In episode 106 of Truck House Life, I give my review of the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT tires after 35,000 miles of use on a fully-loaded HEAVY 10,000 lb. Ford 350 with truck camper. I talk about how long the tires might last on a heavy truck, how they handle in snow and ice / winter driving conditions, gravel roads, pavement, rain, etc.
I also talk quickly about the General Grabber X3 tires (the tires I replaced my Coopers with) and why they are considered the best mud terrain tire for snow and ice.

Thanks for the review. I have 60k miles on my Cooper AT3 XLTs and still have about 20k to 30k miles of life left in them. I rotate them every 5k to 10k miles though. I can't see myself buying another tire for street and offroading because these are so durable and haven't left me stuck or stranded. Not one single puncture in 60k miles and I've pulled out screws and nails from the rubber treads. (I visit construction sites a few times a week).

Max psi on a narrow rim will cause premature wear in the center. The edge wear is usually alignment or under inflation.
@TruckHouseLife

Makes sense.
@jamesnm21

Edge wear can also be a bad bearing. (Duh) I could not figure out what was causing my Subaru rear tire to wear through to the wires on the shoulders while the center still had 50% tread. Alignment and suspension was good. Finally heard the bearing popping and took it apart to find it completely trashed. Lol. Just hadn't occured to me.

Wheels look amazing on the truck! On our 2005 F350 Dually we first swapped out the Michelin tires on the front to Cooper Discoverer HT3 for road use. Now with the truck camper build we just replaced the Michelins and went with the General Grabber A/Tx on rear end. They also had great reviews for on road, off road and mud. We've been very pleased on road and off. Once our camper build is completed and we've exhausted all our funds, we will replace the fronts with Generals. Our Coopers tires also have a lot of tire wear on the out sides. The shop that put on our rear Generals said that was most likely caused by rear weight loads such as trailer/equipment hauling. While going into turns weight load is pushing into the side walls especially since we have downward pressure on the back end. Makes sense to me. After all the Michelins looked the same when we pulled those off for replacement. Mark & Teresa

Yup, it's important to make sure the airbags are inflated the same on both sides, I had a leak in one airbag and didn't top if off every time I drove, so I'm sure that caused the tire wear.

Thanks for your detailed review of two of the three I shortlisted, literally. So I went with the … Firestone Destination XT and I am very impressed with them on my Chevy 2500HD. Compared to going away from a Michelin Defender LTX A/S, the Firestone is quieter than expected and don’t notice a fuel penalty and the grip has been great on gravel roads in the Rcky Mtn foothills of Alberta. I’m sure I would have been as happy with the two you reviewed as well.

@@timothysommers4863 Well, I’m from that time too Timothy. I don’t think any company that manufactures something which literally has the entire vehicle riding on it, intentionally makes it to fail as that particular series of tire did (I.e for the Ford Explorer). I think one can agree that Bridgestone (mother Corp.) makes some premium lines of tires. And some technology comes from independent design teams from the Firestone side. PS, these are my first set of Firestones, and so far, they’ve been great. Millions of other Firestones are riding on many vehicles as I write this (no reports of issues, do you know any recent ones?).

The coincidence is I had Cooper AT3's on my truck when i bought it and they were really great, i swapped them out for Grabber X3's in 2018 and its about time for a new set...the sad part is they have so much tread left, the cracking and discoloration is minimal, I can only tell they're old now because they started humming lol. I really wish the Perelli Scorpion MTR came in E range but since it doesn't another set of X3's is my first choice. They are completely over engineered.

I've owned both cooper at3's and general grabber ATX. The coopers I feel did slightly better in rain, however they wore a little quicker then I would have liked (35k miles). As far as road noise I would say they are equal. Snow traction seems pretty equal. Off-road I would give a slight advantage to the grabbers for the more agressive pattern and sidewall. I wouldn't regret buying either tires again. If you drive to work during the week and off-road on the weekends then the grabber is probably a better tire. If you mainly daily drive and want to be ready for any inclement weather, then the at3 might be a good choice. One reason I went to general was because they are an American tire and they give back to the community, they are very active on the tournament fishing scene.

Been running M/T tires for most of my life and find them lot more expensive to own. If you drive a lot of highway and street miles your paying a lot for looks running M/T . Far as noise the M/T tires are usually pretty quiet when new the get louder as they wear. I've found that tire pressure makes big difference in off road performance and wear. Summer time usually run the max [80] and hunting season and winter will go down to 40 [ if no load]. I'm thinking of trying R/T tire for more wear, most R/Ts have around 50k mileage warranty where most M/Ts have 0. To review a new tire is a waste of time , like wait until they are wore out and then tell me what you think of them.

I had them balanced a good 5 or 6 times in 1st 5000 miles. Then pumped them to max pressure eventhough the weights did not require it and issue was fixed.

Timmy I have several different 4x4 Chevy trucks with one being a 2007 classic body style Duramax!! With it being the lightest out of the three named brand trucks out there mine ways around 7500lbs and I have a posi rear end also!! My fist set of tires was a set of cooper STT MT tires!! Now I went with these because of the old tread pattern and how well they would last on pavement and gravel!! Needless to say the set of STT I wasn’t able to get 10,000 miles out of them!! I was definitely not impressed with them and would definitely not get another set after going through a set in under 10,000 miles!! The next set I went with was a set of pro comp MT2 with the only mud tire to have a 40,000 mile road warranty on!! My first set cost the same amount as the cooper STT MT tires did and I was able get get over 50,000 miles out of my first set!! Now during the winter I also push snow with my duramax and I have never once been stuck with either set I have run on my truck!! Super happy with them and I would definitely get another set but I was wanting to find a little bit cheaper tire and desided to go with a thunder MT tire that cost around 150.00to 160.00 each!! And for a 265 or a 285 size tire!! I run a 265x75x16” tire for pushing snow and the weight of my boss V plow I run!! The pro comp MT2 run 250.00 each!! So my first two sets of thunders MT tire I have run I have gotten over 42,000 miles out of and they also do very well all around weather also and for pushing snow!!! Super happy with both tires and I definitely would buy either one again in a hart beat for sure!! I have worked at a tire shop for several years back in the day also so I have lots of experience with lots of different brands of tires also!! BFG messed up when they changed their MT tire to the new tread pattern that they have today!!! There old tread pattern tire was like coopers old mud terrain tire was!! Both worked excellent on gravel, pavement, snow, ice, rainy roads, and what ever else you threw at them they would definitely last for sure!! I actually just put my last set of BFG’s first mud pattern design tire on my 1981 Chevy K30 witch are a set of 35”x12.50”x16” and I absolutely love them but you can’t get them anymore!!!🙁☹️ BFG messed up big time for sure!! Now if BFG would come out with that original tread pattern again I would definitely not think twice about getting several sets because they was definitely a really good set of mud tires for sure!!! I’d definitely like to hear what you have to say about the general tires after you get some time with them and see if I’m Wright on what you have to say about them after some time on them??? Keep us updated if you would please???

Hey Timmy, nice tires, I would like to put those on my 89 Ford F150 Lariat 4x4. Where did you get yours?

Got the coopers at Phelps and the Generals from Trailbuilt Offroad in the lower 48 (had them shipped up, crazy 1 year backorder).

The only downside of the grabbers is the size of the rocks they pick up. I have them on my half ton and don’t need 4c4 hardly ever.

Only a couple times, they did pretty well just put 37 Toyo at3's on the Grabbers still had a lot of life left in them and I put about 30,000 miles on them

Wearing on the edges usually means underinflated and middle wear usually means overinflation. Usually.

How do you would you rate cooper and snow and ice as to the brgoodrich ko2s
@TruckHouseLife
@TruckHouseLife Год назад
KO2s are better on snow/ice.
@chadolive1
@chadolive1 Год назад
lol figures...coopers are more affordable right now compared to my Maxxis A/T that have zero snow ice rating. Of the two I am trying pic between Motor master Trail Eliminators, designed by Cooper for Canadian Tire, or the At3 cooper discoverer 4s? Also, it was easier to push down the cooper tire 4s when I had both of the tires stand up beside each other in the show room. Would that stiffer tire be a little better? same Plys identical, and if you could check out the tread patterns on both I would really appreciate it. I will save up for K02's for my next tire I have seen and heard only good things about them.
