2018 Boston Marathon: Year of the Wicked Pissah

Put on your poncho and goggles for an epic journey from Hopkinton to Boylston for Chris' 20th Boston finish and my 10th in driving rain, cold temps and a 25 mph headwind. It was awful. And I would do it again in a heartbeat. Many thanks to the volunteers and everyone else out enduring this wicked pissah . . . you were the only tailwind we experienced all day. And that made all the difference.

Eric, you nailed it, absolutely nailed it! And with poetry, pride, feeling, and fun. I've run Boston every year since 2002 and, like you, I've never seen a day anything like that Monday we ran in 2018. When I was riding on the bus in the convoys out to Hopkinton the mood was subdued, to say the least, and I thought, "this must be what it was like in the Higgins boats getting ready to land at Normandy!" Man it was grim! Then I consoled myself that at least when they open the door there won't be anyone shooting at us.... I had 5 layers, two of them plastic! But somehow we made it. I just ran station to station, one mile at a time. I'm 148 pounds so I was seriously worried about not just ending up in a medical tent but maybe worse. I ran solo for the most part and it was a matter of survival. I was so intent on just finishing without ending up in the E.R. that I didn't realize until hours later that I'd actually re-qualified . . . by 53 seconds! Ran 3:29:07. Just crazy. No matter what Boston throws at us I don't think it could ever be as hard as that day. But at least we were running; the spectators standing out in that icy cold deluge--wow, isn't Boston just grand? Beautiful video, Eric. You and your pal Chris are the kinds of runners who make Boston so unique, so pure, so very much worth coming back for year after year. Maybe we'll cross paths in September when Boston may rise up to yet another unprecedented challenge. We'll see. Best of luck training and everything else, pal.

Thanks, Patrick! You ran an incredible race on the toughest of days, congrats! Hope to do it again in September. I just finished a 245-mile FKT on the Katy Trail in Missouri this past weekend so I've got a little retooling to do to transition from distance to speed. Take care and I hope we cross paths.

I ran Boston that year for charity. I have never been so happy to be indoors before a race. The worst weather I have ever run in and I have run in -20 degrees. But I agree with you, running that race was epic and like a badge of courage. It wasn’t my fastest marathon but I consider it my most mentally tough race ever.

Boston 2018 was my first and likely only Boston. I enjoyed your video. It captured the feeling pretty well. I was miserable. My strategy was just to NOT STOP for any reason. I knew the hyperthermia would set in. Thank you for posting.

I was there my friend. It was my 5th World Marathon Major. It was a brilliant experience especially in that weather. To be honest the weather really made it for me because it was so epic, so abnormal. We will talk about it for years to come. When I run now and the weather is bad I laugh to myself and say " I've run a marathon in worse!!" best wishes from Belfast Ireland, 🇮🇪🏃🍀💚

Yes, it was hard to do anything except keep moving forward and laugh at what the gods had thrown at us. All the best to you from St. Louis!

What a day and race for all who were there! I just recently saw the highlights on RU-vid and realized what a challenge it was considering the conditions....let alone the course and competition. That was brutal...I still can't comprehend how Yuki ran in shorts and a tank top. Super-human effort. And he had to carry a piano from the 5K marker on ;) LOL! What a finish. I can't believe NBC missed the coverage of him passing Kirui at the end. Ouch. As someone who has experienced a few marathons and also been part of videotaping The Warwick, NY Marathons (1994-1996 - New York Marathon overflow race) I have seen and felt the ups and downs of this athletic endeavor. You must be very proud to be part of the 2018 Boston Marathon adventure. Nice job with the video and narration. What memories! Congrats to all!...Great job Boston!

Thank you for sharing this! I am honored to have shared the course with you. It looks like we ran around each other until somewhere near Wellesley (I stopped to change gloves). It was my first Boston and I was in awe of the support. You were right when you talked about the crowds being our partners in this race, they helped carry us from start to finish.

Wow - like others commenting here, 2018 was my first Boston and you truly captured the challenge we all faced that day. I was in tears watching this as it was the first time I really took pride in my accomplishment of finishing. It had been so disappointing how hard that run was after how prepared I felt leading up to the day. Thank you. I'll be back next year.

I've only had what I would consider two really good runs at Boston out of 10 attempts. This year was a slow one, but it is one in which many of us will probably take the most pride.
