Being an ex-ROSPA/DSA Motorcycle Training Instructor (here in the UK), I used to guide my trainees with FOUR BASIC concepts... YOU, YOUR BIKE, YOUR RIDING and WEATHER... 1 - YOU :- A - When buying a new helmet, IF you buy one that is COMFORTABLY a REAL SNUG FIT, DO NOT WORRY, as over time, IT WILL conform to YOUR head (that's another reason why buying second hand helmets is a NO NO (the main one is, you DON'T know if it's been dropped or been in an accident etc) B - Jackets, trousers (pants for you yanks lol) and boots, take a jumper/cardigan/thick top (for a jacket), or, thick jogging bottoms (for trousers/pants), or, thick socks (for boots) with you when buying gear, as, you want whatever particular garment to fit you COMFORTABLY ENOUGH to be the right size BUT capable for you to wear an extra layer underneath for the colder days. But in ALL cases, TRY to buy the BEST YOU CAN AFFORD (check reviews etc etc) as it could very well help prevent more injuries than necessary. ALSO... Leather is STILL king! (It's a second skin afterall) and if it's backed up by decent padding etc, then IT WILL serve you well... 2 - YOUR BIKE :- 'Look after your bike and it will look after you'... Meaning, DO check your tyre pressures and condition (they are the LAST contact between you/your bike and the tarmac). EVEN THE MOST BASIC maintenance WILL help keep you and your bike riding happily, so, oil/oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, chains & sprockets, control cables, battery, bulbs etc, keep them in good condition/working order, it is, after all, a right pain in the bum being stuck at the side of the road. However, there IS a biker 'bretheren' - 'Code' that you might find helpful as generally, bikers can be helpful when they see someone broken down... And IF you've been helped this way, TRY TO 'Pay it forward'... ** 3 - YOUR RIDING :- 'THERE IS A TIME AND PLACE FOR PACE!' - Hairing around at stupid speeds around built up areas, city/town streets, school zones and such makes you look a d!ck and gives the rest of us an UNWANTED BAD NAME, we already have to battle against car drivers, truck/Bus etc drivers, the Police, and the Government, so, WHY ADD TO IT??? Quiet/clear country lanes? Maybe. Anywhere where there's less traffic? Yeah, maybe. HAVE FUN BUT DON'T GO NUTS! RIDE WITHIN YOUR OWN SKILL LIMITS! REMEMBER.... There's ONLY TWO LITTLE rubber contact patches between you and that painfully hard road surface, or a solid chuck of metal on 4 wheels, or a bone breaking tall tree etc etc etc... 4 - THE WEATHER :- Try, if you can, to ride IN ALL WEATHERS... As ANY 'Time served' biker will tell you (me personally - 35 years in Sunny, Cloudy, Rainy Hail, Snow Sh!t, Snot, the lot) WILL help you get a feel of how you and your bike 'Feels' in these conditions. Riding in adverse weather conditions DOES help you become a better rider overall, it hones your skills and reactions. Vitally, BE FULLY AWARE OF WHAT'S AROUND YOU... Other vehicles (over time you will hone your peripheral vision and visual awareness). The road, black tar strips, drain/man hole covers, wet leaves, frost/ black ice (sadly the latter a scarily hidden danger), camber, uneven road surfaces, and... Sadly more commonly nowadays, the absolutely diabolical way the roads are being maintained (here in the UK Councils/Road maintenace crews just do a CHEAP ASS JOB by dumping a load of sticky gravel down over vast areas of the roads and expect road users with their vehicles to 'Flatten it down' - BLOODY DANGEROUS as stone chips get flung up from car/truck tyres, so both a BIG RISK to motorcyclists and cyclists, AND, makes the riding 'Squirelly' if you come across a freshly dumped, ahem 😒 'Resurfacing job', and the road surface NEVER BLOODY LASTS THOUGH! 🤬🤬). But anyway, those are the basics I used to teach, and, I hoped each time with my trainees, that at least keeping some of that in mind helped them become safer and ultimately, happier riders (and hopefully LONG TERM too!). 👍 ** -Oh and one last thing... LET US PLEEEEAAAASE rid ourselves of this biking SNOBBERY! NO MATTER what you ride, Custom, Cruiser, Harley, BMW, Ducati, Race bike, Crosser, Street bike, Scooter, Vespa, WHATEVER... WE ARE ALL TWO WHEELERS, WE ALL have to battle against as described (other 4, 6 - 18 wheelers, Police and the Governments often oppressive, controlling ways... So, please, wave, nod, acknowledge your fellow biker no matter what they ride, and take the time to at least stop and ask "Are you alright?/Need a hand?" when another 2 wheeler as stuck at the side of the road, after all, you'd want help too if you were stuck wouldn't you? RIDE SAFE, RIDE FREE my fellow biker brothers and sisters!! 👍🙂 🦇😎🦇 🇬🇧

clear shields is only way= wear shades if you need them /i keep glasses in my tool bag- sun rise or set can be pull over and gear up lol

Get a helmet that has a internal built in flick down sun visor great for those days it doesn’t know if it wants to be sunny or cloudy. And if you live anywhere where foggy visor is a remote issue. a pin lock visor is a wonderful thing.

Back around 1987 a life long friend of mine was working at his Dad's gas station. We were in our 20s and had motorcycles. He saw a young man get bumped off his bike by an unaware car lane changed. He was not wearing a helmet and the way he was knocked off the bike he slid down the street on the left side of his face about 25 feet in Arizona high heat summer. So he had to deal with his face scrapping down the road but 120-140 degree asphalt. USE A HELMET AT MINIMUM

I'm looking into getting a bike after a ten year hiatus, but one of the things I made a habit of is looking at the front tires of cars to see what the drivers intention is. It took some practice to learn, but it gave me a heads up and enough time to respond.

Riding the centre of the lane can be unsafe - debris and oil can accumulate in the centre where cars are not keeping the lane clear and clean. The tire patches where cars normally drive is the cleanest part of the road and riding in one of those two patches is safer. The oil accumulation can also really compound the lack of traction when rain first starts.

Not always, I often ride in the centre for better traction, maybe it's just our roads, but the wheel tracks often have tar bleed through them and get super slippery when wet, the centre still has the chip visible and unless it's a very slow piece of road the odd oil drip at 100kmph is not an issue, you're probably right if you're riding in the city where cars stop at lights, there's more oil. Trick is to adjust your riding to whatever road you're on, I take gravel roads wherever I can.

Also dont forget if it just starts raining all the oil and gunk get super slick. If you can pull over for a bit and wait.

I switch between both sides of the lane depending on what the hazards are. If I’m worried about a car passing another car I’ll be on the far side of the lane, in the US that’s the right side of the lane. If I’m concerned about a road or a vehicle merging I’ll get closer to the center of road, in the US that’s the left side. Moving between the sides also helps with visibility too.

@andydragon69 road conditions are constantly changing. Your key here is "Can be unsafe" any part of the road can be unsafe depending on a plethora of things depending on where you're at. Always scan ahead and adjust lines accordingly (:

Keeping both hands on the bars is a pretty good way to lower the risk of being injured on a bike too. (Especially in a built-up area)

On a recent long ride through Vermont, instead of the normal left-handed wave, a passing motorcyclist gave a hand and foot at the same time. Idea formulated. A both hands and both feet wave to the next biker i saw, but time to quickly practice the new enthusiastic wave first. Well, the feet from the pegs caused the suspension to bounce and the engine breaking from removing the hand(s) knocked me even further off balance. Panickingly and unevenly grabbing the bars, then resulted in a bit of a speed wobble i recovered from. The normal wave is smart 😂 but keep at least 2 or 3 points of contact on the controls.

Man alive! It's so difficult to find a proper fitting gear for me as a tall guy. When sleeves are proper length, the rest of the jacket is too loose. But when the jacket fits properly, the sleeves are too short. I then have to find a good size gauntlet gloves to cover the gap, but after you move around for a while it doesn't really work... And the same thing with pants, but thankfully, I recently found good pants in a store online from Sweden (by accident; I randomly Googled motorcycle pants with my size, and it turned up), after I looked in a number of stores across half of my country. Europe, I guess, with its usual limited options... Especially Croatia.

Great video @Lali Thank you. I always appreciate videos like this. The motorcycle is at greater risk of being hit by a left turning car at an intersection when it’s the 2nd vehicle and the first is a car or truck. The reason is that the left turning car waits for the lead vehicle to go by and assumes the gap behind it is big enough to get through before the 3rd vehicle comes along. The trouble is the “gap” is actually a motorcycle. The way to protect ourselves is to ride in the left part of the lane so the oncoming vehicle sees us as a motorcycle and not a gap. Hope this helps someone. I only just learned it recently and have been riding forever. Ride safe brothers and sisters ❤

I started riding in 1971 and still ride. You pretty much covered it all especially about group riding, i don't do it anymore for exactly the reasons you mentioned. The last time was enough for me when riders started to over take in the on coming lane on the brough of a hill , totally blind to oncoming traffic suicidal in my opinion.

Wearing a dark visor, at night ! Information, Position, Speed, Gear, Acceleration. I can recommend Motorcycle Law Scotland, funnily enough for those in Scotland. Why are you trying to keep up with reckless riders? Ride at your own pace, not others. Green means go, IF it is safe to do so.

I work at a dealer/shop. So i've been on a number of group rides. The one thing it has taught me is: I trust maybe 2 people that work there to lead a group ride. One of them being me. You need to be able to lay ground rules before that start, and have to be able to yell at people if they do something unsafe. Possibly tell them to leave. Cause while we're all here to have fun. You know what's not fun? Having to wait for EMS to come cause a guy on a GSXR was pushing the new guys on 300's way too hard. You're job as a leader is to make sure everyone gets home safe.

Beautiful sunset! All your of safety points are completely valid and yet there's so much more to worry about. Best thing we can do is keep developing that sixth sense and awareness. Relax and scan the road ahead, and even behind when stopped at lights. Great tip is to never stop in the middle of cars bumpers so you have room to escape to the side. Better yet filter to the front so you can't get rear ended by the drive not paying attention. Happens more than you think. Keep up the great work Lali 🤙🏻

My pet peeve is riding with no or one hand on the handlebars. This is popular in the video blog community but I worry if there is something in the road or you have to take evasive action, you could be toast. Just be careful out there!

@@TheMike1731 So’s the stealth matt-black ninja wear. Why? I was told that the highest bit of you is the most visible especially in traffic. So a light and coloured helmet for me. What on earth is “cool” about a matt-black helmet? Is it a sign of Isis membership or more drab unsafe puritanical miserable austerity? My theory is the bloggers get them for free. Like the fox that lost it’s tail, no colour, and you’re dressing in an appropriate fashion for your funeral. If it’s only black that you wear and you ride then you’ll see all those road workers In fluorescent helmets and vests, pah! Look what unfashionable idiots and loosers they are, is what the expert blogger thinks as they gesticulate with their hands off the controls. Working on the road all day and they still haven’t got the message yet, wear some stealthy ninja matt-black you dummies! I have to question if the purpose of bloggers wearing this matt-black wear is to blend in with all the cheap black plastic on the bikes? There was another thing i was told, never take your hand off the clutch, i know two strokes aren’t as common but it’s still good practice.

1. Wearing Gear - correct, it's not all about looking cool, or being able to afford high-end gear. It's about your safety and survivability when (not if) you crash. I personally know guys who are now dead, but they rode for decades, one 35 years or more, without an incident until the day they did. That last guy always had a half-helmet and I never saw a pic of him wearing full gear. We'll never know if his choice to not wear proper gear could have saved him. He's dead. Cheaper but quality gear is available - you just have to look through sales bins, and after-season or close-out specials. You may not be all matchy matchy, but you'll get good gear at lower prices. 2. Correct sized gear - this should really just be combined into #1 but the point is valid. Thanks for pointing out the need to have your passenger protected. Very often the passenger gets the owner's extra helmet, no gloves, no jacket, etc. 3. Driving defensively/driving for conditions - I think that's what you're trying to convey. There are many reasons why cars don't see you or drive like they are trying to kill you, Ryan F9's video is the best one yet if you haven't seen it. Driving for conditions means slowing down in heavy traffic, intersections, unfamiliar roads, bad weather, etc. There have millions of videos of perfectly preventable accident showing rides driving too fast (usually) for conditions - most of those involve heavy traffic, but there are plenty of riders on unfamiliar roads going too fast and hitting gravel or wet leaves, etc. 4. Group rides - don't when you're a new rider, that's my advice. This is a very good point. Pair up with a buddy who is at your level, or understands your skill level. I always, always tell whomever I ride with to, "Ride your own ride. Don't try to do what I do if you're the least bit uncomfortable. I will always wait for you, pull off to the side and get back together." Stay away from group rides, period if your new because very few people run rides like you point out with the least experienced in the front. The inexperienced always try and keep up with the show-offs and RU-vid is packed with videos of riders going too fast into corners, shooting wide, target fixating, or high or low-siding. If you must, ride in a group, your advice is very good - hang back and know your limits. Save the showboating and speeding for a track day. 5. Green doesn't mean go - another great point. Motorcyclists love to gun it, looking at that light with intensity and eager to take off. In Europe, where I live, the light often goes from Red, to yellow , then green. Sort of like a ready, set, GO! Take that extra second to ensure there are no late "orange" light runners. This is probably the number one cause of accident I see in Rome. Scooters mostly, taking off immediately and getting clipped by a light runner. These are very practical and simple concepts.

On the comment about boots, i know a few recently who have lost feet, your boots will come off if too loose, and well.... remember sharpening a stick on the concrete?? It will do that to your feet... wear properly fitting footwear, and from my own experience of my leg being ripped open by the peg as soon as it left the leather of my boot... and nearly losing my leg. If you can wear high calf, leathers, or chaps, please do. I love the video btw, just my comment of footwear.

Gear is far better than when I started in 1975, but you guys need to know this: You will still get hurt in full, well fitted and even "fashionable" gear the influencers push. Gear will reduce your injury by 20 to 30mph at best. So a slow speed drop...you'll not be too scraped up. A 60mph slide...injuries may look and fell like a 30 or 40mph slide. Most gear can't stop a crush injury. A hard bump yes (again about 20 mph of it) but crushed leg is still going to be a break. Air vests can stop some crush in the torso collar bone...but a jacket alone will still mean broken bone in a hard impact with a car/rock/tree/guardrail or bike roll over. Your PRIMARY defense against injury is how and when you RIDE. Oh and she's right. A green light means the bulb is working. Proceed only when clear.

I had a low side at 70mph in a bend. I was wearing full alpinestars leathers at the time and only came away with a small cut on my hand. Gear makes more of a difference than what you're making out here.

@@ScarletReflections but you were injured none the less. If your leg was caught under the bike during the slide, it would have been crushed, deformed or had bone breaks. If not in an area that allowed a grassy roll away or flat road shoulder, such as a curve over a cliff or river...the slide would have been only the beginning of the impacts. The gear you failed to use that day was competent riding...as you dropped the bike going 70 in a curve. If this was on a public road and not a track YOU were the missing key piece of the gear....doesn't matter the circumstance you protest to, you laid her down because the bike was going too fast in a curve. "Ride Logically".

It took me over 24 hours to realise I’d broken my knee (and i still couldn’t believe it), and later on it was two weeks before I noticed i’d broken all the toes on my right foot except for the big toe. You should check wriggling toes and fingers before you get up, I didn’t! I’m not brave, it’s just i’d heard of others screaming in pain while breaking their leg and so was seriously convinced it couldn’t be broken because it only hurt when i touched it.

Great subject for a video! I would highly recommend: Helite Turtle II (manual air vest) & actual riding boots I graduated to Gaerne Fastback enduro even though I do 95% street. Also someone I know 'loose strapped' bags to the rear and one got caught in the rear wheel... he tumbled at 80 and lost a foot. He said he likely would have his foot if he wore really STURDY boots. Fastback enduros are very comfortable and break in, just can walk more than an hour in them.

That guy from Alabama (I think)? I took all the experience from his camping videos for my first motorcycle camping trip and it worked great. He said he had AlpineStars for boots but didn't wear them. And the boots he was wearing I would previously have thought were fine, except they weren't because there was no ability to retain the boot onto his foot. He did a lot of things wrong. Not using his full-face helmet, not properly packing his bags, not wearing proper boots, speeding, possible removal of his fender (not sure). But he's an adult and can choose those options.

Another point with the properly fitted gear, get gloves 1 size up from what you think is your size when trying some out in store. You’ll break in the gloves and there will be some tight spots you couldn’t have noticed before

The key with blind corners is to go a speed where you can adjust your position. The ideal line is typically as wide as possible on the entry. Just be aware there may be an obstacle or car there and adjust your speed accordingly.

Hell yeah for looking good in gear! 🤣 I lowsided (vid on my channel) last year in full gear. I still broke my thumb and bruised my sternum and ribs but it could have been worse. I also got a very slight amount of road rash on my arm because I was wearing a mesh jacket. It's too damn hot around here not to! Great point on making sure all gear fits properly, that also helped me when I went down. Either way, I'm a firm believer in ATGATT now and I think I look cool in the gear.

#6: Video blogging while riding your motorcycle. Concentrating more on your social media/video presence and less on your riding is a quick way to get yourself in trouble very quickly as a new or experienced rider. At 60mph you’re covering 88 fps. Very few bikes and even fewer riders can stop a motorcycle in under a 100 feet from 60mph, especially if you’re unexpectedly surprised by something or a new rider.

Yeah, that last one is vital here in the DelMarVa. People are oblivious because they're people (that's just humans) and are constantly running red lights or racing through a yellow. I learned very early on to look left, look right, proceed, and then keep watching as I cross the intersection. Overall, all good tips. I used to wear leather pants, but riding in DC for 15 years in 90+F gets tiring, taxing, and dehydrating. Now I at least makes sure to always wear a leather jacket, boots, gloves, and a full face.

I'll have to do an updated Motovlog setup but it's really almost the same as this video except I have the Hero 11 now, and the original Hero Session on my bike I replaced with the DJI to test it out for a while. @@AntiParallali Cool, thanks for the info. I ripped off your set-up back during a previous video with the Movo Mic. It has worked great. Thank you for that! I had so many issues though with GoPro and the Media Mod, that I'm trying the Ace Pro with their mic adapter. Also playing around with the wireless pairing of the Ace Pro to the Packtalk Edge but that has issues. Can't really pair your phone and the Ace Pro at the same time so not great. But the mic adapter has worked better for me than the GP Media Mod set up where I would constantly lose audio. Safe riding!

Thankfully the EU has mandated lane keeping systems on all existing new cars from July 7th 2024. It’ll take a while to really be noticed on the road, but lane discipline among cars and trucks was eroding away noticeably in recent years. I’ve had to change my line a good number of times already.

I have pretty much the same thoughts as that video. We're going through a heat wave in PA right now and I can't wear thst thing, its so hot! Cuts off so much airflow to the chest and shoulders... that's my main drawback with it.

I stopped at #1 to comment. First saying, at 68+ years old I'm still (legally) drag racing fast motorcycles (0-135+mph in 5.2 and 0-170+mph in 8.1 seconds). YES I 100% recommend that all riders should "fully protect themselves" but I've been street riding in FL for 53+ years (mostly within 10 miles of the Atlantic Ocean) and I have always done the opposite of "dress for the crash" = "I always ride for the way I'm dressed" and (more importantly) I always ride *very defensively* = ride like 3/4 of the people don't see you and the other 1/4 that does see you DON'T CARE. It's ridiculously uncomfortable to ride when fully suited down here in 85 to 95* air (PLUS 80+% humidity) and for me that literally takes ALL of the fun out of riding. So go ahead and cringe and or call me dumb but I've ridden in shorts and t-shirt *thousands of times* (including after midnight during summer months) and even doing that feels uncomfortably MUGGY here in FL. With all that said, I "never ride without a Full Helmet" (nope, not even if/when riding less than two miles to my local dollar store) and helmets HAVE saved my life at least twice. YES I have crashed and lost skin a few times (average is once per decade) but "it was my mistake/fault every time" . And NO I have never crashed while drag racing = it's way safer than daily driving/riding (and as safe as the bike your riding, along with your skill level)...

With the green light, on the daily commute I know the order in which each side gets green, so I know ahead of time when the light will turn green. I look out for red light runners before the light turns green. Then I can go on green. If I simply went on green without looking for red light runners, I would not be here anymore.

great info= but.. 6 months .. only a bicycle helm/2 yr i got full helm+ gloves... tripple diggits here next to florida.. /also gear is extremely expensive if your 4x .. ..i really want a 4x coat and because hot.. i like the shiny stuff with removable pads and liner.... Boots is a no go- -- numb feet- neropauthy.. hot ...imwear loose maccasins or full flip flops.. 30 degree here for 2x wks.. so mostly just shorts.. im slow/cruiser -rider.. 650 s40.. Slow is your friend... dogs/deer and alot = go slow always.. 50 is ok if backroads .. no traffic.. i stop 2x times.. once for a old chuwawuh.. he owned dat rd. /other wa 15 deer.. 1 sec to 3 sec behind each other.. omg.. i cut off bike lol. ..i layed her over once= 5mph in sand=hit the front brake.. nvr again !!!!

while the ads are playing... Dumb ways for me. Riding the first Motorcycle on the Motorway 4 minutes after leaving the dealership. Nope not going to do that... I'd be stupid not to take advantage of the free delivery, and ride it at a time of day and in a place I am comfortable, rather than jumping in the ocean with the Great White sharks! Next, riding down the Motorway to go gear shopping, and not having a Riding Jacket, Pants or boots on, just helmet, gloves & casual clothes. (Did I mention this motorway is dangerous in a car and I am going to need some wet wipes, Toilet paper and a change of pants for when I do decide to ride down the motorway) Trusting other vehicles. sitting behind other vehicles in traffic... I've had cars drive into the back of my car more than once. and I am quite aware that on the bike, the only thing between the front of that car and me... is a plastic top box! and (because it's 5 ways) not slowing down & leaving more space to stop in the wet... I may be under doing it in the dry & being too cautious, but will it stop in the distance I am used to in the dry when it's wet? I don't know, and I'd rather not find out the hard way!

I'm going to add one more dumb way to get hurt riding. Riding at dusk. Visibility is really bad, and deer are out dancing around the roads at that time. As a rule, I i don't ride at dusk. I'll ride in the dark, but not dusk. Hitting a deer would be a real bad time.

I'm very sceptical about the claim of jacket or trousers a bit too big doing any damage. I expected it to go into explaining that your armour might be out of place when falling. This I could accept. But claiming that some material will rub against your skin sounds ludicrous. All the gear has so many adjustments. But they only make jacket to flat less in the wind, it doesn't change amount of space/material under it. There's no way this is a real concern of having a jacket/trousers a bit too big. Most of them are designed to be too big that we could put some layers under. What about integrated but removable 5mm winter layer in jackets and trousers? We take them out in summer, creating a lot of extra space inside. Are you saying that manufacturers are selling unsafe gear to everyone? They do know we are going to remove those layers for the summer. I suggest to reconsider your point number two about clothes.

Most important: keep a safe distance from the traffic in front of you ! If you are A and the car in front is B, when Distance B minus A=zero, you are in serious trouble. Keeping your distance will offer you a reasonable time to react. And what is maybe as important, it also gives the traffic behind you more reaction time...
