I recently finished up a round of tirzepatide and I have a longer video on my channel documenting the experience. For people who just want some quick takeaways about tirzepatide, this video is for you. That being said, I do own an HRT clinic and we prescribe Tirzepatide in patients that qualify. There is a real potential of losing muscle mass while doing Tirzepatide, and some muscle loss is inevitable. However, I believe if you follow these 4 principles, you can minimize muscle loss while using tirzepatide.
Step 1 - using the minimal effective dose. At my clinic, we believe in using the dose best for YOU. If you can lose weight on a low dose, great. If not, then we just do a little bump until we see slow and sustained weight loss.
Step 2 - optimize your other hormones. If you're testosterone deficient, then you're already putting yourself in a bad position when it comes to maintaining lean mass. Optimize your hormones and that will go a long way to maintaining a positive nitrogen balance, and therefore maintaining lean tissue.
Step 3 - have a high protein diet. Your body needs amino acids to accomplish necessary biological tasks, if it's not provided in the nutrition, your body will take it from your lean tissue. A high protein diet has been shown to effectively minimize muscle loss when in a calorie deficit.
Step 4 - Resistance train. This is probably the most important part of maintaining lean tissue on tirzepatide. Give your muscles a reason to stick around. Keep it simple, keep it progressive, and keep it consistent and that will go a long way to maintaining muscle on tirzepatide.
