everything they make. I'd take just about anything they make now over the Germans.
@sic22l
@sic22l 6 лет назад
They're also killing themselves with reliability. Real world fuel economy isn't great either and the XC90's suspension can be pretty harsh at times.

TheHvk Enjoy your 4 cylinder just because of some subjective design. The Germans are better in everything else including reliability.
@MrHav1k

@kraenk12 I can't speak to the reliability of Volvo's twincharged engines since they're so new, but they'd really have to shit the bed big time to be worse than the Germans for reliability.

@TheHvk I don't think Audi has issues with their engines. BMW does.

Alex, I love your reviews! However, am I being crazy when I say, I hate the entire volkswagon group of car makers. Especially the ones involved in the dieselgate scandal...?

VW diesels were spewing tons of really dirty shit into the air for about a decade! All the while, making everyone believe in their efficient, "clean diesel". Why isn't everyone upset about this? I also hate GM for their ignition scandal where many people died because they didn't want to replace a 38 cent (iirc) part. And I'm also not a fan of Hyundai / Kia because they cheated on their MPG ratings. Can you name any other big violators in recent history? I'll hate them too. Why would you say I'm a hypocrite?

It kind off funny when the car can predict clashes but it dosent Have infrared to detect a human opening the door off ur car and getting in left or right look at the comercial it demonstrate everything the car can do but his wife snuk up on them so car is not secure for fam or children u buy it its a waist off 💰 if a human is not detected before opening door and car ask if u wish to open door or not for teck support on this car no good u will still be dubbed use ur mind field trip fam desert Disney land Cali and car dies assistant turns on. Car won't protect u from a stranger opening ur door. Might as well tell them here's my wallet!!! sorry 4 miss spelled words was in a rush

As an owner of the XC90 T5... This is a spot on assessment. Engine noise sucks, but otherwise everything else is awesome. Especially fuel economy. No idea why Audi tuned this 2.0T powertrain so aggressively... Families don't care for 0-60 times.

Mainstream vehicles are of course close to my heart, but remember that around 13% of all cars sold in America are luxury brand vehicles and need to be covered. I generally try to get models like this Q7 2.0 rather than the more expensive but less popular 3.0T model.
