As a Hawaiian person, I want to give you some props to how you spoke about Meke Kalikimaka. Any other music reviewer would have gone for the hard virtue signal of trying to equate Zooey and Matt as culture vultures or something to that effect. Instead you gave a nice nod to how Hawaiian music and culture has been gentrified and then you critiqued their version solely based off it's musical merits. I personally can't stand when people try to be warriors for my culture without knowing the first thing about it and the way you talked about it was actually really refreshing. You acknowledged the history of the music being ripped off but you didn't make it your whole schtick. This is how cultural critiques should be handled more often!

One of the only christmas songs I like is What Christmas Means to Me by Stevie Wonder. It has one of my favourite Jamerson basslines. What sucks are all the cover versions. I've heard like ten this year and not once heard the Stevie original. They all screw it up and have this one-note performance throughout. When Stevie sings 'I feel like running wild' the song cranks up a notch and Jamerson funks the hell out of the bass. The cover versions just truck on through like it's just another part of any verse. I don't know how presumably hundreds of musicians and producers can be so out of touch with what they're covering.
