2024 Chevrolet Trax First Drive Review

Chevy’s new Trax doesn’t offer AWD, but it does offer a seriously low sticker price and excellent handling. The 137 HP engine has a surprisingly throaty growl, but it’s not terribly swift at 9.4 seconds to 60. The combination of features might not be right for everyone, but those looking for a solid daily driver will be pleasantly surprised.

Everyone keeps talking about horrible GM quality. GM actually has good reliability. I owned 3 Toyota’s over 20 years and they all had problems. My sister and aunt have Honda’s and they have problems. In 2015 I bought a Dodge Grand Caravan against everyone’s advice. It’s the best vehicle I have ever owned. My sisters 2015 CRV has been in for service multiple times a year. My Dodge has only been in for service 2 times. Both for a window regulator. My other sister has a Tahoe My brother , uncle and cousins all have Silverado’s. No major issues. The fact is most cars today are relatively reliable if you take care of them. Use good gas. Change the fluids on time and keep up with maintenance.

I bought one as my first car, a gift to myself for my 22nd birthday, and I absolutely love it. I have the LT model in the grey/silver color and got it for a great deal as it was cheaper than most other LT in my area. Drives very smooth through a city full of terrible pit holes. Acceleration is great especially when it comes to keeping up with traffic as most people here drive 10-15+ over the speed limit. I still don’t know how to feel about it turning off while at stop lights as I feel that it can lead to engine issues later down the line (that’s just me though). You can turn it off but I think it has to be turned off every time you get into the car and it doesn’t always kick in which I also find weird about the feature. Im 5’9/5’10 and I stand taller than the car itself yet it has a bunch of room and I don’t hit my head when getting into. I absolutely love that mines came with an 11” entertainment center and digital dash (didn’t think I was going to like the dash but I love it!). I also love that it came with push to start as some of the models don’t come with it lik the LS and 1RS trims. I’m a college student also so this was a great choice as I was able to keep my monthly payment low and take advantage of the college student promotion that Chevy has going on. They also have them for first responders military etc. Also at the time I was going Chevy was offering 120 days deferred with an APR of 6.99 but you have to have A+ credit to great it. It gets great gas mileage too! I started on a full tank on Friday (06/16) and have been running around everywhere since and am just now about to reach half a tank. You can’t beat 28-32 MPG! In all I love this small suv!

Its a decent hatchback for all intents and purposes and its priced right. The market needs more cars like this for commuters and people just starting out. I'm glad to see GM is trying to accommodate them. Not every working person can afford the average priced car that tops 50K. I'm really surprised at it having active noise cancellation and the ACTIV has 8 way power which would be great for my long legs. I'm seriously considering on of these.

Agreed. I can't believe the general public has been coerced into shopping for $40-50K priced cars anyway. What a financial strain on a budget, and let's face it, almost everyone is on a budget today! Most of that rise in pricing has to do with marketing to us the "need" for faster 0-60 times, combined with sexier appearances. That’s why it sucks that there’s no variety in reliability outside of the Japanese companies. There’s basically no competition because everyone else is so bad in reliability that it makes the Japanese do whatever they want with removing features and increasing prices. They know people will buy them because they are reliable, and everything else regardless of their additional features and lower costs will not be worth the long-term headaches for what they offer. Nice to see the platform as a FWD only to eliminate the AWD driveshaft tunnel and rear differential spacing. This allows for a spare tire & flat floor and lowers the center of gravity without having voids of space when choosing FWD on an AWD designed platform. I even sat in a Active w/sunroof and still had plenty of headroom. I also felt like the seatback has more bolstering than my Maverick, though the seats were a bit firmer; a plus compared to the feeling of those in the Maverick, too, which makes it almost too difficult to find comfortable spot in the seat. I'm by no means a huge Chevy fan, but I'll give credit where credit is due. They did a great job with the styling. I have no complaints. It looks extremely roomy for this class of vehicle. That big back seat will translate to a big cargo area with the seat folded. The power seems adequate. For me, it's the seat-of-the-pants feeling behind the wheel that matters in daily driving, not the numbers on paper. Alex seems to think it's peppy, so that's promising. Fuel economy is on par with other vehicles in this class. My only real concern is reliability. I think the Trax is engineered by GM Korea (formerly Daewoo). If so, the only American aspect of it seems to be the Chevy badge. My only real gripe is that Chevy is offering the Trax in some very unique paint colors, mint green, yellow, and baby blue (not the official color names), but those colors are only offered on the 1RS and 2RS trims, so they are paired with the RS's red interior trim. Thank you for the video! I am shopping in this price segment and comparing this to the 2023 Crosstrek and Civic Hatch. Both are available with a manual, which is a huge draw for me. Crosstrek has less cargo space, a big concern. It also does not have ACC or auto brake hold. Civic is perfect for me because it has more cargo space and ACC/auto brake hold are standard with manual gearbox. The new Trax is an intriguing option because for the same $26k you get far more equipment: sunroof, heated seats/steering wheel/mirrors, ACC, etc. I suspect the new Buick Envista will be even better in terms of style/comfort.

GM Korea did a great job on the new Trax. One of the few vehicles that you can get for under $25K that you would actually want. In my area they are hard to find though. We recently bought a Trailblazer. There were no Trax or Trailblazers on the local lots. We bought the Trailblazer in transit (had experience with it so went that way). I have a 21 Chevy Spark which I'm happy with. The dealer is bombarding me with offers to get even futher into debt in one of these. I will say I like most of what I'm seeing. My only concern is with the concept of an inadequately sized motor with a turbo to compensate. Unless they're extremely well engineered and built it sounds like a problem waiting to happen. I personaly don't care a fig for AWD. Unless you live in severe snow and ice conditions I can see no use for it. I'm in Phoenix so frankly the only essential to me is arctic air conditioning.

Thanks for the awesome review. I found it very informative. I drove the 1RS with sunroof option, for a day and loved it! A little background in me, I am a car guy with a little Italian sports car I keep in a garage to drive on sunny days and have restored a few cars in my younger days. I really like the styling of this vehicle and I also really like the way it drives. It is pretty quick off the line and has plenty of upper range passing power. The six-speed transmission shifts quickly and smoothly. I am so glad they went with a regular transmission over a crappy CVT. I have to disagree with the reviewer in that I think 6-speed is plenty for this vehicle. I drove it around the city and also on the freeway for a bit. It handles great too. I was actually pretty blown away by this little SUV because I sure wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. I am now actually considering buying a 2RS for my wife to replace her 2011 Volkswagen Golf TDI in that awesome light blue 🔵 color. The Golf TDI drives really well so for me to get away from a european-made car to one of these would be a big jump or so I thought before I took it for a ride. The 1RS that I drove was actually made in korea. I found the fit and finish to be quite nice. I do wish the sound quality of the stereo system was a tad it better though. I am a bit spoiled from the sound system in the Volkswagen TDI which sounds amazing. I work as a recording studio engineer and music producer. My wife doesn't really care much about sound systems and she definitely doesn't care about the way an engine sounds but with that being said, I really like the way the engine in this sounds, very sporty when you hammer the throttle and yes, I have a bit of a lead foot! It is a Chevy so I'm not sure how it will hold up over time but as a new car, I think it's a great deal for the price.
