Great review, honest and informative. Noticed you are slipping the clutch every shift. You only need to significantly slip the clutch from a stop. When moving, only need to use clutch to smooth out the shifts. When moving try releasing the clutch much faster when applying throttle for next gear. Thanks for making this video!
Just bought a new 2024 gr86 with 0 miles 3 days ago & I just hit 553 miles today! It’s such a fun car to drive and definitely has people turning their heads
I’m not quite sure, but I think I seen you once while driving in my dark blue GR86 premium. I flashed my lights (you were coming the opposite direction) and then you flashed your lights lol. Does that ring a bell?
Yes it does! I think we might be the only ones in the area. My buddy Chris has a brz in Plymouth, he is actually a full time RU-vidr “thetopher”. You might have seen his videos.
@@kingofmtakina4142 small world. Are you on Instagram? My handle there is mmalik1985 Feel free to connect. I do have some questions since you also have a Toyota. Local dealers here are terrible.
l too have 2023 WRX 6 speed. Car has enough power for everyday driving and my needs. Not loud angry, but for traveling l like it. keeping stock but need that carbon steering wheel
Curious what you do to make your 1 to 2 shift smooth in this car? I found that I have to add a bit more gas before lifting the clutch up, since the revs drop so fast. Sometimes I'll even do an upshift throttle blip...same for you?
@@MalikPhotography makes sense. I think I found by touching the gas slightly during the clutch release it slows down the rev drop enough for me to slip it a little less, but either way you almost have to slip it more than in other cars for a smooth shift it seems.
Would you say it’s a good car to actually learn manual on? I got my 2023 GR86 coming 6 speed, I’ve driven a manual camaro a few times and a couple of new BMW manuals but I don’t daily a manual
My personal opinion is that you can learn a manual on any car that you daily. This isn’t the most forgiving manual, you have to be gentle just at the right point in the clutch travel and if you aren’t it’ll be jerky. So sure with a 1000 miles you’ll get better, but at the beginning it may be jerky if you’re new to manuals. Even for me after 7000 miles if I’m not paying attention sometimes I end up slipping the clutch or releasing it too fast and it’s jerky.
Malik, thank you for your review video! What phone mount are you using and where are you plugging it in to get carplay? Can you provide a link for the phone mount? Thank you!
@@jayczyzyk9707 no they don’t lmao. the oil pan problem was blown out of proportion and thats bc they were tracking it daily. if you’re a regular schmegular person, you dont have to worry until 5000+ mileage and then a quick check would do.
@@MalikPhotography did you end up having rtv in the pick up tube? Toyota doesnt want to service mine till 7,500 miles, I may just have to get in well before that though.
Do you have any other daily driver cars or is this the only one? Still planning to buy one as my first car but the fuel mileage feels a little too expensive.
Actually I sold that car for a Miata 2023 RF. I do have a daily car and as a second car the Miata is more run. But if I was single and had to get one car only as a daily I’d probably go for this. My daily currently is the Elantra N.
I would say it would be comfortable if the roads are good, otherwise it’s just okay. Of course it’s not a luxury car by any means. But the seats themselves are pretty comfy.
@@MalikPhotography Thank you for responding! I am in a luxury car now, but I’m tired of luxury car costs and I want to grab a manual that will run for years and years before they all disappear.
@@morgandrives if you can get your hands on the new civic type R that seems to be much better for what you are looking for. Honestly for a car to keep for years and years and drive a lot, there may be better options. This car has a very specific use case, buy only if you want a very small low powered rwd manual that does well on corners.
@@MalikPhotography It would be more comfortable, more convenient, and more powerful, but I really don’t like fwd cars, and the R is much more expensive. It’s come to either keeping my car (2016 Audi A4 quattro 6spd manual) for as long as I can and praying it does not cost me a fortune in repairs and maintenance, or grabbing a new manual car before they all disappear. But what is there left that is awd or rwd and manual? The 86 and …. ?
@@morgandrives awd or rwd manual under 50k you got wrx, the v8 muscle cars, golf R, the Nissan Z, gr corolla, and that’s about it. Some of these go well above the 30k cost of the 86/brz, but around the 30k mark your only options for awd or rwd manual is wrx and 86/brz.
I just don’t have drinks when I drive this car, with how fast I turn not a good idea. There’s still cup holders in the middle but just not in the best position.
There is only the rtv sealant issue, there’s no gaskets. No official recall, many dealers are willing to drop the pan to check for rtv sealant in oil pick up tube at your cost.
I think I did a few times, having a camera on my face for the first time was throwing me off. The camera is sitting on my nose with a GoPro head mount and an extension arm. So most of my vision was blocked. I likely need to set it up better if I do this again.
@@MalikPhotography I’ve tried those too and they are terrible. I think the pro youtubers doing POV are wearing a bike helmet with the gopro mounted on it.
Even if your not tracking your car if the oil pump is not getting enough oil you will do long term damage to engine I seen one guy went to dealership and asked to pull oil pan they wanted 400 but when they dropped pan had silicone in pick up tube so it was covered
My plan is to get that done but I need to find a good dealer, however I’ve also heard many say that just clearing the silicone in the filter is not the solution since rtv is coming from other areas into the oil as well.
At around 7 min, you went from 6th gear to 3rd gear....WTF?! Why are you in 6th gear at 40 mph?! You did it earlier at around 1 min, 6th gear at 30 mph....why?!
Can I get the song in the intro please? Subscribed and liked, Thank you!! Edit: the only “issue” I’ve had with mine is the glovebox rattles, but that’s not a big issue, especially for the price of these cars.
Haven’t had any issues with glovebox yet. As for the song I wish I knew what it was, others have asked me. I literally saw it on an Instagram post. I think it was just a cover of a song. I screen shot recorded it and put it over the intro here.
You can, but the road/tire noise makes it not worth listening to. The audio quality isn’t the greatest in the first place, add loud road noise and tire noise and it’s just not comparable to put the radio or music on. You could do it, but not worth it for me personally.
@@MalikPhotography Mine is coming in october so this maybe ignorant. Either your hypersensitive or the audio is really that bad....Guess I will judge myself when I test drive. People talk about this yet never actually turn the radio on and do some type of decibel comparison. Also depends on what you consider "bad audio." Its subjective...if your coming from a bose sound system with 12 speaker audio then Im sure yes it will be "bad." Why would you buy a car and not use the audio system? I drive a lot of hwy but Im 1hr from the blue ridge parkway and 2hr's from the "dragon." So this will be perfect.
@@MalikPhotography Is it worth for the 10th Anniversary Edition? Its super rare but it costs more. What do you think of the resell value in the future? its 34k right now
Yea I briefly discussed that. It is rtv sealant that they used. It is blown out of proportion online but yea, in my case I’m just gonna eventually have my oil pan dropped to have it checked.
im thinking of getting one but im not a car guy so i dont know much, if anyone can explain What does this mean? Is it an expensive fix? Is it a major problem? Is it an often problem?
@@billyjones1873 expensive if the motor starves for oil and spins a rod bearing. Might never happen to most people but the excess rtv is basically caulk that can break off inside the engine where the halves/pans seal.
almost clicked away because of the music, very loud. good vid though, but don't wait around on a potential oil problem, thats the blood of your engine, protect your investment, get it checked.
Thanks for input, I’m not really a RU-vidr or a videographer. Just a regular gr86 owner, decided to spend some time making a video rather than typing stuff up. In terms of getting it checked our you need to find someone who really knows what they are doing to drop the oil pan. Toyota dealers here don’t even know what an 86 is… I don’t trust their techs. And asides from that they won’t even do it.
