2020 Ford Fiesta Trend EcoBoost IN-Depth Review: It's Got The Engine It Deserves!

Hello guys, and welcome back to Car Obsession. Last year I tested the new Ford Fiesta Trend, and at the time it was only available with the 1.1 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. It's not a bad engine per se, but there was a large part of me that was crying out for the award-winning 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine.
It seems as if Ford agree, and now the Blue Oval has decided to offer its new base model with a version of the EcoBoost as well as a 1.5 litre diesel aswell. The EcoBoost in question offers just 95hp, and on paper it looks rather sluggish as it takes almost 14 seconds to crawl 62mph, so does that mean the Trend lacks the 'fizz' that its stablemates have become well known for? Watch this review to find out.

Nice review! I just got the 2020 Fiesta Titanium 1,0 Ecoboost with 95 BHP. It does not feel any bit slower than the 2017 100 BHP which my brother drives. The new Fiesta Titanium has a sport -mode. The engine reacts super quick in that setting. It feels nippy and with the superb handling and tight steering you can have quite a bit of fun with it.

@@CarObsession I think it does the 0-100 km/60 mph way quicker than 13,8 seconds. The official Ford-specification says 10,5 seconds and a topspeed of 114 mph/183 km. It feels definitely faster than my old C-Max 1.8 with 120 BHP.

Excellent review! I like how you made the subscribe notification not too intrusive. I'd slightly lower the volume of the clicking sound effect, but that's a minor complaint. To those of you that are willing to sacrifice that new car smell, you can wait a few years and buy a low-mileage car for a whole lot less. Rental companies tend to buy the cheapest Fiesta possible with decent equipment, and get rid of them with low mileages (because people want the newest stuff). That's what I ended up doing (Mk7,5).

Also known as "Ecoboom" because the "wet" driving belts have a bad reputation for breaking(even after just four years) and destroying the engine. It's vital that the oil is changed regularly, probably every year year, and that the Ford-specified oil is used.

@@MegaVector2011surely it wouldn’t make a difference where they’re built? Yes it’s probably better quality control and craftsmanship but the design of the engine and components would be the same

Looking at new cars and I’ve found a 2017 ‘67 plate Zetec example (same face lifted body) with the 1.0 EcoBoost engine that’s within my budget and seems to come with a lot of the kit as standard. I’m definitely intrigued by the new engine technology. I was always dubious that the smaller the engine size, the less the power - but as you’ve demonstrated that isn’t so much the case any more. I currently drive a 2013 VW Polo which is a 1.2 60 PS which has a similar speed and MPG. I’d be curious to know what the Fiesta EcoBoost engine is like on countryside roads/hills vs urban/town-city driving - I do a lot of both! Also how much is the annual tax? I am also dubious about the space in the back. In my 5 door Polo the space is quite generous, I like you am 6ft tall but passengers always praise the space in the back of my car. Is it notably cramped? Unfortunately I won’t be buying at the moment as I’d really want a test drive before I commit to spending - damned coronavirus! When showrooms can re open again I’ll be getting out to have a look, but thanks all the same for an honest review.
@CarObsession
@CarObsession 3 года назад
Hi Sam, thanks for watching. The annual road tax (or VED) is £140 per year. I've not reviewed a Polo of your age, so difficult to draw any comparison on rear space. I do work in a German car repair garage so I'm sure I have driven that generation Polo but never needed to sit in the back. I wouldn't say the Fiesta is *overly* cramped but it definitely falls behind cars such as the SEAT Ibiza and the current VW Polo. Hope that helps.
@BN-cf8gk
@BN-cf8gk 3 года назад
Curious what mpg you're getting in the polo. The small turbo engines are miles off the stated MPG. I have the higher output zetec S 5speed. I would say 40mpg is optimistic. The car spends most of its life on motorway and the lack of fifth gear in the old car does kill economy. My old diesel fiesta Mk6.5 did late 50's all the way. With lockdown I'm getting 32-36 mpg. That's with stop start off and starting the car early and letting it idle with the doors locked (I know that's not that efficient but needs must!). Saying that I love the car immensely, for the low milage (5000) I do it's the best comprise available, no other car will be so enjoyable for the money. I have access to a lot of luxury cars for work and it's genuinely no hardship getting into the fiesta. I knew the sacrifice in economy was there but otherwise the running costs are that of any other supermini, but with 140hp on tap. I'd buy another. If my milage increased I might actually look at an ST!

Am I missing something here? Did Ford replace the 100bhp ecoboost that did the 0-62 sprint in 10.4 seconds with a 95bhp version that does it 3.4 seconds slower? That doesn't make sense.
@CarObsession
@CarObsession 4 года назад
Hi David, thanks for watching. Could it possibly be down to the torque perhaps? Granted, I doubt it's going to be a big enough difference to cause that gap in 0-62, but I'm just throwing it out there. Also, perhaps the slower time is 0-62 and the faster time is actually 0-60. Again, it wouldn't cause THAT much of a gap, but it could be a factor.
@davidthompson4346
@davidthompson4346 4 года назад
@@CarObsession The torque remains the same at 170nm. The emissions however are lower now I noticed. Maybe they've detuned the engine for that and so that consumption can be lowered. As an owner of the 100bhp version I can tell you it is many things, frugal however it is not, especially in city driving.

If Ford brings the Fiesta hatchback with the manual transmission back to America, I'm going to buy it for my next car! If not, I'll have to search for a used previous generation model with the 5-speed or an ST w/ 6-speed. Can you contact Ford customer service and tell them their American customers want the Fiesta and Focus hatchbacks with manual and auto options to return to our market? Thank you! Great review, as always a real pleasure listening to and watching your work.

Oh blimey, you're really testing my memory as this video was produced a few years ago. I do believe it would have hill start assist, but don't quote me. Thanks for watching.

I know its a bit different specs,but how would you compare Suzuki Swift Sport with Fiesta(with 125 HP)? Let`s say driving pleasure, comfort and as a daily drive.
@CarObsession
@CarObsession 4 года назад
Good question. The Fiesta feels more refined and more grown up, but you simply cannot argue with the amount of kit that the Swift Sport comes with as standard. I'd say the Swift Sport feels a bit lighter and agile (I don't know the official kerbweights of the top off my head). The Fiesta feels a bit more grippy and assured in the corners, though. I'd argue the Fiesta is more comfortable and it has a bigger boot, so it will probably be easier to live with. Thanks for watching.

I am thinking about Seat Ibiza and Corsa too. I did a short drive test in Swift Sport. I liked punchy engine, but it wasn`t very refined car after all. Never drove Fiesta, but tried Focus with 125 HP. Was very comfortable, but engine lacked a bit of power.I think 1.0TSI engine in VW feel much torquer .
