Me and five of my family members and friends have various forms of the TDI. They’ve all been solid and made multiple trips across the country with them.

@@just.a.realtor i mean that in a general statement. Examples such as my car having poor prior maintenance and such then a bunch of reddit posts about random oil pressure loss and gasket failures. Stuff that can be serviced at 100k
I don’t think it was the delete that caused anything. Goodluck on your next 50k miles. Since youve owned it early in its life it will probably last longer as long as you maintain it.
As a huge redblock Volvo fan and previous owner of a dozen or so Volvos and one 2011 VW Golf TDI 6mt with full deletes, cr170 turbo, CP3 hpfp, lowering springs, Bilsteins, etc. , I feel your pain. My Golf was problem free for 180k though, except for a mouse that decided to chew into the main wire harness. Anyhow, a smf should absolutely never be used on the 2L commonrail TDIs- it will damage the transmission synchros every single time. DMF only! Good luck brother.
That is a sad story. That's why on my TDI group everybody is wanting to buy the older ALH or BEW. I for one own a 2004 TDI 5-speed that I bought new. I just turned over 440,000 miles on the car runs perfectly. The older ones they seem to be the better engine designs. I've seen the same cars with 800,000 miles on them with the original engines. Thanks for posting the video it was sad 😢
Thanks for checking out the video, I have no doubt that these cars COULD reach higher miles. Unfortunately I believe they would need to run these cars for longer trips since new to get the miles. I think time is taking it's toll on the MK6 cars :(
Have you replaced the cam, I've got one that is due again, I've got 632k used the VW oil, regular changes, all stock. But I do Valvoline Restore every 20 K and just for 500 miles, it's pricey, but boy does the car respond, not a drop of oil usage. The Restore is a Cummins only item.
I've had 6 of these tdi's. Currently still have my wifes 2014 wagon with a dsg. Owned it since 5k now at 90k. Kept up with service and have had absolutely no problems with it. No of them ever had a single problem. This blows my mind. Im guessing both those engines where neglected?
Both engines are over 100k miles. The motor that was in it when I got it may or may not have been maintained well. I'm not sure. The second motor, in the 25k that I ran it, was not neglected. It saw 4 oil changes, oil levels checked frequently. I can't speak for it's experience before finding it's way to me. It could be an age thing. I have confirmed with an independent shop that the gasket between the oil cooler housing and the block fails and oilpressure is lost.
I'm on the fence on repairing my 13 Jsw that has a catastrophic fuel pump failure.Been doing allot of homework.Youre making me reconsider.I damn near felt my face want to seize up when I got the news I was out of warranty.Time to go look for a Toyota
I feel for you my friend. Its 9 months later and the car sits, untouched. I paid it off now but its still in my driveway as a $13,000 paperweight. Theres better cars.
Hey Dean! Sorry for your loss... My doctor said is ok to talk to yourself... Wenting your frustration is ok too, he said ;) Hope you get better luck with something else, maybe a volvo? If i were to drive a jetta, it would be mk2 ;). They are still on the roads here in Eastern Europe ;) That final scene got me both laughing and crying in the same time 🤣 Cheers!
@@DeanofMachines Gonna tune it, do the timing belt and high pressure fuel pump too. Hopefully it’s good after then. Just been having annoying Gremlins.
@@showbizcec4985 I'll give you a little behind the scenes since it's important to know that I've just started editing the teardown of my first motor failure and also included is investigating what canned the second motor. Oil cooler upper O ring. I think it killed both motors. It's easy enough to change as a maintenance item. You should do the upper and lower o rings while you are in there. You should be good to go.
@@showbizcec4985 Initial failure in the second motor was the upper oring. it's dried and cracked. If I had towed the car it may have been repairable. I made the decision to drive it based off of the other random electrical issues the car had with the temp gauge randomly not working and the bulb indicators saying the bulb was out while the light was working fine. Would be nice if we could just have an oil pressure gauge in new cars. /rant Thanks for checking out the channel either way
Is it a cjaa? Ive heard the 09 have issues with the counter balancing shafts that they quit using on the newer cjaa. Ive got 2 2011 sjw's , one has intermittent electrical gremlins, the other went into limp mode the other day, vcds show no boost and a host of other issues. Ive also have a 2012 jetta seden with over 250k without any issues. Some guy on RU-vid bought a Tdi Jsw that has a over 500 k and still going. I also have a 01 jetta, 03 beetle. Ive had a couple of other alh's too. Been driving these for 20 yrs. I had a 99.5 jetta with over 330k. The interior turned to shit but mechanically still drove well. 03 jetta wife totalled, 02 beetle over 220k sold to a friend. All manual transmissions. I guess you could say im a diesel freak.
Yep CJAA. I looked far and wide for a black on black manual wagon. Spent over 6 months and I finally snagged one. I honestly believe this car wasn't taken car of before I got it. I don't have an excuse for the second motor though. Only theory is oil cooler housing o ring popped.
I own the same model but a 2013 with 150k miles and it has been perfect, just changed the timing belt and prior to that I've only added fuel and changed the oil. Other owners I know have reported the same. Dude, I think you might be the problem.
Hey man, I'm really sorry for your loss. I'm fairly local to you... Rome GA and I have an A3 TDI. I've only had it for about a year and a half, and haven't had too much trouble with it. I'm rooting for you bud. I was looking at a Stevenson Tune as well. Do you think the tune had anything to do with the failure?
Nice to see a fellow Georgian! I don't think the tune had any factor what so ever in this failure. I'm assuming the gasket on the oil cooler housing failed and is bypassing oil internally. This is just a guess.
Ive been driving my ALH 2000 Golf TDI since 2002 when I bought it from the original owner with 50k on it. It now has 221k. Been wrecked twice and put back together by me. Its a base GL model so no power windows or sunroof or heated seats to break. Its been one of the most reliable vehicles Ive owned next to the 1983 Mazda B2200 diesel truck I bought new and retired in 1999 with 579k on it due to frame rust. That being said, there is no middle of the road with a VW. You either get a really good one, or a real piece of shit. Before the Golf I had a 2000 Beetle TDI I bought new and it was nothing but trouble. Made them take it back and gave me a 2001 Beetle TDI and that was almost as bad. Bought a beat up 98 Beetle TDI and drove it a year with zero issues before I bought the Golf in 2002 because I was tired of the build quality of the Mexican Beetle. I hope to run this car another 10 years if the body and parts supply holds out.
2014 JSW TDI DSG with 56K running OptiLube XL every tank and just added CeraTec to oil change 2K miles ago. Mahle fuel filter at 10K after running LiquiMoly Diesel Purge and getting 34 mpg combined and 42 mpg on highway. Need to get timing belt replaced due to age and low pH coolant warrants a waywr pump replacement soon. Any other suggestions to get to 200K even with the emissions garbage on it?
Mine (2013 Gold TDI) has 192k miles and it still runs like a champ...My DPF is dead though and I am planning a delete+ stage 1 tune next week....Can't wait to ditch this emission crap out of the car...It chokes the car....!
I have a VW Tiguan with 250k miles and other VWs. As a general rule, do all the work yourself if you can; otherwise, don't buy a VW or any Euro car, for that matter. They are very reliable but when they are not you better be able to fix it yourself.
I’m a Toyota guy. my wife liked the jsw so I got one against my better judgement. JSW ownership is sorta like a viagra fueled rawdogathon in Thailand. It’s a lot of fun but there are consequences.
Drop the pan and put a new oil pump in there I feel bad for you I have 4 TDI SportWagen I had the same thing happen to my main one that's got 290,000 Mi but when I did put the gauge I had 55 to 60 PSI oil pressure put new sending unit on and still Flash the code I feel bad for you but I would just change the sending unit and make sure I run a quarter Lucas synthetic in that motor they've been great cars to our family got them all for my kids and my wife and I'm in the process of deleting everyone good luck don't give up just change the pump
I appreciate the support and the vote of confidence. There comes a point where a guy is just tired of dealing with a car. Tired of pouring money into a car and overall just ready to drive something else. The car still sits in death row. Untouched for months. Maybe its time to do something with it…
You are correct to wonder why. Its my understanding that the later version on the cjaa is less likely to have that failure. Youve got me curious if my replacement was older than I thought.
@@DeanofMachines I own a TDI, we got my buddy one, and are shopping for a third. Having done more than a few months of searching, it seems to be prevalent in any of the iterations of the TDI, regardless of the year. I would maybe give it some consideration?
@@DeanofMachines Easy to diagnose that, get an oil sample, send it off for analysis, if it's highly worn internally it would show up in the oil sample.
I have a 2011 golf sportwag. Deleted and tuned - stage 2 Malone with Trans tune. Made a bunch of little mods here and there as i was updating parts. Most I would say is yours is in great shape. Lots of new components. I would go after the issue rather than give up on it. You've got something that can last another decade. This might be the only issue you have left on it.
Oh noooooo!!!! Maybe next vid can contain options on what would be required to fix it? What if you put in a new oil pump and just rolled the dice to see how many more miles you could get out of it?
Unfortunately the oil pump on this series of CJAA isn't known to fail. There is another failure pint that is common and matches the failure symptoms I experienced. I can promise you there will be more videos on this car.
How did you remove the egr pipe from front to back? Tearing mine down and tempted to use a Sawzall. Waiting on my parts from darkside development in the uk.
Fear not, you can lower the subframe to give you enough space to get the dpf out of the car. Fully removing the egr cooler is another challenge in irself
@@110americalovingpatriot2 Liqui Moly is often recommended as one of the go to kits. Though after this conversation, maybe it's not so great? I'm certain at this point I understand the failure and it wasn't oil quality, the second time anyway.
@DeanofMachines I'm in the process of putting everything I got from Rawtek on my 2014 Jetta TDI, I bought the car in December of 2018 and it only had 11 thousand miles on it and I only paid 12 thousand dollars for it, it was one of the like 250 thousand the Obummer administration was gonna destroy cause the engineers tricked the US computers into Making them think they were up to their stupid political agenda global warming BS but anyway I tore it down in September of 2019 and it's been sitting ever since, it's practically like a brand new car I think it has 19 thousand miles on it and it's the one that has all the upgraded options like sunroof heated seats auto start, I can't wait to get it going I just hope it doesn't become a boat anchor real quick.
Best words you've spoken: "Buy a Toyota" Only problem being that Toyotas Sell for LOTS more than crap VWs'. For genuine reasons. Buy cheap ass Junk and buy twice . OR IF dim: Repeatedly !
My 2010 VW JSW TDI is rock solid.... The Delete had nothing to do with your issue. YOU WENT AND RACED IT.... Oh OK..... Not a race car. DO NOT RACE, DO NOT TUNE, DO NOT DELETE AND MODIFY.,... MAINTAIN IT AND IT WILL LAST A LONG LONG LONG TIME.
@DeanofMachines I don't know. You tell me? I feel bad for you. I have been in VW TDI world 14 yrs, owner, active on forums. Never heard of many engine failures, especially for unknown reasons. TDI has several weak points but not the short block. Two issues CP4 HPFP and the alternator/ ac accessory belt. HPFP hand grenades, contaminates fuel system with metal is expensive to repair. The belt (outside the timing belt cover) if it fails or jumps off pully, it can wrap around crank shaft. The timing belt cover at the crank shaft has a big gap. The accessory belt gets under the cover fouls the cogged timing belt (cams). This can cause engine damage, valves hit pistons. This is very bad. There are solutions, but regular inspections and maintenance is 99% cure. Many TDI's with 200k, 300K miles on the OD and still going strong.
@DeanofMachines I know. Why? I personally never heard of a CJAA, CBEA (or BRM, BEW, AJM, AUY)...losing oil pressure. I just Googled it for sanity a check. Nothing. I ask you why? Did you tear engine down? Look for cause? Look at oil pump keyway? Sorry, it's rare with the CJAA. Two? Bad luck, my friend. Not saying your experience is not real, but it's "not a thing". VW TDI engines are NOT known for lubrication/oil pressure/oil temperature issues. They do have potential issues, as I said. Oil pressure is not one of them. Why did it happen? Can't guess but stand by my advice, maintaince is key, mods at your own risk.

40mpg 😂 you must be thrashing it all the time no wonder it’s dead you can’t blame VW i had a VW bora after two years of trouble free motoring I got it remapped after a week it needed a clutch I had to upgrade the suspension the car lost nearly all its refinement so I got it put back to standard realisability returned
This is why you shouldn’t tamper with stock design.. I cringe when I hear people use the terms stage x tune or DPF / EGR delete..
