3 months ago I got plant cuttings from another hobbyist, I planted them in a dirted aquarium jar. Loosely based on the Walstad Method. Now after this time I can say it's a big success, the plants are growing and I can officially say: it's working!
Plants:
Vallisneria Spiralis
Bacopa Caroliniana "green", "red" and "pigmy"
Ludwigia Repens "rubin" and a round leaf type

The best way to remove hair algae that i found is to use an old toothbrush you stick it in and rotate it all the algae will wind up on it later just take it off the toothbrush. Easy and quick.

I use organic potting soil for nearly 11 years. I have 4 planted aquarium with discus, guppy, tetras, angel all are healthy. Those so called aquarium soil are damn expensive. I don't even have co2

That's interesting. I have a 25 liters Walstad aquarium on a windowsill. It's about 4 weeks old and I have zero algae and the water is brownish, but clear. Maybe the difference is the soil. I use pond soil with a lot of peat. And I have frosted glass foil on the back side and a lot of floating plants. This reduces the sunlight. But a nice project. I like this jar
@GrowingInterest
@GrowingInterest 5 лет назад
That brown water should go after a few days and a few water changes, usually you don't get that much algae, but I let it run for almost 8 weeks without maintenance :D it's a strong light thought for that small of a container

@@GrowingInterest the brown water is ok. I have capatta leaves and a root in the aquarium. Maybe I change water today

Really nice. Curious to now if you tested the water to see if it was cycled before adding the snail? And parameters after doing the water changes?
@GrowingInterest
@GrowingInterest 5 лет назад
I did test the water before I put the snail in, it wasn't leaching something in from the soil. The snail is growing tremendous, it was a juvenile when I put it in :)

Very pretty!did you use organic dirt or dirt from outside your house ? And can you actually use dirt from outside your house in a planted aquarium with fishes?just asking.please respond ☺
@GrowingInterest
@GrowingInterest 5 лет назад
Thanks :) I used regular potting soil, you find it in every garden center. I think you can use soil from your garden but I never tested it before. If you use it make sure it's free of any pests or other animals or insects.
@rlricksterson
@rlricksterson 5 лет назад
How can I make sure it doesn't have those kind of pests?

@@rlricksterson I had pest snails in it, like miniature ramshorn snails, I collected it almost daily till there gone, it's tedious but it worked :D

@GrowingInterest
@GrowingInterest 5 лет назад
No it's way to small for fish, they will not have a happy live and die fast :( it's a small water volume that is good for a snail :)

Hi, Are you just planning 100%water changes every 2-3 weeks ? Or Are you planning on just top the water off as it evaporate ? Thank you
@GrowingInterest
