I was left emotionally-struck about human’s ability to destroy after experiencing Oppenheimer. After viewing Interstellar, I cried for about 15 minutes solid while reflecting on my children and fatherhood. The Nolan criticism that his films are emotional cold is so 2010.

Yeah, the TIFF People's Choice winner has been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars 11 years in a row, and 14 of the past 15 years. 5 of those won Best Picture. And in the past 10 years, 10 additional films that placed 2nd/3rd have also been nominated for Best Picture, with 3 of those winning Best Picture.

Great discussion, I would just like to point out that the Academy has a lot of international members now, so at least one slot would go to a non-English film, maybe Anatomy of a Fall
@poihpioakarp8845

My current GoldDerby predictions (as of 23.10): 10. Air 9. Bob Marley: One Love 8. The Color Purple 7. Barbie 6. Past Lives 5. Anatomy of a Fall 4. Poor Things 3. The Holdovers 2. Killers of the Flower Moon 1. Oppenheimer My top 7 are all pretty much locks in my mind. I find it inexplicable and baffling that the prediction community completely abandoned the Bob Marley movie, they're gonna give it a qualifying release for sure. As for the movies outside this list, American Fiction is my 11 easily, and it is what I'll put in for Best Picture and Best Actor in case the Bob Marley movie does gets taken off the slate. I think Maestro has no chance of getting nominations above the line, and it'll be content getting anything more than the seemingly inevitable Makeup & Hairstyling nomination. The Zone of Interest on the other hand, has no chances whatsoever of getting any nomination in any category besides International Film if it qualifies with that category's parameters (which I'm still not sure about). This leaves Anatomy of a Fall being the clear international above the line hit this year. When it comes to other movies that have a shot at Best Picture, it's actually not a lot of them. May December can become a thing once Netflix realises Maestro is dead in the water, but I'm not betting on it. I don't feel like the Academy has the balls to do the right thing and nominate Across the Spider Verse and John Wick: Chapter 4 like they should. Nyad is not a thing besides Jodie Foster, sorry to break it to you. Same for Rustin and Colman Domingo. Napoleon is The Last Duel all over again. The Killer and Saltburn aren't gonna sniff an above the line nomination. I'm not feeling All of Us Strangers. Really the more I'm looking at the field, the more I'm becoming confident in my faith in the Bob Marley movie.

A movie that has to be nominated for best picture is John Wick 4. An acting performance that must be nominated and is frontrunner is Joaquin Phoenix in Beau is Afraid. Plus Blackberry for picture, screenplay, acting and support acting. My money will be on Blackberry to win the Best Picture. It will be Blackberry versus KOFM. For best actor let us see if Murphy and Leonardo can challenge Phoenix. I am hoping Nic Cage gets nominated for Renfield. Best supporting actor. As William Dafeo for Inside. Best actor.

I truly believe Barbie is this year’s Top Gun Maverick. Being a blockbuster feels like a disadvantage for winning the Oscars or getting many big nominations. I do think Barbie is a better movie than TGM in general (TGM was so generic and predictable), but Barbie does have scenes of clear corporate meddling that show its purpose as a commercial, and I do think that hurts it a lot in award consideration. There are great moments. I honestly in general would not be upset with it getting a director nomination. The problem is most lists have Gerwig competing with Song for the last spot (Scorsese, Nolan, Lanthimos, and Triet seem smart bets, though I’m a little dubious of Triet after Anatomy was not selected for foreign language) and Song deserves (and needs) it so much more.
@daejangeum
@daejangeum 9 месяцев назад
No, TGM last 30min was a pure exhilarating crowd-pleaser gold whereas Barbie collapse and misfire in the last 30min. Being a predictable is not a flawed, how to make a predictable feel energetic is the key and TGM achieved that effortlessly.

Oppenheimer is not touchy-feely by any means, but it's certainly not "cold". It does engage with the human cores of its characters, just not in a rousing or heartwarming way. I'm not ruling out the possibility Oppenheimer's campaign can run into a pitfall down the line, but this certainly ain't it IMO.
