Creating a depth map within Photoshop's 3D engine is easy, and it's a great way to allow you to sculpt irregular surfaces. Using black and white similar to dodging and burning, you can lift and push the surface of your 3D object to give it added depth and realism.

I want to say thank you brother for the 3d tutorial series. You really broke down the basics enough for me to drive the rest of the way and experiment. Your work is greatly appreciated.

Awesome tutorial! As a deaf artist, your caption was very clear, makes it a lot more easier for me to understand what your'e saying as you go along demonstrating your work of art. Spot on Michael! I've subscribed to your Channel too.

Wow. Amazing trick. I've been overlooking Photoshop's 3d module all the time, but it can be really useful!

Michael, thanks for a great tutorial. As a 3D photographer printing my work as glasses free lenticulars, I sometimes need to convert a 2D to 12-18 multiviews that I can interlace to print the lenticular. I'm experienced in creating depthmaps, but haven't seen the 3D capabilities of CS6 before. Can I open a 2D photo, use the 3D features in Photoshop to create the depthmap as you've shown & then take individual JPGs of the 3D image from diff angles? If so, can you pls do a quick tutorial to show me how using a photo I'll email you. Thanks in advance.

Hi Michael ! This technique works well with CC photoshop but I do exactly the same things with photoshop 2014 and the same picture after editing and saving the gray layer, nothing changes on the 3D layer. Looks like recording of the depth maps is not done properly. When I want to re-change it, it's the original image which returns in the PSB. What can happen ?

Thanks for doing more with 3D. Your tutorials are much appreciated as I would never have stumbled on this or understood what was happening if I did. I there any way the 3D can work as an amplified displacement map? I guess I'm picturing more specific "shaping" or adherence to a 3d form than brushstrokes would provide. Again thanks!

The "shaping" capabilities within Photoshop are still fairly primitive, and not in the same league as the high end 3D programs. The best you can do is paint on the depth map with a low opacity brush and lay the color on gradually.

Great - GREAT! - tutorial. Unfortunately, similar to others here using CS6 extended, I too am unable to see "Edit Source" in the Properties menu. Any advice much appreciated.... from anyone :

As I had the same problem... You need to double click on "Background Depth Map" within the Layers Panel. That brings up the new file that you use to Fill Gray at 50%.

Great tutorial ! I have a little problem, even after application of the gaussian blur (more than 200 pixels) on the depth maps, there is some strongly visible aliasing on the final image. Have you a solution ?
@JackStruss
@JackStruss 10 лет назад
Sorry : solution is simple, I have to work in 16 bits rather than 8 bits
@MichaelHoffman

Jack Struss, I'm glad you figured it out. Keep in mind that you can even go to 32 bits for textures if needed. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Great tutorial but I have a question: why we can't render depth maps based graphics? It is just starting for a second and that's it. Is there is any solution?

Good day to you Michael. Was following your Photoshop CS6-CC-09 Depth Maps tutorial until I got to the step where you EDIT the depth map. I am using CS6 Extended and when I got to that point, the PROPERTIES PANEL only showed CATCH SHADOWS AND CAST SHADOWS. It never gave the option to EDIT SOURCE. Is there something I missed? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

His tutorial is for CC. For CS6 he should have told us that what we need to do is: Double click on "Background Depth Map" within the Layers Panel. That brings up the new file that you use to Fill Gray at 50%.

Hi Gil, did you create a depth map "to plane?" If you did, the next step is to click on "Depth map" in the 3D panel, and this will then activate the "Edit Source" button in the properties panel. Also, are you using Photoshop CC, or an earlier version?

Michael Hoffman I´m using photoshop cs6, that´s why edit source button its not showing up, have to get Photoshop cc strait qway, thank you, great turorial!! very nice trick!! thanks!!

gil macedo you can do this with CS6, the technique is just slightly different. It is still possible to edit the source texture of the depth map. I don't have CS6 currently installed, but as I recall, the method is to go to the layers panel and double click the depth map element that is listed under the 3D layer.
