2022 Low Rider ST Upgrade - S&S Stealth Air Stinger

I am installing the S&S Stealth Air Stinger Air Cleaner Teardrop Kit on my 2022 Low Rider ST. I originally had installed the Vance & Hines limited V02 America edition, but it kept leaking oil all over my engine and pipes.
Vance & Hines did a great job trying to fix the issue but after two weeks of parts back and forth it was time to move to something else. Did it fix my problem? We shall see...

Did you install a tuner after or doesn't need it with this one? Looks great. I got ne from the Arlen Ness site that's called Rough Crafts Finned Air Cleaner that's kinda similar.

Thanks for the comments, I did not. I run it as is, which seems to run fine. But I will do a tuner at some point to improve response. Ride Safe

I appreciate the videos. Thanks. Just wanted to mention when I bought my lowrider ST last year mine was doing the exact same thing but much worse. I Got 15 miles on it before it was covered in oil from the air filter which caused it to smoke really bad constantly. They had to rebuild the top end of my motor with 15 miles on it. Then it did it again after being rebuilt. It was a nightmare. They had to buy the bike back and I had to order another one and had to wait all over again. My second one has been great with no issues and I love the bike. But I’ve actually seen a handful of people now, including the thrashin guys have issues with the motor on the ST. Just wanted to mention it. Might be something to keep an eye on.

Hey John, thank you very much for that feedback! I am hoping that is not the case, but, if it is, at least there was a path to getting a well running bike to you. And boy, you are not kidding, this thing gushed all over me and everything as well. I will keep everyone posted and see where it goes. Just an update if you are not following my Instagram as well, they have taken the same path as yours with the rebuild of the top end, and it still leaks... Seems mine is taking the same path as yours did... Now just waiting on next steps from the Harley mothership, more to come...

They thought it was bad cylinders/pistons at first. But the re build didn’t fix it. I was lucky that it was new enough they had to buy it back after 30 days. Hope they figure it out for ya.

Thanks for the question, as mentioned in the video, there is no need for a tune with this Air Cleaner since the bike already comes stock with a high volume breather. Ride Safe

The oil is coming from the crankcase breather system. It comes from the downstroke of the pistons and then is routed to the top of the head and out the bolts you installed tubes on. If you have heard of oil catch cans on cars, its the same situation. Basically all vehicles do this and that vance and hines system wasnt sucking all of the oil in effeciently. My thoughts though, why do you want hot oil vapor going into your combustion chamber? Its not a two stroke, your are going to lose horse power by porting hot oily air into your intake and build carbon on your piston heads. Just suck it up and get a catch can or vent it down onto the road.

Thanks for the comments. No sucking up or catch can needed, it was a defective cylinder and piston build. Vance and Hines was fine, so was the S&S. Check out the other videos and updates (along with the comments) on this to see what all was needed to be done by HD to fix it. Many LRST riders have been seeing this issue. Ride safe

Seems that after replacing the forward controls, with Heritage Classic ones, breather is still a problem after the dealer telling me it’ll solve the problem.

On my heritage, I have the stock fwd controls and a Vance & Hines breather. No issues at all and plenty of room. That was the motivation for the LRST upgrade and it works great!

I hate that the factory air cleaner doesn’t give me room to use the front crash bar for highway pegs. Does this give you more room ?

It absolutely did, cut off 4 inches of girth and gave way more room.

Hey brother, so I’m back with my breather problem and I tend to go with S&S. Now since I have Tab Performance slip ons, they say I need a tuner. Did you put one on and which one? Thanks

I did not. My low rider (2022) did not have any issues. You will see a more balanced band once you do, but the bike does not run lean or have issues as of now.

As a lowly amateur I'm curious whether that amount of oil leaking isn't a sign of some engine problem (assuming you're keeping your oil levels in check). Otherwise I hope the breather system works out with the new cleaner. I really like that classic tear drop design.

Thanks for the comments Andrew! All comments are welcome, at any time :-). I agree 100%, levels are good and keeping a close eye for sure. Common consensus so far from those I have inquired to is that engines are unique, as with any vehicle, and that this could just be a one off situation where the engine breaths a little more freely. If it saturates this setup with the smaller channels and less direct oil path, then it is in to the dealer we go. Others have indicated that with some air cleaners, they have a reservoir to catch the excess until it dissipates naturally. The filter design on the S&S has a small collection lip that seems to offer some of that function. Time will tell. Appreciate the feedback, ride safe.

@@justkillnbugz Sure! Barring big engine troubles, from what I can gather venting the transmission top cover is likely the best option for such issues or just peace of mind. That's either with the pricey Trask CheckM8 or a DIY job (not too difficult). Lots of videos and forum posts out there in case it's news to you ;)

Great question, thank you. Yes, as with most high volume air cleaners you would need a rain sock to divert any rain from being sucked into the system. They are about $50.00 at various sites. I have not purchased one yet until I know this will fix my issue. But will if it does. Ride safe

Hi there, just got my ST and had the moustache engine guard installed. But noticed that i cannot use the right rubber step on the engine guard because of the stock air filter. I was wondering, as you have the moustache installed and te S&S filter, can you get your foot on the right rubber step?

Thanks for the question. I did a video of the install of my S&S so check that one out. It has the complete details of the install and the results, but in short, absolutely! about 4 inches improvement and looks killer on the bike. I have a playlist of all my LRST videos, worth a look. Thank you, sure. The S&S air stinger sticks out appx 3 1/4 inches from the top of the cylinder head at the furthest outward point. Hope that helps.

Love this channel and just had dealer install forward controls black, and have that same uncomfortable attempt to use the back break. Looks like I need to change the breather. Question is which one to go with after seeing you 2 videos on that. This is for a 22 Low Rider ST

Thank you, much appreciated. The black foot controls have a bogus brake lever. You may end up switching that out too to help get it over more, but it will be a personal preference. As for the air cleaners, both are very good and as one of my instagram posts covers, my oil issue does have anything to do with the air cleaners. For me, since I have had both on, I like the S&S tear drop design and the hint of color in the filters. Of course my “Mercia” V02s are very reliable and awesome as well for my veteran representation. I think the biggest thing will be what you like. You cannot lose with either one. Ride safe.

@@justkillnbugz thanks for replying. What do you recommend switching for the brake lever. Btw..it has no rubber and can be slippery if wet. I’m new on motorcycling so I learned from your video. Another member claims no issues with Screaming Eagle Ventilator. Another thing I learned with breathers is we have to tune it, which I have no idea what that is. Thank you

@@mariog3143 I am still looking at various brake levers myself so unfortunately I do not have a recommendation yet. And yes, no rubber for grip is not ideal for sure. Once I find one I will post it. On the air cleaner, no, you do not need a tune since you are going from one high flow air cleaner to another. The only time you need a tune is when you change your pipes out (not just adding mufflers) or do engine upgrade work. Air cleaners are a personal choice, and remember, my issue is NOT because of either air cleaner, I may have bad breather boxes which pushes too much oil in to the intake. Not an air cleaner issue.

Nice work! No tune on your bike correct? Any signs that she may be running lean? I have the same pipe but have been waiting to get a little closer to the 1k mile mark. The plan is to also do the S&S air cleaner. My concern was it running too lean without the tune.

Thanks, much appreciated. Correct, I have not tuned it since I added the pipe, but very minimal popping so far. Like barely ever. For the air cleaner, the LRSTs already come with a high flow scoop so it shouldn’t be any different with the S&S addition. No discoloration on the pipes and runs great as is. A tune is coming as soon as I can get there though. Ride safe.

Thanks for the question, feels great. Just as with the Vance and Hines air cleaner, there is about a four inch reduction compared to the stock. Gives you back a lot of room and looks sharp as well. Ride safe.

This is also a problem with the S&S teardrop. I called S&S. I was told they know about the dripping oil problem and to use a catch can. Total lack of engineering on S&S's part. You went for a little test ride and the air filter absorbed the oil. Ride it 500 miles and I bet it leaks.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. In my specific case, the oil leak was due to a defect on my bike. I did a couple more service videos explaining it but the cylinders were defective. I literally had oil running all down my bike. The stinger has been good for me so can’t complain but I do smell oil at times. I love the design and have not had a need for a catch can solution since the fix. Same for my V&H solutions on my other bikes. I would love to see Harley find a better way in engineering.
