Watching from the US. Was in Brazil last week week and seeing Hilux everywhere. Within the next 24 months, we're moving to Mexico and, while in Brazil, I was researching Hilux v Tacoma - I guess that's why you came into my feed. The plan is to drive to Ushuaia and back again to our home in Mexico. Excellent video, Tacoma's and Hilux are both obtainable in Mexico whereas only Tacoma is available in the US.

They may have not received one from the manufacturer yet, I have noticed recently that it has been taking longer for larger reviewing companies to get hold of a vehicle outside of controlled marketing days. It’s kind of like manufacturers don’t want to give media long periods of free range with their vehicles anymore, I wonder if they have cut their advertising budgets to some of these companies meaning they don’t have as much control over the review 🤷‍♂️ You only need to look at the new Mitsubishi Triton as a recent example, CarExpert has only recently released its review of it even though it’s been available to market for a little while now and the review definitely wasn’t afraid to pick on it at all. IMO the new Triton deserves the not so great review especially after all the media coverage about how Mitsubishi spent a lot of time in Australia learning the market audience so they can deliver a quality product and it seems they decided to stop 80% of the way in each aspect of the vehicle they delivered.

Sales rep just told me today that basically 48v system saves 0.5l/100km and has better response. 0.5l adds up over which seems worth it. Regardless in New Zealand it seems unless u want a manual, all autos are now 48v hybrids. Plus stop start probably will be great in Auckland traffic. Will save a ton of fuel sitting at the lights and while also be in complete silence. Im sold imo.

I recently hired a plug in hybrid wrangler during a trip to the USA. You can purchase a power bank adapter which plugs into the charger terminal and you can use it for camping power. However, I don't think they will bringing out the hybrid wrangler in oz anytime soon. And in Australia you don't need heated seats? Come on Ronny we don't all live in WA. It's usually -3 to 3 degrees in the outer skirts of Sydney and that's not nowhere near as cold as it gets in other parts.

I want manufacturers to offer either the ability to tap into the 48v system to use for camping or to do like Ford has done for the f150. Full hybrid that has a built in 7.2kw generator. Excellent review Ronny. I must say what was Toyota thinking, apart from a marketing point of view, in regards to that AC point with only 100 watts, which will be useless, because it’s only going to give a maximum output current of less than half an amp, 455mA. Also being inside the centre console will make it difficult to get to, when you have your stuff in it.

The term for vehicles like this is mild hybrid. Unlike a full hybeid it cant move the vehicle off from a stop without starting the engine, but it can chip in a bit with power and do regen breaking, unlike a stop start system. On running loads at 12v, a perk of getting it via dc system is that you get full power at idle (or just in ready mode.) My rx400h can do more than 2kW.

Thanks for the review. With the way that manufacturers are going towards PHEV and Hybrid's its a shame they don't incorporate ways of connecting to these massive battery systems for camping in the ever expanding overlanding segment of the market. The only ones I know of who do this are Jeep with the AUX switch system as an option. So no need for relays or anything as you can plug directly into 1 of 5 of the connections (4 switched, 1 accessories).

Will there still be manual options in these new models?

Yes, however the 48V system isn't available for any of the manual models

Nice review. Say the 48V system failed in the middle of a remote location, would the Engine still start??

You can say the same about a 12 V system.

@@user-vx7vi3vq1c I think I read somewhere, that if the 48V motor/generator fails, a good old classic starter will take over to start the Engine and get you home safely. But not sure about that.

I love my hilux but they really need to update their interior. A phone holder is a better update but seriously why haven’t they implemented wireless charging and many other things their competitors are doing We need ❄️ seats lol

Why is it called a 2.8 d4d? Is it an Australian version? Thought the D4d was only available in the old hilux with the new models being gd6's.

surprised to see there's still a 12v battery around... and a fairly big one at that... wonder how much higher the maintenance costs will be on that reinforced belt and HD alternator.

Have Toyota fixed the DAC control? It was woeful on our 120 Prado and just as bad on our 2015 model.

My 60 is a 24v model and I have to say, a 24v winch, air compressor, spotties are great. They draw half the amps a 12v system does. If the automotive industry move toward 48v we wont have to run stupidly thick cables for high current and voltage loss. If we look at locomotive applications, the diesel is used as a generator to power DC traction motors and power systems. I was wondering how and when this technology would end up in automotive applications, I was curious if semis would ever end up going the way of diesel loco power trains but it's probably too expensive and over complicated. In the Hilux, it's just used for what looks like easing the load on the engine to drive ancilleries and mechanical power is still all diesel.

My only concern is the battery because i've see many 4x4 get the interior flooded, just open the doors and they drive away not so sure this hilux can do this. I think toyota is doing this do satisfy whatever laws there are Australia but my guess is that serious off road people will delete that 48v system or convert back to a regular hilux or even relocate the battery system but i'll wait to see what the future of the unbreakable hilux will be.
