I stacked 500 to 1000 lights and got huge datails of Laggon, Triffid, Eagle, Omega Nebulae (135-200mm from 1.3 to 2s f/2.8 and iso 1600). First tracked so far, I did Lagoon Nebula (f/5.6 iso 800 and 30s at 200mm) and the results were very simular to untracked.

Another interesting, clearly-explained and well-organized video. Thanks. One suggestion (that I've made before) is to give the 35mm camera EQUIVALENT focal length in addition to the actual FL. I assume you are using an APS-C camera, which has a crop factor of 1.6. If so, your 85mm is equivalent in field of view to 135-136mm and your 200mm equates to 320mm.

I really love this series of 5min Friday, it is such a great starting point on a tons of different subjects. Now I wonder, to pick up this nice red hydrogen, can a long exposure time with a tracking mount (Let's say in a relatively dark sky, out of the city) achieve nearly as good results as an astro-modified camera?

Great video like everytime, Nico :) I have a somewhat noobish question, maybe you can help me. I (finally) got the Laowa 15mm f2 and am pretty hyped to test it out in the night. However, it suffers from coma (which I absolutely hate in Astro shots). Long story short: If I use a Sky Tracker (Like my Barndoor), is it even still important to shoot at a low aperture? My assumption is, that it actually doesn't matter (that much) anymore, since I simply can do a longer tracked shot to compensate for it. I'm only talking about Milkyway Nightscapes. No Deep Sky stuff. Am I wrong?
@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos 3 года назад
It's a tradeoff. You will get better stars and yes you can compensate for loss of light by taking longer exposures, BUT it will take longer overall to get good results in terms of signal to noise ratio. I. E. One hour at f/2 is NOT the same as one hour at f/4. The f/2 results will have a much better signal to noise ratio. So you are basically trading better stars for a noisier photo. They key is to find a good balance. Usually around f/3.2 or f/4 is a nice balance between better stars and still letting in plenty of light.
@mexmax1657
@mexmax1657 3 года назад
@@NebulaPhotos Thanks for the quick response. :) OK. but does it visually make a difference if I let's say take one hour at f2 and two hours on f4? (I mean except the visual differences of the lens itself). Damn, we're buying a possibly fast lens just to stop down again then. This is so bitter... ;)
@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos 3 года назад
F/4 is 2 stops slower than f/2 (f2.8 is in the middle). So 6 hours at f/4 would match the SNR of 2 hours at f/2. I'd also expect 6 hours at f/4 to look better than 2 hours at f/2. The tighter stars will give it a cleaner, more polished appearance.
@mexmax1657
@mexmax1657 3 года назад
@@NebulaPhotos OK. So this sounds that it is not the biggest problem to stop down a little and to take more/longer shots instead. Thanks again for clarification. :)

I have an alt az mount. Would taking short exposures like 1 to 2 secs and stacking them also produce results like those.
@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos 11 месяцев назад
Yes, with an alt az mount you could even probably go up to 10 sec. per exposure and get even better results. The issue you will run into with very long sessions is field rotation once you stack. But it will mostly affect the edge of the photo. If it bothers you, you can always crop to center (assuming the object is centered.

@@NebulaPhotos what gain and exposure time are needed to see lots of nebulosity from the Pleiades?
@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos 11 месяцев назад
@@olivierbufole1291 Not answerable without a lot more info. In general, the key with deep sky astro is not gain/exposure time for a single sub-exposure (light frame), but total integration (total exposure time that goes into the stack). With total integration, the more the better as SNR keeps improving. I did a video on this here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0vd6Zk5M5OA.html

I’m trying to understand how only 2-3 seconds of exposure gave you this much details. When I shot a Milky Way, I usually need 20 seconds with ISO 3200,6400 to see this much (f2 ultrawide lens). Is it because the sky wasn’t as dark? There are some places that I went to that was so dark that I can actually see Milky Way with my bare eyes, is that the condition for these photos?

how do you keep the image so still (without star trailing) if you shoot 400shots @ 2secs each? without a tracker? I missing something here, could you please explain?
@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos Год назад
You should manually re-center every couple minutes, but of course even then each shot will be slightly different due to the earth's rotation. The magic happens when you bring it into a specialized software like Deep Sky Stacker or Siril. These programs can align all the images automatically based on the star patterns as long as the stars are in-focus and reasonably round. So the main reason the final image is sharp (not trailed) is the software aligns all the images perfectly before they are stacked (averaged) together.
