Jeremiah. This was a very informative video for a person just getting into owning, loading pistol ammo, and shooting revolvers such as myself. I have a very good friend and mentor teaching me the ins and outs of revolvers and loading ammo for them. Up until now, I've only dealt with bolt action hunting rifles, so this is all fresh knowledge being gained from your excellent videos. Keep up the great work and thank you as well as Handloader TV for bringing this knowledge to us viewers/fans.

Steve, Thank you so much for the kind words they really mean a lot to me and getting to hear that kind of feedback makes my day. When it is all said and done that is the best I can hope for that I have helped someone and hopefully got them a little more excited to try out a load or a particular firearm or simply to learn more. So i really appreciate the kind words. I will keep the videos coming as long as I am able to! I wish all the best to you and your reloading! --Jeremiah

For anyone who has the ability to play with custom barrels /twist rates and chambers the .327 has some really cool load options foe subsonic use. It takes the same bullet diameter as the .303 british or .312. so fast twist barrel with a tapered rifling onset and you have a really neat range toy.

One of the reasons I got into handloading is the ability to purchase guns in uncommon calibers, and being able to buy - and feed - my Ruger Single-Seven is just one example. I found a lightly used Birdshead model, and bought immediately bought it along with the necessary dies, brass and bullets. I use Hornady 100-grain XTPs with 4.6 grains of Universal - in Starline Brass, naturally - for a modest, fun load. I never had a Birdshead revolver before, and I was surprised with how comfortable it is in my hand (YMMV). Keep up the good work, brother!

I can completely understand that handloading opens up so many possibilities and it truly is a lot of fun to be able to feed those odd cartridges and classic guns. That sounds like a really neat find! You don't see too many of those floating around! Thanks for sharing your load data that sounds like a great plinking load which is honestly what I think I do the most of with this cartridge it is just plain fun. You can't go wrong with Starline brass, outstanding quality a natural choice! Thank you very much for watching and for taking the time to comment! We will definitely keep the videos coming! --Jeremiah

A nice thing about the guns designed around this high pressure cartridge, is that you can go with faster powders near the max charge, and still get enough velocity to keep the bullet well above expansion threshold. For example, out of my 4" Ruger SP101 I got around 1200fps from 5.0gr of Titegroup with an XTP 100gr bullet. Very pleasant to shoot - much nicer than H110. Thanks for the warnings about high ES in this cartridge. I was wondering about that. Good video.
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 3 года назад
That is true and one of the most wonderful things about rolling your own ammunition! You are very welcome we wanted to be sure to show that and mention the High ES it is a common and known issue with this cartridge with some tinkering you can lower those numbers to acceptable but it takes a lot of tweaking. Glad you liked the video and thank you for watching and commenting!

I have to say this is one of the best structures for presentation of loads. Thanks for that, you have a subscriber because of this. My one question is; what is your hold when aiming at the target? Are you using a 6 o'clock hold or a center of bull? Knowing this will put your bullet strike in perspective for us out here in "audience land". 😊

Some results for testing fps indicate that the 5-1/2" bbl. single 7 is a bit faster then the 7-1/2" . Indicating that the slower burning powders would work best in the longer bbl. Thanks great review of a fine caliber round.

Great detail in this video, Jeremiah. Now that I’m older…I’m not as interested in full-power fire breathing loads for my .357’s, .45’s, and such. Arthritis, and back troubles have had me consider more reasonable handloads. I have long been curious about the .327 Federal. I believe it may be time for me to shop for a nice .327 carry gun and also a little longer barrel target/plinking example. What could you recommend for carry vs plinking? Does Ruger make the Single Seven in a 6” barrel? How about S&W? Thanks again for your time and effort in showcasing this revolver and the handloads for it. I may have to get dies for my Dillon 550 soon!

Thank you very much I try to cover as much as possible in these load development videos! I have an appreciation for mild recoiling cartridges and loads. Some days you just want to have some fun plinking! I think for you application the .327 Federal could be a great option. I am personally a big fan of the Smith and Wesson wheelguns, for carry that would be my personal first choice especially. I don't know about 6" barrels in particular but I have seen many Rugers with different lengths on the used market. The Ruger would probably be my choice when it comes to plinking just cause i like the function of the Ruger. There are a little more traditional for lack of better wording. Jeremiah: thanks for a very good video. After reading about the 327, I expected to see lots of recoil and hear lots of blast... but it appeared to be more like a 38 spl light wadcutter load from my perspective. I'm kinda curious as to what the groups sizes would have been had you been shooting at 25 yards instead of 15....obviously bigger, but how much bigger? Keep up the good work!!
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 2 года назад
Thank you very much for taking the time to watch, we appreciate it! The recoil is really not that bad with most of the loads we tested I would say it is quite comparable to light .38 Special loads. I personally really enjoyed the cartridge and found it to be a lot of fun to plink with because of the light recoil. Early on we settled on 15 Yards to test all handguns for load development it is far enough to see deviations between loads and we thought it would be a good distance which we could test all variety of handguns at from pocket pistols to big bore revolvers. Hindsight being 20/20 I almost wish we would have settled on 25 Yards. Just cause that seems to be more pleasing to most folks. That being said I still have this firearm and still shoot it from time to time using these same loads I developed here, The Loads containing the Hornady XTP still group under an inch when I do my part at 25 yards. The Acmee bullets also perform very well and I regularly shoot a 10" gong at 100 yards with those bullets, I do not recall what they grouped at 25 Yards off the top of my head but I have no complaints with accuracy out to 100 yards with this cartridge and gun combo. Thank you again for watching and all the support! --Jeremiah

I have Single-Sevens in 7" and 4 5/8". My experience with this gun and cartridge mirrors yours. They're great fun plinkers and accuracy is the same for either revolver. 327 Federal magnum is not much of a target cartridge in my experience. I did buy a used single six in 32 H&R Magnum a few years ago. That little purple/blue 4 5/8" is very accurate with various handloads.

Thank you for a very well done video, and I'll get issue 328. Now, I bought a Ruger Single Seven for my daughter to use in Cowboy Action Shooting (versus my two Ruger Blackhawks using .38 Spl) for their lighter weight and lower recoil. Did you test any lead bullets in lighter loads that I could try for CAS? If yes, what were they? And do you have any data on the .32 S&W Long? BTW, I subscribe to Handloader Magazine, and although I don't load more than 7 calibers, I do learn interesting and applicable facts from reading all the articles.

@HandloaderTV 3 года назад
No problem thank you very much for watching! I think you will enjoy the article there is a lot of information packed in there that you won't find anywhere else. That sounds like a great application for the Single seven and the .327 Federal magnum. Off Camera and in various articles we have tested some pretty light loads there is data out there on our website Loaddata.com Titegroup powder with lead bullets allows for some pretty light loads and with Titegroup powder not being position sensitive it is a great option. We have also tested trail boss powder and for light loads it works very very well recoil is very light. Again for .32 S&W data I will refer you to our Loaddata website there is quite a few tables listed on there. Check it out before you subscribe and see what you think. If you send us an email we can provide more load data details in there. It is rather difficult to do so in these comments unfortunately. We greatly appreciate your subscription and support, If it wasn't for folks like you we couldn't make videos like this! I really wish that Colt would bring out a Federal .327 Magnum 3-inch python that has night sights. The heavy revolver profile should soak up the recoil quiet nicely for the cartridge designed for short barreled revolvers.
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 2 года назад
I think that would be super cool! A lot of practical applications for that and it would be a joy to plink with as well! I wonder if you could get a gunsmith to make one since parts seem to be more available as of lately. That would be a pretty cool little wheelgun. --Jeremiah

@@HandloaderTV I like the idea of a revolver soaking up recoil to something like a Olympic rapid fire pistol, but it also provides great defense with modern hollow points. Imagine a granny shooting a revolver at a thug who's beating up her husband, and the barrel barely moves up due to recoil. That's why I find the idea of a .327 federal snub nose python to be a cool carry piece with night sights. Little felt recoil.
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 2 года назад
@@jmd1743 I agree the extra weight and the effect it would have on recoil. I would say it would make a very viable self defense cartridge and you'd gain an extra round in the cylinder for what that is worth. I agree in full with that I think that would be a very cool idea if ever implemented. --Jeremiah
@lawrencehudson9939

There is an issue of weight using a Colt Python frame revolver even with 7 to 8 cartridges in the cylinder. When the 327 first came out Ruger offered the Blackhawk in this caliber. It was a very heavy revolver and was quickly discontinued by Ruger in that frame size. I also used to have a Colt Officer's Model Match in 32 S&W Long which is the same frame size as the Python, and it was noticeably heavier than the same model in 38 Special. Now you could lighten the barrel to balance the weight something S&W did with their K series revolvers the K22, K32 and K38 were balanced to make a complimentary set and the S&W Model 27 & 28 have a thinner barrel than the other N frame revolvers of the post WW2 era. Doing that changes the silhouette of the Python but you could hollow out the underlug which early Pythons had so shooters could play with weight and balance.

The 327 doesn't get near the respect it deserves. A high performance 32 it about the most sensible thing one could come up with for the lower 48. The 32 H&R is a fine defense caliber (heck the 32 Long wasn't really a bad choice either) but the 327 makes it a real overachiever in a small package even managing medium game especially in a rifle. A revolver in this chambering can even fire the very efficient 32 short for plinking, pests, and small game.

Back when H&R made their revolver for the 32 if it had just been stronger the ammunition would have been produced in higher pressure. Then Ruger chambered the SP101 in 32 H&R but it was to late the damage was down. Now the only ammunition manufacturer that loads the 32 H&R to higher is Buffalo Bore. Combined with a 4 inch SP101 would make a outstanding combination. Maybe the 327 wouldn’t have been developed 😉

Good insight - I think that’s about the size of it. Lipsey’s is coming out with some really well set up .32 H&R Mag J-frames, so hopefully that will give the better-proportioned H&R cartridge a little shot in the arm.
@exothermal.sprocket

With that longer 7.5" barrel, I'd expect to see at least 1500-1600 fps in the hottest stuff around 100gr bullets. Really wish the manufacturers would take the .327 as seriously as the usual .357mag caliber, when it comes to fit and finish, strength, function, accuracy, and so on. It's so easy to get bullets and casings and load stats for .357mag and why not? It's probably the most versatile handgun cartridge ever invented. But, the .327 is a super stout cartridge for the .312 caliber and deserves at least as much attention in the guns created for it. The Single Seven doesn't feed or eject as well, doesn't function as cleanly, and in the earliest releases of the Single Seven, Ruger had issues getting ANY cartridge to slip in/out of that gate if the cylinder was even a fraction out of center. Seems there is little to any tolerance in the casting and the distance from cylinder center isn't great enough. Ruger, you can do better. Smith, you can return to offering these in the J-frame. Marlin, Winchester... you can offer a lever action for it. Henry, you can put a side-gate in your .327 Leveraction (they returned my email and said they had no plans to add a gate to the .327 or .41 magnums).
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV Год назад
You can easily achieve 1,500 FPS with the 100 grain bullets in the 7 1/2 inch barrel but hitting 1,600 FPS can be a bit tricky especially with the wild velocity swings this cartridge is known for. I know with accurate No. 9 and a Hornady XTP it can be done but you are really at the top end of that cartridge. I don't know why this cartridge does not get more love, it's not a bad cartridge and I thoroughly enjoy it and in spite of the velocity swings it still can be very accurate and at most reasonable ranges it does very well. The limiting factors are certainly the firearms that are chambered in these cartridges. If you have a very well built firearms and high quality brass I think it can make a big difference in those spreads as well. It is always a shame to see cartridges fall to the wayside and sadly this seems to be one that has fallen to the wayside. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah
