Testing out some .327 Federal Magnum handloads with 100 gr XTP's and Ramshot Enforcer powder. I do a 10% Clear Ballistics test, some accuracy and chronograph tests as well as a big dose of personal opinion and facts about the .327 Federal Magnum. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.com/user?u=5828221

The 327 Federal Magnum is an awesome cartridge. You know already how many other 32 caliber cartridges can be chambered and fired in a revolver.

Carried all sorts of 9mm, 357, 38 Specials. However, about 5 years ago, both my wife and I started carrying a LCRx 327. Federal's American Eagle 85 grain SP and Federal's Premium Personal Defense 85 grain HP are the exact same performance loads except different bullets. My wife carries Federal 32 H&R Magnum Personal Defense 85 grain. The 327 is a reloaders dream especially now with stock being limited or non-existent. Also, have a Ruger Gemini Customs SP101 327 which I use to shoot my heavy loads. Very enjoyable video especially if you're a 327 fan.

I went with the 32 H&R about the time the 327 was announced. It has always been a handloaders cartridge because factory ammo is tough to find. Because of that I just use Starline brass. I think that one brand of good consistent brass helps the accuracy of my loads.

Nice work, Gun Sam! You've cooked up a fantastic round. With the exception of one particular gun (my copper cylinder 38 spl) I've never liked the long trigger on the LCR, which is why I bought an LCRx when I started testing the 327 Federal. The Gold Dots pretty much shook that thing apart. I need to get a gun like yours. Maybe I'll be the next Taurus revolver guinea pig, I notice they're making a steel frame 327 six shooter now...

@gidim8367
@gidim8367 2 года назад
I have the LCRx in 327 and I have yet to shoot hot 327 Magnum through it. There is another Utuber that had a issue with a LCRx in 327 where the gun sub frames separated while shooting gold dot .327 through it (woah that is you Discrete Defense LOL,) With the traditional LCR there are two screws holding it together one by the hammer shroud and the crane pivot screw. With the LCRx only the crane pivot screw holds the sub frames together. It appears if the crane pivot screw comes lose your gun will separate. The other issue with this is it's an extremely expensive gun for what it is, usually $600 + retail for a metal polymer snub. It's one thing if your firearm has a manufacturing flaw but when it's badly engineered from the drawing board up, manufactured and distributed that's bad business. Don't get me wrong I love my Rugers, but the LCRx I don't know. Only get the LCR if you get one. Discrete Defense do you still have yours? With the utter scarcity and exceptional price gouging of most hand guns chambered in .327 Taurus does provide a option and at price point. I recently got one. It's a chunk of a gun but very good compact size. It feels solid, timing and lock up are good, I have a spare cylinder stop spring and plunger in case of the weak cylinder spring issue with some of the small frame Tauruses. I will say it does not feel like it will fall apart🤣

@gidim8367
@gidim8367 2 года назад
@@markmuch1295 I love how people casually mention to try "this" out you'll love it. This firearm is unobtainable and if you do find one it retails for $900ish. I'll never pay $900 for a sp101 ever! The LCR in. 327 is $600+which for what it is over priced to the hilt $500 is okay maybe $550. I could see that. The Taurus M327 is $370ish. For a mid performing round in a reasonably hard to come by caliber other than hand loading(cases are REALLY really hard to find btw), I'd say skip the drama pomp and circumstance get a 38/357. If you want to go budget compact good quality get a ec9s or lc9s. +P rated 9mm. Mine are ridiculously accurate for what they are higher capacity than revolvers concealable, fantastic trigger, and reliable. I traded my ec9 for an lc9 because I wanted the high viz sights. What a great little shooter! Honestly as far as revolvers the quality of all brands has got increasingly worse accept for Taurus who always balances on marginal. Ive had bad samples from all three major manufacturers. Ruger being the best to deal with. Not impressed with Smith and Wesson customer service at all. Their QC is why I started gambling with Taurus. Why many of my heirloom revolvers are GP's and SP101's. My Taurus small frames are my kick around guns. Great niche since j frames just suck to shoot. My med large frame revolvers are all Smith and Ruger. Taurus nailed a market segment that I like that the other two simply didn't in the small frame. They are value based quality. Not knowing this at this point in history is because you're brand new to firearms or your dumb. Buy them and take a chance or move the fuck down the road. I'm sick of hearing people whining. Based on the absolute rubber spine of the gun community you'll be lucky to own a single action revolver in about two years.

@@P.HATHCOX 32acp can be iffy to get a hold of, but the gun itself is probably one of my favorites. The tip up mechanism is a little tighter than videos make it out to be, but isn't difficult by any means. Only gun I carry as frequently as my Tomcat is my NAA mini and Ruger LCP, the LCP is thinner, but the recoil sucks. 32acp out of a Tomcat sounds mean, but is a pussycat and can be fired rather quickly while maintaining accuracy. Only real issue with the Tomcat is that you havre to use loads with less than 130 pounds of energy. Most FMJ is in that ballpark, but a lot of +p hollow point stuff is above that. You Don't want to carry hollow points in 32acp anyway so it isn't much of a loss imo. I carry standard pressure Undrerwood Xtreme Defender loads, they run a good 20lbs under max energy level and are pretty accurate and make neat little Xs when you shoot paper with them.

But I do sometimes find myself wanting something smaller. Odd, and maybe itKs camera angle, but it looked to me like some of those 32’s at 75 were hitting high and maybe right. More barrel time & muzzle flip with the slower rounds, so higher initial launch angle? I do enjpy handloading for revolvers.👍

It's gonna be moving a little faster and if I had to guess, the data will prob say you can load it just a bit warmer without concern for a pressure spike too, making it easier to reach the expansion threshold. Let us know if it works, thanks ✌️

I'm curious, what's your stance on 30 Super Carry, and also... Can it be fired in a 327 Fed Mag revolver? Edit: it also seems that, due to lack of proper expansion, these would actually do less damage than 45 ACP Hardball. Really goes to show the importance of projectile selection.

i'm not very well versed in .30 Super Carry as since I didn't buy one yet I don't know it's ballistics fully. From the small info I do know, it's about the same .312" bullet and it's about as powerful as .32 H&R Mag+P or low end .327 Federal, roughly 320 FPE or so in a 3.5" barrel. The .327 can be a lot more powerful, in a 3" revolver like 500 FPE with Gold Dot. All that being said, the .30 Super Carry should penetrate and expand the same as regular 9mm as there's less bullet there to fight the forces wanting to expand it.
@vlogfriendsutopia
@vlogfriendsutopia 2 года назад
@@GunSam Yeah, nominally it's about 347 FPE, and from the testing I've seen, penetrates about 17 inches and expands to about 0.53, all from a 3.5 inch barrel. I do wonder how it would perform out of a 5 inch barrel, as nighthawk customs has a 1911 in 30SC.

Sam, looking around online I found that Sierra makes 90gr Jacketed Hollow Cavity SportsMaster bullet in .312". I know you make XTP handloads and they had trouble expanding reliably. Have you known about, or considered the Sierra bullet?

Wm B - I agree that the 327 isn't as well known as it should be. And I agree that it has had a slow start. But it not only keeps "hanging in there", but it keeps gaining ground. I've been recommending the Ruger LCR in 327 for quite a while now. It is a particularly good choice for new shooters and for women. It is light enough that it's actually likely to get carried, and not left at home. It can shoot 32 S&W short which is an excellent learning round. Some say it's a centerfire 22. I've never made that comparison, but others have. It can shoot 32 S&W long, which is a highly accurate round. When 3 gun bullseye shoots were popular, the 32 S&W long was the king of the "Any centerfire" stage. And, as Gun Sam has previously shown, it's a better cartridge than many think. It can shoot 32 H&R mag, which is a decent EDC in its own right. And when ready, you can shoot full house 327, which approaches 357 performance. Six rounds instead of five. It has so many useful attributes that I think it will continue to gradually gain ground as people start recognizing its capabilities.

Why would you buy a 327mag that is very expensive to shoot, when it isn't any better than shooting Underwood or BuffaloBore +P out of a .38? It's much cheaper to practice with a .38 than a 327mag, and .38 ammo is much easier to find than any of the .32 loading's. If you want 6 rounds, get something like a Taurus 856. Each to their own.
