Im considering buying one now, anything has change in a year? What about the maintenance cost? I know how to do some minor jobs, like change breaks and oil.

Ya, I think it's pretty obvious though. I mean, from a guesstimate standpoint, but I would have liked a little more concrete ideas.

True, I should have spent a couple minutes on this. My 987.1 Cayman S was far more expensive to maintain. 987.2 should be more reliable but still no comparison to a new Japanese car.

I have owned two 987.2 2.9L Caymans. Standard running costs aren't that bad, not all that different to a lot of other sports cars. Luckily I havn't had to do any major jobs done by a specialist or dealer yet.

Tires, Brakes and Oil prices should be fairly close, no specialized parts required for either vehicle. Obviously tracking a 12 year old car could require new suspension parts at some point versus a brand new car.

The reliability is another factor. No point of having track killer if it working right or too expensive to repair

I would tend to agree with you for the most part. But on the other hand, he does not seem to fully understand what a slip angle is. A slip angle has nothing to do the tail sliding out in an oversteer attitude and therefore having the traction control off is not really going to effect the slip angles one way or the other. Slip angels come about from the fact that the tread of the tire gets distorted as it travels through the contact patch due to the cornering forces acting upon it. If tires were made of a solid inflexible piece of rubber however then there would be no slip angle at all. In any case, once the wheels loose grip and start sliding this is not considered an increase in slip angle. And while we are on the subject, the term “drifting” also arose from a misunderstanding by people (first in Japan) of the racing term “drift” and it eventually just caught on. Drift is a term used to describe a condition in which the car is moving in a direction that is slightly different from the direction the wheels are pointing, although the wheels are still maintaining traction the whole time and are not actually sliding. In Formulae One back in the 70’s there was also a term known as “4-wheel drift”. It was a condition in which you could get the car to steer itself around a curve with the wheels pointed straight ahead. This only worked because the rear tires of the F-1 cars back then operated at much higher slip angles than the front and so the car was basically being steered by the slip angle of the rear tires. Of course today the term “drifting” has incorrectly come to refer to driving a car on asphalt in the same manner that you would normally drive it on a dirt track or in a rally (in an oversteer attitude). And while this is the fastest way to get around a dirt track it is only done on asphalt in order to entertain oneself rather than to get around the course quickly and as such it has no business be referred to as a “motorsport”.

yes love the 86/BRZs but you can't beat the driving feel of a mid-engine like a Cayman sports car cornering at close to or at the limit

Its one of the most beautiful sports cars with classic, timeless design. Everything else looks tacky.

I still don't like older models. 2012 and up looks great

@@spoonman73 I agree completely. I believe it’s the perfection of automotive styling, and I’m a person who values styling very low when it comes to cars. I cannot wait to get to own a Porsche one day, from the performance to the styling, they are the pinnacle of driving machines in my opinion.

I have owned both as well. They are incredible to drive in their own way. Can’t knock either car. I enjoy the Cayman’s body lines better and precise handling. It’s like flipping a coin heads or tails either won’t disappoint

Which is better? i have to say, I got to drive a Cayman S at Laguna for a few laps at a driving event and it felt dare I say just a little boring. Composure, grip and no drama. Test drive a used boxster and it felt the same, kinda too much grip for the engine, seemed I’d never have it out on the ragged edge. Can cars be too competent for their own good?

Big issue for me, is the Cayman has no LSD. Not even Cayman S's have LSD's... 86, it's standard equipment.

@@bliglum If you can find a Cayman R, they all have LSD (plus a whole host of other driver-focused improvements).

With modern tires, the 987 has more grip. Put a set of grippy tires, and there's very little cars that grip as much as boxster/cayman.

@@weed46 I have 4S's and they are pretty grippy. Another dragon photographer drove my Cayman and loved it so much he is selling his Fit and buying one. He's also faster than me, but only in the higher speed corners. I can take the low speed, or constant grip corners at 40-50, but the few that can be taken at full throttle at 60+ I tend to back out of.

Although subjective I had an 07 sti and can confirm my Boxster is more fun and satisfying to drive without question. I think the the GR86 is a great package and would own it over the 07 sti but they are kinda apples to oranges. Now if you test drove a Cayman or Boxster it might make you change your mind. Good luck both the Porsche and the GR86 are fun sports cars.

This is exactly what I’ve been saying forever. The interior of these cars has always been the deal breaker and it’s one of the reasons I sold my. So incredibly cheap. Understandably so, but still.

@@mainsera4407 i completely disaagree. The interior of the first and secon gen are certainly budget focused but they are designed excellently. Thrn again, Im bias toward older car interiors. The BRZ/86 is super simple, it uses knobs and buttons instead of makkng everything digital, its very clean and tidy in it's layout. It has everything you need but nothing you dont. And yeah, the materials are not fancy but they look and feel like budget materials should. They arent nice but also aren't like they came put of a super low dollar economy car.

@@Bones12x2 They can do both. Sit in an Audi A3, Civic Si, most any Hyundai or VW. The 86 downfall isn't kobs for climate control, it's all the hard plastics that make it look designed by fisher price. It'll still sell well because it drives so good, but there's clearly other people who will pass it up because they're willing to spend a little more for a more premium experience. Hell even a new forester has a better interior so you know that have the capability in house.

There's no way to make the four cylinder sound great. I like the exhaust I have on mine (it's got an "honest" 4-cyl sound to it at a good compromise sound level), but there's no way to make it sound horny in the way a six-cylinder can sound horny.

I own a 987.2 2.9L, previously owned a first gen BRZ and a tonne of other sports cars and hot hatches. That engine in that first gen was so horrible, I couldn't wait to get rid of it after a few months of ownership. This new car seems so much better.

My 987.2 S has an LSD factory - it was only a $700 option code 220

As a Cayman owner: you’ve hit the nail on the head. The Cayman is an incredibly enjoyable car, but the 987 is older. You’re gonna have more problems, whether it be window motors or door handles, or whatever odd piece may wear, and it’s gonna be an expensive fix. I’ve done my fair share of wrenching on it myself, and again, not fun. I think it’s a fantastic car to take to the track or for some weekend fun, but the BRZ/86 would 100% be more practical.

You need to drive faster, trust me it does break.

Both are great but I'd lean towards the M2C as a fun daily for its snappier transmission and added practicality.

@@Zygrene Thanks for the opinion. I have a friend that has a non comp M2 that I’ll try to get in, and hope I can get someone at a Toyota dealer let me test drive a Supra without having to have a check in the full amount with me lol.

Yes tyres make a massive difference. The Cayman has much wider and gripper tyres than the 86.

@@danparry834 I still think the Cayman is awesome, it just came down to price and availability. The Cayman had to clear more hurdles because I needed to be able to test drive it and get a PPI done. The few that met my preferences and showed up locally were either questionable or overpriced.

I'd estimate that the tires contribute 50% while the suspension differences make up the other 50%

Agreed. I’ve had mine for 8 months now. They completely transformed my car. Better in the corners and they ride absolutely beautifully, much better than stock.

While I agree that parts and labor will be at a higher price point for Porsches, a thing to consider is that those 12 year old porsches are at the bottom of their deppreciation. If you buy one and sell it 4-5 years later, you might sell it at the same price that you bought it or maybe even higher. Although new cars are great with warranty and everything, you'll sell the gr86 a lot less than what you paid for. Probably half. Thats 15-20k down the drain. Just something to think about.

Bore scoring seems to be over-hyped. I wouldn't worry about reliability too much with a 987.1 S as long as you aren't tracking the car hard.

stay away from the 987.1... still loving my 987.2 after 10 years, and planning to drive it into the ground.

Aw bro I cannot wait to hear that sound from inside the cabin. I love it in videos. That raspy howling gives me chills like no other NA engine does. (I got a hybrid turbo mk1 TT now.) I’m saving, and building credit, hoping in a year or 2 I can get a 987.2 cayman , or a 981 with the PDK. I’d rather the S, but even the base would be amazing for me. I’m only 23 and I weld for a living haha.

Stock setup, with the same tyres there's no beating physics. So I doubt it very much.

I have. It almost has no rev hang, which is a significant improvement over VA. The cabin feels quieter, and has way less turbo noise compared to VA (to me the turbo noise was a charm of VA). Shifter feel is slightly improved, but still sloppy and doesn't inspire confidence. Clutch feel hasn't changed much for me, but my friend who drives a VA feels the biting point is slightly higher, but in the end the clutch remains beginner unfriendly IMO.

Thank you. I test drove and MR2 with a 2zz engine upgrade. Fun car. However that car had such high mileage and a screwy carfax I passed on it. I’d like to drive one with the original engine.
