Thank you for telling us this, Dan. I have moderate autism and I’m visually impaired. My special interest is Disney and I use it to chill out all the time. Hearing from you makes me less alone. Thank you. 🙂

When I'm on my long walks and I haven't touched anything in a while I guess he's really strong urges to touch a tree, or a bush. When you mentioned the sensory exercises that was the first thing to pop up in my mind. And I do feel more secure with my surroundings when I touch those things on my walk.

The trick is to give up caring. Remember you are the background character in somebody else's story.

I find lock sport (picking locks) helps with fine motor skills. It helps me relax as well, and no light is required if you need little to no light for your relaxation time.

I (obviously)like youtube-videos to my special interests. And simple computer -games with no time-limits help me to calm down and relax after a long day. And knitting helps as a stimming-tool.

I thought my daughter a toy for her birthday that I didn't realize would be very relaxing for me from a sensory perspective. I just saw that little rainbow slug and knew my daughter would love it. After opening it up and playing with it a bit, the way you can move it, the sound it makes. It's so soothing and I plan on buying myself one to

i think it is interesting that virtually all of these can be addressed through mindfulness meditation and martial arts. for me, literally all four of them are fulfilled more specifically by taiji and qigong, alongside the chinese philosophy that tends to provide a context for them; fulfilling, 1) a special interest, 2) working with proprioception and developing sensory enhancing/refining abilities, as well as 3) working with fine motor skills in terms of either empty hand, or better, weapons styles in marital arts, and the weapons usage itself being 4) a form of sensory stimulation (e.g. nunchucks or staff work; butterfly knives are also good for fine motor skill development). the video is great in its ability to reach a wide range of interests, but it is also interesting to find activities that are a sort of "ikigai" (capturing all the factors involved) in a single practice.

I just turned 30 today and for my birthday I just realized that I most likely have asbergers. I am having a lot of different emotions and am very overwhelmed. It’s like I am rewatching every event of my life and realizing how much sense it now makes. I guess the part the gives me the most anxiety is what people think of me. Does everyone know? Do they think I’m weird? Have my friends and family been hiding it from me? I just don’t know what to think and it’s tough. I would consider myself successful and I live a happy life for the most part. My whole life I have just been under the impression that I just have social anxiety, so figuring this out is a lot to take in.

Most likely they never thought you're on the spectrum. And when you tell people you're close to, they still might not believe you and it hurts. So just be careful to share only with people you can trust 💯 for support. That's just been my experience. Best wishes that you'll find peace with the diagnosis, and support!

Very cool. I find knitting a simple project to be very calming. I exercise regularly & that really helps. Question: would a Twiddlemuff like what is used for dementia patients work for the sensory exercise?

My special interests are the ones that are making me feel bad these days, they make me realize i can't connect with people through interests, i can't find myself socializing bc i don't have nothing in common with anyone, or if i do, they wouldn't like to talk only about them always. I don't know what to do.
@jinglebell61

You’d be surprised at how many may share your same interests. Maybe make some art using your special interest as the subject. That way you have expanded the narrow interest you have into art which is something that more people have an interest in.

@@jinglebell61 I understand... The thing is there's people who likes my special interests but not in my every day life, agh, idk how to explain haha, but all the small talk is awful for me, it is like "let's talk about something actually fun please" and yeah, that. Thank you for replaying to me :D

Always been shamed for losing myself in my special interests. (Mostly tv series and movies, rewatching them to the point that i know the dialogue by heart) Writing stories,only talking about the series, pretending to be a part of it, but mother thought it wasn't healthy to have an obsession. It been punished and now, once in a while i lay crying in my bed for being an obsessed freak. Coming out of my fantasy world isn't easy when you live with MCDD, Autism. And i just wish that someday my mom will deepen herself in what my diagnose means, instead of shaming me and refusing to believe that her daughter has a mental condition. It sucks if you got a family who is more concerned about appearance than about how you are.

hello dearie - am very glad I've found you, you do good work! Have a ? though - the placement of your ring light next to your face is incredibly annoying, almost painful! to me, is there any way you could, or might change the position? 💕ya. [um, unless it's deliberate, so as to move viewers' point of view away from your face - if so, then I do understand, not wanting to be stared at is a biggie for me too.]

Kinda did it all subconsciously already. I always have my... wrist spring expanders? I don't how do you call these things, they are designed to train your wrists. But quite often I like to just have them in my hands and fidget around. And special interests, oh man. Mine is conlangs (constructed languages). When I tell people I make a language and study a lot of linguistics for that purpose, they ask 'why'. And I don't know why😐
