Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. This 2021 Toyota Sienna is one of them. The 2021 Sienna is an all-new minivan that competes with the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Pacifica. In this video, me, my wife, and our daughter test the 2021 Toyota Sienna to review its positives and negatives from a family perspective.

Minivans have morphed into luxury cars with very spacious trunks. They are the most useful vehicle most people can buy, and now with hybrid and AWD options they are simply excellent vehicles. Time to stop the minivan shaming!

I dont have a family. No wife no kids but i still bought a sienna. I bought it because it's very roomy and very comfortable to drive. It's a perfect vehicle for long distance road trips. I have gone on many adventures with my van. There's even enough room to eat and sleep in. I love it!

I am surprised not one reviewer mentioned why Toyota decided to make the 2nd row not removable. While the Pacifica has the stow-n-go (but not the hybrid) and Honda offered the option, Toyota decided safety is more important to parents, so they installed side impact airbags to the seats. Toyota thought about making the 2nd row removable by having the option of unplugging/plugging in the electrical connection to the side impact airbags, but opted not to for liability issues. So they decided to have the side airbags plugged in permanently, that's why the 2nd row isn't removable.
@MicahMuzio

That is an excellent remark! I wish I'd noted it in the video. Thanks for adding context here in the comments!

They are actually removable with a little effort and do unplug fairly easily. No, Toyota doesn’t advertise this. There are actually a couple of videos up already showing the process.

I think what makes them not removable is the extra-long and ottoman feature, which is also new to the second row? But I don’t know for sure
@plmn93

Every minivan has side impact bags and has for some time. Toyota needed to have theirs in the seats because of how they slide back and forth, which I find to be a gimmick and much less useful than removeable or stowable seats.

I love minivan's. Had a 2004 Sienna XLE limited for years. Loved it so much. I think Sienna has rewrote the minivan this year and Honda, Kia and Chrysler will need a lot to do to catch up. The hybrid is a game changer and such a win. I'm not a fan of not removing the middle seats. People buy minivans for multiple reasons, not just moving people. Also not a fan of kicking your feet under the back to open it. I mean in a video looks cool, but let's say you got a handful of baby or groceries, do you want to do the hokey pokey on a patch of ice? I think the Kia has the best way of opening the back door. Just stand next to it and within 3 seconds, it opens. Last, and I am not a fan of not putting spare tires in cars. I mean we have insurance for our cars for emergency reasons, and tires are just that. These car manufacturers are putting so much safety in cars and take away spare tires? Silliness. But love this car.

Love the aggressive styling of the new Sienna! Similar to new Camrys. Toyotas have been looking really good these past few years! I typically always liked Honda's styling over Toyota's up until 2017. From 2017+ i have been really liking Toyota's designs over Honda's. But for me personally Toyota's BIGGEST success in the redesigned 2019+ Corolla Hatch. I drove the 2021 Sienna last week. Was I disappointed!! I too felt the interior materials (vinyl doors are cheap looking) The leather looked cheap also. I was so disappointed in the total interior quality. Then I drove the Sienna. Boy is that hybrid motor was way too load for my liking. Soooo I bought a 2020 Toyota Sienna Limited.. It's interior was much nicer than the cheap 2021. Of course it also has a 6 cylinder engine which is great. Save your money and get a 2020 Sienna.

Really this lags significantly behind the competition in nearly all areas...except offering 35 MPG with AWD. That's pretty dang impressive and makes up for an awful lot of shortcomings, IMO. Families evidently agree as this is now the #1 selling minivan and it's nearly impossible to buy. My local dealers are asking $5K over MSRP and estimate more than a year wait...which is ridiculous and defeats the economic benefit from the better efficiency.

We are expecting baby #4 (surprise!), the older 3 are 15 and up, so we are pretty much forced into a minivan. DH only wants a hybrid, I only want AWD, so the only vehicle you can have both in the same vehicle this year is the 2021 Sienna. (Pacifica is one or the other, can’t have both). We had a highlander hybrid when the older kids were little and getting in and out of the rear was a pain. There’s no 3rd row SUV that can handle 15 year old twin boys plus everyone else and car seat/stroller stuff. We went with a platinum because we were having trouble getting a hold of a limited w/ AWD. We had to drive out of state to get the one we got. I’m not mad about the platinum trim, DH really likes the HUD and I like the birds eye camera. I’m not a big fan of the chocolate leather that is your only option in the platinum, but that’s mostly aesthetic. Toyota did implement cost saving measures in some strange places. There’s no lumbar support in the front passenger side, which being >30 weeks pregnant, I’m bitterly missing. I think that some of the cheaper materials will be easier to clean, but it does initially feel a bit disappointing. The seats are very comfortable, the kids are very happy with that. They also love the HDMI inputs in the entertainment system so they can plug in game systems and play. It handles well, plenty of off the line pep thanks to the hybrid, and with all 5.5 of us in the car, still had plenty of pick up to get around semis on the interstate. We had been using an inherited 2013 Chrysler T&C that was pretty loaded. In the few years we had it, we had only used the S&G 2nd row 3 or 4 times. We are in an area where winters are harsh, and AWD is a much bigger deal than the S&G/removable seats, but obviously that is going to vary from family to family. The T&C also has not been very reliable, whereas DH’s 2013 prius has been rock solid. I feel like there’s no such thing as the perfect car, but the Sienna was really the only one that met all our prioritized wants that’s available now. I think now is a great time to be looking for a minivan, the advances are great and it seems like there’s something available for almost every family’s needs now. Happy shopping and hoping for a better year for all.
@jamespark6610
@jamespark6610 3 года назад
I'm late to the party, but what about the 1500W outlet(s)? And the HDMI input for the rear entertainment? Bring a microwave or an airfryer or a pressure cooker. Keep food cold in a plug-in cooler (or use the built-in cooler). Plug in a gaming laptop with 2 bluetooth controllers, and the people in the back can play video games on the move or while you wait for your air fryer to cook up fresh hot wings and fries. If it is used for work, it'll be the perfect "packed lunch" vehicle. Or "budget" road trip: stop by grocery stores to get those instant cook meals/food and cook them at the pit-stops.

Not a fan of the bridge console. My parents have it in the Prius and it works fine there but the minivan is about versatility. I have a 8 seater odyssey and if I do put 8 people in there for a long drive I like the Odyssey’s ability to remove the center console and keep it in the garage. This allowed for more leg room for the middle row center passenger and I actually still fit an extra carryon size bag in that gap. I love the open roominess of the front row. Can you do a review of the Metris and Sedona? Doug Demuro did one but he's unqualified because he doesn't have a family and a picky wife.

The highest trim doesn't have powered third-row seat collapse? It's not even a feature I care a ton about, but it's almost standard on top trims of any minivan.
