3D SCANNING the Van!! Van Prebuild Series

Before going headfirst into the van build, I wanted to get a 3d model of the inside if the van. I tried reaching out to Mercedes and didn't hear back (no surprise) so what should I do?
Luckily, we have an iPad Pro which has a lidar (aka 3d ToF sensor). Using this with an app aptly called 3d scanner app to create a 3d model of anything you want.
So armed with the ipad pro and 3d scanner app, I scanned the inside of the van. Now I can get to work modeling the build.

Thanks for the comment! Definitely appreciate it. Hard to stay motivated for videos when they don't get many views. I do have a few filmed, just need to find time to edit. Hard to do with a full time job and a newborn though... hopefully I'll get something up soon

Thank you for sharing, I quite enjoyed watching as it is something Im intending to do. Now, I would be interested in any follow up contents on how you design your layouts and furniture pieces once you have the van scanned... all the way up to ready for cnc cutting

Thanks. I used fusion 360 to work on the model. Tbh I never actually finished it in any major detail but it was really helpful in getting the layout figured out and try different sizes of refrigerators and things like that

Yes I'd like to see the rest. Could this be done using blender? I'm using a mac, and also on a very tight budget. Looking to build a sleeping platform for a 4Runner with aluminum extrusion. I am technically savy, but not handy, so need to lean to may strengths. Thinking my way out "into a box" instead of cutting into one.

Love this. Thank you for a great intro. I want to do this for my promaster City van. Is there any benefit to using the front facing laser? I'd read it has better resolution.

Honestly not sure, haven't tried with the front camera. Would be hard to keep track and see what you scanned though as you wouldn't be able to see the screen very well

@@willofthemaker No problem. I'd read in some other youtube description that some people are using a screen repeater. I don't really know how that works though. Just hoping that relatively accurate 3d scanning becomes more economical. I think it could cause an explosion of innovation. Most of the consumer-grade 3d scanners I've seen are oriented towards playing with dolls so far. There are a lot of people obsessed with dolls, and I guess fewer of us who want functional things...I've been tracking it for 3+ years and change is SLOOOOOOOW.

@@nicklockard wow, hadn't seen that before with a screen repeater. The accuracy of this scan is ok. Definitely have to take anything with a grain of salt but useful for general quick and dirty work. I would love for the tech to get better and more useful from an engineering standpoint. Unfortunately I think we are such a small market use case it's gonna take awhile. I'm an android user and have no real option generally. Luckily the wife is apple and has the pro devices.
